Well………

What a day.

Been all over in the Oldsmobile

Still enjoying it.

Went to see retired mate Woodsie and his wife Terry to show off the Grizz’s Folly.

Always weirdly satisfying when friends who are brutally honest and loyal give their opinions.

Having a magnificent outfitted T6 VW camper they use all the time and a brand new Audi A1 sport daily as well as an immaculate BMW R1250GS they are not short of a nice car.

Yet, Kevin gets a hard on for the Astro.
Now, with the Olds, both of them, especially Terry, were really taken with its lines, dimensions and the gentle V6 thrum out back.

Trust me, if they hated it, they’d let me have it with both barrels.

After I left their house, I headed to Dunelm, a homeware superstore. I see it as a curtain shop, but there is so much more.

I wanted a new vinyl tablecloth to replace the one George has managed to shred over time. It is number three since he moved in.

I also wanted some nice lace to use for the lace paint job on the Olds’ roof when I get to it.

On my way to Kevins place, I stopped at Pound Stretcher, a cheap shop to look for some stainless steel bowls to create centre caps for the steel wheels fitted to the car

While in there, my phone pinged to inform me a response had come in from a seller I had messaged two days ago about some 18” Dodge wheels and tyres

The wheels and almost new tyres were offered at such a “silly” price, that I knew I would buy them if they were still available

So he sent a couple of pictures of the car they were in…….

Coincidence????????

The car was parked outside the same shop I was in.

A collection time and address were agreed.

Tomorrow morning 9.30 I hope to meet up with Yusif to buy his wheels and tyres.

The trip will hopefully include a stop and meet-up with @pauly at Junction 28 of the M25 to deliver a huge bench vice and some other Bluepoint stuff with his name on, and collecting some Vespa fenders and parts for another future build.

Depending on my overall progress, I may contact @sawduststeve to visit, hopefully have a coffee, and collect a diesel space heater from his workshop that he has kindly donated to my workshop. Weirdly, I tried giving mine away a year ago, not expecting to ever need it again, however, no takers, then put £50.00 price on it and had a bunch of guys wanting it. Weird ehhh.

Then head home in the afternoon

Wheels will need new tapered 12x1.5 nuts to fit to the Oldsmobile. I will also need to get in some spigot rings to reduce the centrebore to 70.3mm from the Dodge Charger size.

I saw some more of these wheels for sale online.

So doing my man mathematics I am going to hazard a guess at the actual cost to be around £220.00 fitted.

Happy??

Me??

Hopefully.

A colleague once painted his Peugeot 504 estate with a brush, came put pretty good
1980, is was 16 and just started work with dad.
He bought a new, to him, works van. An ex British Telecommunications van when they were all bright yellow. Remember Busby ?
We hand painted it green, two coats, one weekend.
With the yellow base coat it turned the brightest neon green ever, seen from outer space we reckoned. Mum refuses to have it on the drive and we gave it two coats the following weekend to tone it down.
Happy days.

Hope to see you tomorrow 👍

So I left home at 07.00 to fill the car up then off to collect the alloys I had agreed to buy.
What a waste of my time, 140 miles, fuel £23.00 , ULEZ charging £12.50, Dartford toll £3.50.
Got there, had to wait 15 minutes for Yusif the seller to get there.
He disappeared down the side of “his mums house”
Comes out 5 minutes later.
No wheels.
“They were stolen “
Maybe they were stolen. Maybe not.

But I am pissed off.

So the Question is of course, whether the wheels will be available to buy in a week or two.

Apparently retaliation is not sportsmanship

So I headed home and stopped along the way to meet up with PaulY, to give him a large vice and those Blue Point socket holders I got out of that tub of rusted tooks a few months ago.

After that I headed into Romford to meet up with @sawduststeve to collect a diesel space heater he had put aside for me. He also gave me about 5kg of 75mm and 100mm wire nails. And finally a beautiful piece of Art that I hope to get to America for a friend.

