You guys have a sophisticated tool palette, but you sure don't know anything about good coffee. I've never understood when someone is discerning about one thing and completely the opposite on other things. Perplexing...

Brazilian Santos whole bean roasted locally in Little Rock, AR ...ground Turkish fine and tamped at 40 lbs approx to make incredible espresso for my morning shop cappuccino from my Pasquini italian made machine.

I'll argue, along with many others, that the french press (press pot) will make the best cup of coffee you can have.

I love coffee. La Minita from Second Cup, fresh ground before a brew... oh man!

Coffee, OTOH, hates me. :( Dragon fire! :flamethro

I drink tea now, which is actually pretty handy since I can boil a kettle on the woodstove in the stop and make a cup pretty much anytime.

Ive been grinding various bold coffee beans and using a French Press for about 3 years, but last week I switched back to a drip maker, because I think strong coffee overload has been adversly affecting my physiology. I did 20 in the navy and drank my share of rot gut stuff!

Like a few others have said, "Peets" (Major Dickerson) rules in my garage and in the house as well. I like it strong so I usually add a extra few scoops to the mix as well. I used to have my brother ship the beans from Boston to NY before I could buy it locally....great stuff!!

Normally one cup a day; Folgers, straight up.

Winters in the garage I might do another cup in the evening, ..... depending on the weather and how the day went.

And if it's really cold, maybe add some Bailey's.

I hated coffee and never drank it until my wife bought a Kerig one cup machine. Now I have a cup of morning blend every morning with breakfast. This is the only machine I ever found that makes coffee that tastes as good as it smells.

I don't drink coffee for the taste. I drink it for the health benefits.

One cup a day is all that was recommended by my doc.

I just drink Maxwell House outta a cheap drip machine. I'm not a fancy guy and don't drink fancy coffee. Nothing against it though if that's what you like.

I start out the day with 2-3 double shot espresso's with milk foam courtesy of Ms Silvia. If I am feeling wore out and I happen to go home for lunch, I'll grab another double shot.

I agree with the everyone praising the french press, it's probably the best best method to brew non-espresso coffee.

My Mom has a Keurig and it works well, but the coffee is expensive.

As for coffee, I like that special stuff that those little mammals eat, then **** out. I think it's $100 per pound. Yummers!

In Australia, we have a very strong coffee culture and especially in Melbourne we would have more coffee shops than wine bars (10 to 1). You cannot buy a filter coffee from any shops here, your choice would be an espresso, latte or cappucino! Starbucks has pulled out of Australia because their coffee was too bad! At home and at work we have these machines for the perfect short black to get you through the day:bounce:

Really? What was his reasoning? I think they have some good antioxidants, but theres plenty of other/better ways to get them over coffee.

This isnt a reponse to anyone's post here just me throwing down some thoughts.

I have my own opinion about coffee drinkers here in the states. When I think of America and coffee (America including Canada and Mexico) I think of cowboys making coffee over a fire back in the day. Do you think they had the elaborate expresso or cappucino machines that the europeans had? No way. We weren't that refined. We just wanted some coffee to help us work in the morning. We didn't need a skinny short cafe latte extra hot extra milk.

So its obvious from posts here Americans are stuck in our roots. We aren't a LAvazza or an expresso maniac society over here. If you really drank coffee the way italians or french do you would have ONE cup of expresso a day maybe with a sugar cube per shot. I've spent a lot of time in Torino and a normal italian doesn't drink coffee like we do. We would all be dead if we drank italian americanos the way americans do. Its also considered along the lines of a treat over there. So when people put down the way Americans drink coffee I just crack a smile and say, "I like what I like."

So in the end my opinion is the same if you are a strong european coffee or an american home coffee maker kind of guy, if you love either one and have a preference I will call you a coffee connoisseur. Same way you can be a connoisseur of wine less than 20 bucks. Hell you can be a connoisseur of wine under 10 lol. There is just as much variety in everything.

Of all of north American coffee, Mexican traditional coffee is my favorite. Flavorful and smooth with a hint of cinnamon. I should've married a Mexican girl . . . j/k in case the wife reads this.

Now tea is a different story...

Folgers 100% Columbian when a budget. Just tried the Brazilian I think it was, good as well.

When not on a budget we buy the local-fair trade-brand for $10+ a pound. One good thing about living amongst all the liberal hippie-types here in MA is they brew some good coffee.

I recommend trying an air-roasted coffee if you ever get the chance, very good.

Folgers. I'm maybe 6-8 cups a day or so and her too. No pot allowed in the shop - if I fixed some for me and not for her, oooo - bad news.

Home roast, baby. I'm surprised all you do-it-yourserlfers buy factory-roasted coffee.

Look at it this way. A coffee roaster is a new toy to play with! And it's one you can go nuts on, including PID loops, gas fired, etc.

