This was my find of the month. I live in a big military town so sometimes I get cool tool scores when service people move. This was marketplace posted as what initially seems like a sorta overpriced $65 junk tool lot inside a destroyed metal tool box. But I saw an Armstrong maxx ratchet handle, and decided to go for it. Boy am I glad I did. Inside one I pulled out the China junk on top, is the vast majority of an Armstrong GMTK Military Tool kit. Right before private equity took out USA tool making, APEX was able to put together an entire kit for military use where almost all the tools were USA made. There is a SnapOn version that goes for about a billion dollars but the Armstrong one I’ve always really wanted. It reminds me of the final Sears USA made tools I grew up as a kid buying from 2010-2017 era. In my book this kit is a “what if” apex/craftsman/sears USA tool ultimate kit.

Obviously the pelican case isn’t there, maybe one day I can find one empty cheap, but getting this haul for $65 is pretty exciting to me. These came with some slick pieces like the locking extensions, fine tooth ratchets, USA made ratcheting and long pattern wrenches, etc.

That certainly is a **** worthy score.

How does ownership of a tool set like that pass from DoD or GSA or ?? to private ownership? Or does it?

In my experience there are a few different ways - The tools are liquidated on an auction site like GovDeals, they are acquired with sticky fingers, or I have even seen full sets of tools thrown away in dumpsters on the bases.

When I was working for the government, I finally bought new tools for the crews. They were mostly using very old tool sets. Some were well worn while others were OK. The previous supervisor was too conscious of saving every penny with no thought of the time lost working with poor tools. I asked what to do with the old tools that the crews did not want to keep. Upper management said to just throw them away in the scrap bin that would got out on a surplus bid. Which is what I did. Whoever ended up getting the high bid on the scrap got all of the tools.

Working for the USFS back in the '70s-'80s, we had a "use it or lose it" budget system. At the end of the season, we'd get rid of any fire hand tools showing wear--like missing the varnish on the handles--and order new to use up any surplus in the annual budget. Then we'd get to scraping the varnish off all the tool handles and finishing them with BLO....

And I suppose in all of their wisdom, that workers would get fired if they were caught taking anything out of the surplus bin. 😖

It's still government property until sold. It was in a locked enclosure. However, if you needed something out of there (like a small piece of metal, etc.) the property control person had the keys and we used things out of there as needed to perform the work.

Catching up from late last week...
125 Sterilite Storage Bins with lids, including 20 dvd boxes for 45 bucks
Wow. You ****!
Hit an estate sale this morning. Not too much in the way of tools. On the second pass around I found the box with the base in it. Started immediately looking harder for the other piece. I found the 303 vise not far away. Both unused with all the paperwork in the boxes. $10 for both not too bad!
Dang, I saw this in I think the vises thread. Congrats. You ****!
he says he will sell everything on the shelf every single wrench for drum roll - $7!
icon_eek.gif
I'd'a been on that like a fat kid on chocolate cake. You ****!
He said, The rest of the bins that didn't sell are out on the driveway
Go get them before the Vultures do!
NICE! ***** to be you.
Combination of two lots $10 each.
You ****!
And BTW I'll be in Dallas TX rest of the week, lock up your tools. After that South Carolina bound for a few weeks, keep your tools locked there as well. I could be in trouble in SC as I'll have my truck ,and access to a rental cab over box truck.HeeHee
Good hunting!

I'd be pretty darn excited for that kit at that price, too! You ****!

No logo. M Klein & Sons in the handle. Hard to make out the date. 4-, then looks like a smaller sideways 0. Have to wonder if it’s an 8 or another digit.

7-3/8” long.

Coach *****!

A rare Thursday post for me:

A Freecycle PU for a near new 10x10 pop-up canopy cover - passed on the beat up frame as I have one that needs a new cover. No pics as its just a pile of blue rain fly material.

Then on the way home a sort of estate sale stop. $3 for some BMW/Heyco kit tools, a long C Craftsman sheet metal hammer, a tire patch stitcher tool, and a Swanson Speed square. I hesitated on the square, but it's orange and would be a good one for a travel tool kit (less likely to miss it and I "lose" these in my on garage routinely...)