While I was there, we had a coffee and I got a guided tour of their factory and workshop. After 40 years he is closing down to retire. I felt quite emotional about it all.
Some gorgeous machines, purpose built spaces and tools.

It was a great visit.

I am both happy and sad for Steve. Glad he can retire but sad to see a great business cease to function.

Now the guy with the invisible wheels.....:fingersx:

💯:+1:
This is indeed a mixed bag news! In any case congrats to Steve and hope that he will have as much in retirement as when he was in business. Best of luck Steve.

I think he will miss it.

Going around the workshop with him yesterday he was still 100% passionate about it.
Knowledgeable
I pointed out multiple items, machines and tools including obsolete tools and items, and every one was explained in detail, touched, demonstrated lovingly and with a familiarity born of years of use.

Sound over exaggerated??

Absolutely not.

The guy is pretty unique in this day and age.

I am hoping that he and his family will have an awesome retirement. The kind of thing that he can look at and say “I should have done this years ago “

We have flaky sellers like that here. Better offer? Thinks he can get a higher price so relisting later? To a bunch of people now, their word means nothing. Of course they could have been stolen but how often would wheels like that come up for sale where you're at?

Somewhere between rarely and never.

He mentioned that he had them advertised for a long time.

Ultimately, I wish him good Karma, commensurate with the deal not going anywhere.

Karma is a magnificent mistress.

She will kick or kiss your ***.

I will investigate in two weeks to see if they are still available for sale.

@Grizz1963 is it not at this point that karma usually kicks in and we find ourselves in a better position. ie Different wheels with new tires at a good price? Sometime as you well know and have experienced, things work out a whole lot better and we look back and laugh.

1000%

And already verbalised it yesterday to @CraigRK.

I believe in “saved by the bell” type karma.

So………

The search will continue.

Still discovering little things about the car.

Addressing others I find

Buying gifts for it.

Thinking

.

Bought the car a gift too.

Looks kitch as a third world minibus taxi steering wheel

E-Brake/handbrake cable snapped before I bought it note the cool solution contrasted against my flip flops. Need to obviously find a replacement or repair it

Got the trunk stripped out including underfelt.

Scrubbed the trunk carpet with some Ammonia based gel.

A comment on my YouTube channel Riangrizz that really does resonate with me.

Look, it’s a 35 year old car.

Wear and tear and specific manufacturer quality or LACK OF QUALITY is certainly to be blamed in part for failure of parts.
But…… when something fails, and the owner skips on repairs and a chain of events manage to destroy more parts along the way, that were as a direct result of initial lack of fucks being given…… the quote below stands firmly.

I do get a kick out of finding any failure to care and fixing it.

My feeling is that this car had a way above average life to date, which has resulted in it essentially being a good car that would benefit from some mechanical TLC and certainly cosmetic modifications and attention.

Long may she ride.

@Grizz1963 I attend auctions and often there is a car much like the one you are now enjoying. Usually sell cheap as they are 4 door grandpa/grandma cars, not Jeeps or WRX's. Family member needed a car. Told him several times, dependable low mileage reliable cheap...Replied didn't want a rector or old foggey car.
Those things survive for years!

New steering wheel cover is stylish I like that!

Thank you.

Agreed on whole style and social perception thing.

Over here, I would still stick my neck out and say the majority of small, medium BMW drivers, male and mostly female, are cnuts who would not have a clue how to react if s 3 year old ran into the street, but they insist on racing through my 30mph zone as 50mph and a lot more. Second bunch of hateful dumbasses are all the commercial vehicle drivers (except for a few) who insist on passing through at speeds way in excess of a SAFE, manageable speed in tipper trucks, loaded 7.5 tonners etc.

Anyway, back to your original point about ego vs sense.

Multiple factors to blame. Least of which is not social media.

I could easily replace my three cars with a single 5 year old BMW with an added finance or service risk profile. Though I have never ever bought any motor vehicle on any form of finance or lease contract.

I am about to go to town in the Oldsmobile and it’s really hard to choose between it and the Renault Scenic.