Tom;

I'm happy to walk you through it if you want to try. Otherwise, SweetMarias is a great reference. When you decide to plunk down on toys, try CoffeeGeek.

I go with whatever dark roast fancy pants coffee is on sale at Target (usually Archer Farms...which is really good coffee and doesn't taste like the burned dehydrated battery acid offered by Starbucks). I can't drink weak flavoured coffee these days...I enjoy the taste of a bold brew in the morning.

As far as the brewing method we use a french press. It first started b/c we lived in a small townhome and didn't want a large coffee maker taking up limited counter space. Now it has turned into a preference coffee-snob thing. I can't drink it any other way now. Plus I am a one cup a day guy anyways so the press is perfect for me/us.

I'm sure people disagree with me but the best coffee is the kind made from fresh ingredients. I have a glass pot and filtered or distilled water, heated and run through a French press or even one of the old all-glass percolators.

If the coffee is made fresh and not burnt, then the acid doesn't take the place of the taste of the coffee.

I also like espresso coffee, especially French roast, where the coffee has been allowed to grow fully ripe, then slowly roasted. I have a friend at work who roasts his own coffee and it tastes good. Strong, but full of flavor.

I drink coffee for the taste, not the caffeine. most of what I drink now is decaf, so the c9offee and the caffeine don't wake me up in the morning. A good night's sleep is better than that.

last xmas my wife and i got a cuisinart coffee pot. the type mentioned above that grinds before each pot (truly a bear to clean), and we have completely changed our coffee drinking.

My in-laws got me one of those a couple of years ago. It IS a bear to clean. Has to be clean and dry before the next pot, a tough ritual in the morning before I've had my coffee. The grinder finally died, and I couldn't get rid of it fast enough.

Coffee needs to be brewed into a thermal pot, so there is no warmer to scorch the coffee after a couple of hours. My wife doesn't drink coffee, so I'm the only user.

I like 8 O'Clock Colombian (regular 8 O'clock isn't as good), but I'm on an tight budget, so it's whatever is on sale. Lately it's been Java Time, $3 for 2 lbs at Ocean State Job Lot. Not bad, actually.

You're more likely to find this in a European home than any fancy espresso maker:

RESIZEDmokapot.jpg

We have one of those and always keep a brick of pre-ground espresso in the fridge. Only takes a few minutes to have a great shot of espresso with dessert.

I find it funny that the cheapest and simplest ways to brew coffee/espresso (french press or stovetop espresso maker) make the best end product. This is another example of technology not necessarily making something better.

French press coffee is the way to go..
My wife got me a French Press years ago; don't use it nearly as often as I should. I'm not a coffee snob, but I love really strong coffee. When I'm at the local diner, I ask them not to dump the dregs from the pots that are low - I'll drink it.

Been using the Keurig system. <SNIP> A little pricey per cup.
We had been looking at them, and then found a Keurig Mini brewer at a local thrift shop for $25. Ordered 480 K-cups off eBay for $149, and we've loved it. I've drunk more coffee in the last 2 months than the 12 months before.

When it comes down to it, I'll drink cheap instant - I'm just a recovering caffeine junky. Although soda is more my weakness - it used to be nothing for me to down a 2 liter in a night. I lost 15 lb.s when I switched from regular to diet soda.

Been using the Keurig system. Cup at a time. Fresh everytime. Never go back to drip again. A little pricey per cup but it's not like I'm drinking ten a day. Great for a garage...

Having one right now. I'll agree on the cost, but fresh every time. My current fav. is one of the flavored ones. Don't forget you can use the gray adapter to use regular ground coffee to save some $.

Trader Joes Ultra Dark French roast for me. Only ground right before brewing. I use a french press about 90% of the time, but when I have a hankering for Espresso, the Bialeto does the trick. I do have a sweet tooth, so I always add agave nectar and lighten with a touch of soy milk.
Turkish/Armenian/Middle Eastern (depending on your national loyalties) coffee is always a treat.

Trader Joes Sumatra, Ethiopian, French roast, coffees of that ilk, Seattle’s best, although owned by Starbucks, I still drink it but feel dirty afterwards. Grind beans and it goes into a Cuisinart with a fancy gold filter with spring water. I like it almost like Turkish coffee or mud as my buds say. Pretty snobby about my coffee and wine. I have an espresso machine as well but it is just taking up shelf space. Five hour energy drinks are my best friend

Obsess? Obsess and discern aren't related words in my understanding. Discerning means to recognize/perceive the difference...in this case of topic quality flavor vs. nothing more than caffeine jolt that makes my two year old spit, but he says yum to good quality espresso.

BTW, It takes just as long to buy cheap coffee as good and it takes less time to make my cappuccino than a drip or french press cup of java.