Sweet deals guys!

Last night I knew I’d misplaced two Thorsen sockets from the set. Hard to forget a 1-3/16” and the updated later mfd. 13/16” that had been present. I was telling my wife I’d lost them and she thought I was crazy. Turns out they were in my work van behind the seat, they’d rolled out the bag!

I decided to go back to Habitat anyway and have another look since I was passing through. Picked up a few more big sockets. None Better, Dayton, and Proto. A couple pieces I didn’t see yesterday, an old Armstrong square open end wrench, and an interesting pair of pliers missing a spring.

The logo took me down a rabbit, or should I say owl hole here in Florida, where I was able to find out exactly what they are. Dreusicke (likely W. Germany) peening pliers for typewriter repair. Interesting logo with three owls.

Anyway, it was a worthwhile pit stop as I had a 95 minute drive from there to my next delivery.

Only one sale to go to today. There were quite a few tools at the sale but prices were high so I only picked up items that weren’t priced that were of interest to me. The homemade drill index looked like somebody’s first wood shop project and it wouldn’t have gotten an “A”. It still had a certain appeal to me. IMG_6999.jpeg
The full can of WD40 was in the free pile due to the missing spout. The 3/8” drive ratchet was made by S-K for Pennys. IMG_7033.jpegIMG_7034.jpeg
My favorite find was probably the small Pexto monkey wrench with ORD engraved on one side likely meaning it was used in a military toolset. IMG_7022.jpegIMG_7023.jpegIMG_7026.jpeg
The GMTK correct wartime D-I 1033C DOE wrench was cool. IMG_7031.jpegIMG_7032.jpeg
The Channellock dykes with the handle pattern are in the evaporust. IMG_0044.pngIMG_7006.jpeg

Fancy pants, you want fancy pants, dig the pencil sharpener I got from last week.

Damnit! Now I need one of those, too!

What used to really get my goat on the jobsite was guys who'd show up with fancy pencil sharpeners for their carpenter pencils. They obviously didn't understand the point behind a flat-point pencil.

To answer the question on the military tool disposition, my wife’s family has a few folks who served recently and I asked them this very question years ago when I started buying this stuff. Is it legal to own, did they steal it, etc they laughed. Apparently it’s incredibly common when a company or group (forgive me not knowing the nomenclature) is broken up, everything like this is essentially just up for grabs or tossed. Whole tool boxes even. And it happens frequently. Since folks move around a lot in the service the boxes are often tossed to save weight and eventually the tools if not needed are sold cheap as there is a weight limit for military moves. Apparently it happens a good amount such that there is a ton of surplus in the garages of off and on base housing.

…which takes us to today’s $25 score. I’m not sure if this was once a set or just some sort of assortment, but again scored from a military housing development was this very cool set of Wright USA sockets. The craziest part is everything looks like it’s brand new. No wear to the drive ends whatsoever. Really complete sets of Metric and SAE, 1/4 3/8 and 1/2 drives, shallow and deep. Around 120 Wright sockets total. Also thrown in 2 sets of unused proto hex keys, and a really nice vintage USA Xcelite driver set in hard shell case. I believe this is from the Cooper Tools era but someone might know more than me.

Everything lined up on the top tray

Not much going on around here, and surprising as yesterday and today were beautiful days; Opened the house early and loving the fresh air!

Hit another HS Flea - it snot my fave but found some smalls:

Hex sockets are Indestro in 1/8" and 1/4" for a buck each. The small brass candelabra was $5 (I have a bunch of candles this size); and I've been on the lookout for the small 40W appliance bulbs or equivalent for as mall work lamp I commonly use for curing paint on small projects. A buck each for the bulbs.

Went to a reseller going out of business sale. Nothing was priced gathered a small pile to judge the pricing. Continued the pile $75 out the door. Not sure on the big boxes original brand been repainted but the Snapon sticker on the inside was interesting.
