Very nice! I think a Wilton combo would make a great kitchen accessory though...

Wilton seems to have been a little inconsistent about that. Most seem to have the date stamped there. Some seem to have other codes (part numbers?) and several owners have indicated that theirs are blank.

No, I think he's referring to the crack below the hole! I noticed it too.

that sound you just heard was me exhaling!!

Not a crack - not even close....just some funky light mixing with the surface rust on the vise.
:rocker:

Now - back to learning more about the vise

Oh! I didn't shift the photo to the right. That I believe isn't going to matter. Whatever the previous user put in those pipe jaws overstressed the casting I bet. Bill, still looking for shims?

Thanks for the nice welcome

I got home late this afternoon & had time for a first coat, using Rust-Oleum Hammertone. It has to cure for 48 hours before recoating.

EDIT: on 11-01-2001

Surface ground the tops of the jaws so they were even & any marks were ground out (photo 2).

Machined & surface ground a thicker thrust washer to replace the thin & worn one on the vise (photos 1 & 5)

Finished pictures, #3 and #4.

I'd like to see more Vise Stands of Garage Journal.

I know a few have been posted in this thread, but I'd like to see some creative ways of mounting a vise off the workbench... Different thread or can we just post them up here?

Yost 33C vise, still US made in Michigan, 5" wide jaws that open 7.5" wide with 6" throat depth. It weighs in at 98 lbs.

Yost makes a wonderful vise. I guess they may have thier own little nitch with the Goverment. Pat Niels, their sales manager and a vey nice guy said that in order to sell vises to the different Government departments. They must document every piece as to place of orgin. Every part must be made here. I think I mentioned it earlier but the number of shop men and machinists working in the Yost factory totals 12!

Unfortunately some government agencies don't follow the rules. You are supposed to buy USA made or "friendly" countries like England, Germany, French, Swiss etcetera. Countries you could not buy from would be China, Vietnam, North Korea. Don't know if Russia is on the "friends" list. When I was a government purchaser it was often difficult to do that, so much Chinese stuff around. The contract purchase are probably much more strict than the credit card purchases I made.

Regarding ebay and vises... who is going to pay to ship a 100 pound vise? I think the cost to ship it (plus crate it) will really knock the final sale price down. People will pay a premium for a nice vise, but I don't think they'll pony up the money on TOP of that to pay for shipping.

I'd try CL for a local sale, or automotive swap meets.

Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. I saw one No. 436 go for $800 and another go for $350. If somebody wants it bad enough, shipping will not deter them.

I saw that 436. Wasn't that seller matchlessantiques? I had a chance at a 436 about 6 months ago but it was missing the collar in front so like a dummy I passed on it . The jaws were nice! This was the one.

I believe he had a big Reed not long ago on a pallet, his reserve was broken at $800!! What does he use on this iron to give it that look. I tried Gun Blue on one of my vises and it turned out like...Well actually it didn't do anything. Maybe its because its cast, I don't know.

I remember that one, too. I bet we watch many of the same auctions. :bounce: To me, it looks like he just sand blasts them real good and immediately takes a picture.

If you scan Ebay, you know what I sell. Say, look at this little beauty. This 104R was nice. I sold it for a friend. He even made a stainless support to fit underneath the bench. Those jaw liners I put on and those forged jaws were in excellent condition too! Look at how nice that handle is. I had freight at only $30 so bidders would not hold back. It sold for $74..That buyer got quite a deal!!

I ship quite a few heavy items sold on eBay, and do it by splitting the shipping cost. First get a quote to the farthest place it can go in the USA - for me, that would be California. Say the freight to ship to Cali is $300, I list a flat rate shipping cost at $150. On lots of items, it's worth it to me to pay half the freight & move the item.

If you do that, be sure to state in the listing that you're paying part of the freight to help the buyer make a purchase. If the buyer lives closer than California, I refund any overpayment on their half of the freight.

Most recent heavy item sold? A 300# rotary phase converter (selling price of $2000). People buy what they feel is a good value, especially if you help with shipping.

Your right Barry, I have a 80 lb. 450S Wilton going to Bakersfield. I charged him Flat Rate $45. I just printed lables and its $65. Sometimes I'm a little short, but I've made the sale with a cushion included in my asking price.
