Fireball claims their vise is made to be used as a press, and it does a fine job of it. But we all know that there are more cheap vises in garages than Fireballs.
It's almost like the vise isn't the problem in this equationNot sure which is the bigger mistake. Cheater on the vise handle or flaring tool for crimping.
I have both and use both to, well, press things. I always try to position items in the middle of the vise if I'm using it as a press.I wondered if the uneven loading had a part in the vise breaking. I know lots of people use the vise as a press brake.
But no cheater bars on any of my vises... ever.
So always?I only use the vise as a press when I need to press something together that fits in the vise
Nah. We have a forklift.I don't use cheater bars either. A hammer is much faster.
That is supposed to be the "shear bolt" per say to idiot proof it. The handle should bend before anything else is damaged.Based on how many bent handles I see on bench vises everywhere, seems cheater bars are just common practice among Americans, at least
Or you could have gotten this....hmm, cheater bar, flaring tool, not centering the work in the jaws, putting the flaring tool in such a way as to create uneven tension (I woulda put it centered HORIZONTAL) in the jaws..
yep, broke vise.
I mean, really? Don't people know the proper way to tighten a vise is to whack the hell out of the handle with a BFH? If a BFH isn't handy, a large Crescent wrench will do.Based on how many bent handles I see on bench vises everywhere, seems cheater bars are just common practice among Americans, at least
No. Not everything needing pressing fits in the vise. That's where the BFH comes in.So always?