I am actually going to make a short commentary video about the
First 350 miles of ownership.

What modern car would inspire me to do that??

Not many/any.

Went shopping today.

Bought some cheap stuff for the Oldsmobile.

Two floor mats. Light beige.
Cabin spray. Bubblegum flavoured.
4 mixing bowls….. police cruiser look Three laser cut letters….. lace painting.

So, the bowls cut down to create a police cruiser look, painted silver.

Remember the lace roof and lowrider influences ?

I bought these three letters today.

Tell me what they are going to be for?

Cleaning up part whatever.

Amazing how these unloved cars are allowed to degenerate over time.
It’s never one person’s fault or responsibility.
And ultimately, “Your car, Your thing”
I just like to clean them up and add visual appeal and improvements to functionality.
As I keep going around this car, I do realise just how very good it still is for a 34 year old car.
Today was inside and outside glass, door and window rubbers, trunk stripped out and wet wiped out with Elbow Grease (an English cleaning product)
Also cleaned the four steel wheels and tyres/tires with a pot scourer brush and then washed them off with water.

Bit by bit I think it will get better.

Of course driving on the grimy winter roads will set me back every time.

Now you have to clean those inner fender wells. Can't have those nice clean wheels with dirty inner fender wells. No need to thank me. I can think of things for other people to do without breaking a sweat. The car is looking good!

I will be getting there.

Especially if I lower it and add wheels.

I have never liked being a sheep.

Seeing how much you care about poor old and neglected cars , I couldn’t help but to plagiarize these words:)

“Give me your tired, your poor cars..Your huddled car masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost cars to me, I lift my lamp beside my garage door!"

Good on you!

Nice toy which fits you Ryan!
But, how is the pick-up project doing? Or is it on short leave due to the weather?

So my attempted purchase of those 18” Dodge Charger wheels failed dismally.

So until I can find something that I actually like and want, I decided to look in my kitchen.

Pretty much unused for the last 10 years, tucked up high in a cupboard, there were two stainless steel balti bowls.

I had measured the wheel rim with some callipers and found that I needed 150mm.
Coincidence?? Balti dishes are 150mm diameter

A quick trip to the garage, Mr Grinder woken up, handles rough cut and removed.

Back to the car, trial fit…… Perfect.

I have ordered 20 “chrome” wheel nut covers from Evilbay, will grind them down to almost just the hex caps and glue on with clear Sikaflex.

The actual bowls will get black Sikaflex.

Just a simple, cheap and temporary solution.

That is a pretty cool idea, I hope you are able to get them to stay on easy enough.

Ohh Ye’ of little faith.

Sikaflex is more than capable 😉

You know me well enough that this should not come as a surprise 😉

When you start with a £1500.00 car that will probably never be worth more than £3000.00 on a good day, and also for some of my modifications being temporary solutions to long term issues (like spending £80.00 on two new tyres, which could be obsolete in under 100, 200 or 300 miles) but are of critical importance to safe use of the car.

The wheel nuts and wheel bearing nut are actually quite unsightly.

Cost of 4 balti bowls £5.99 delivered.
Fake nuts £3.19 delivered.
Sikaflex, left over from many jobs £0

Rian, sorry for being AWOL from your thread. Not sorry for stopping by today to wish you a...
Happy Birthday Rian!
I also wanted to give you a belated congratulations on your Oldsmobile. Our 1953 Olds 98 was the family's first V8 powered car and it pulled our travel trailer like it wasn't even attached. As the owner of your own 1992 Olds 88 you have every right to mount the car. I didn't dare do that to my father's car but I did love it from afar.

Thank you all.

Very subdued day. I have felt dang rough this week. Thanks Pedro.

Went to a late lunch with Kevin and Terry yesterday. A new Turkish place in Rochester. Highly recommend.

Today I took the Oldsmobile to Darren’s place to try the 18” wheels off his 300C

I am pleased to say……..

Much thoughts thought during my birthday day.

Some things change, some don’t.

Some should, some won’t.

You go figure.
