Hi All. Finishing basement and plan to have open ceiling (painted black).

Adding the walls on the exterior: below wall will run parallel to floor joists and miss the joist so I need to determine how to attach at “ceiling”. It’s 8” off the rim joint or so.

I’m tempted to nail a 2x4 to rim joist and then strap into that 2x4.

What would you guys do?IMG_0545.jpeg

Blocking between joists.

But I'm confused what you're calling a rim joists in that picture.

Are you trying to frame a wall parallel to the concrete wall, that is also parralel to your joists? How far off the concrete are you framing this?

Wall will run between concrete wall and floor joist. 1/2” off insulation board. Basically centered between floor joist and rim joist.

How are you attaching wall to the structure?

If you don't need a full tie in, add an offset plate at the top, above ceiling height, to catch your drywall. You could also tie this to the floor joist if needed.

Floor ... ramset
Ceiling / top of wall ... that’s what I was asking. I think @JohnX14 suggestion is the plan.

Needs to be pulled 1/2”away from joist (so isn’t touching insulation board)

Looks like you have a small framed wall on top of the concrete. To avoid messing with the insulation is consider tying into that.

Excuse the bad drawing, fat fingers and tiny screen:

Use a 2x6 for a second top plate and it gives you a lip level to the bottom of the joist to catch your ceiling.
