I picked up a Kobalt 3/8 set for 10 dollars. They didn't hassle me. They are all 12 point both metric and fractional. One deep 5/8 spark plug socket. Nice case. The ratchet is not so great, but after I put some motorcraft grease inside it works pretty well. It was dry as a bone. All US made but a far cry to the Kobalt that Williams made back in the late 90's.

The sockets are not as nice as recent Craftsman I have purchased and like I said the ratchet would best be described as "rough." It is a 36 tooth ratchet so it likes the grease I put in. I would say that 36 dollars is a fair price for what it is, and 10 is very good. I would use this to keep in the car.

A big thanks to the Scoutguy.

edit: one weird thing about this Kobalt product is that you have to push the button on the ratchet to BOTH insert and release the socket. I have never seen that before and it was somewhat disconcerting.

Oh, 9-19 mm and the 19 was hairline cracked. It has to be exchanged.

I went ahead and ordered online with in store pickup. I really had to twist their arm but they did sell me two 3/8" sets for the 1/4" price. The quality is better on the 3/8" set but definitely below Craftsman imo. For $10 not bad but I would much rather have Craftsman or Duralast/Taiwan equivalent.

The best part about this set is the case. It is really nice. And the ratchet really needs some grease. Makes a world of difference. 30 seconds to put the grease in.

No trouble here.

Just picked up that Kobalt socket set at Lowes. Ordered it on-line and printed off a copy of the confirmation page and a copy of the item page. Sure enough, they had the 1/4" set there waiting for me. I looked at it and told them that this was the wrong set. She looked over the paperwork and was dumbfounded. Pulled it up in the computer and she was at a complete loss. Talked to her boss and was given the OK to issue a refund then give me the 3/8" set for the same price. I looked and found the set was regular priced for $35. She said it was my lucky day to which I just smiled and replied "I guess so!"

Anyway, here are some pictures of the kit. I was actually quite surprised that it has every socket that you'll ever need to work on most vehicles (at least imports). It's not very often that you find a 17mm & 19mm in these small kits. This one will be going into one of my vehicles and will be picking another one up tomorrow to go in my other car.

They wouldn't do the 3/8 drive set for me. He did offer it for 25% off...I declined. There is another Lowes a comparable distance away. I might try that store and see if there manager has a different take on it. Though they claimed they were going to get the website fixed. They would have done the 3/8 drive if there was a 20 pcs set but he would not do it for the 24.

I would have written the store managers name down and called customer service about the bait and switch between online and store.

Well If I would have ordered it without knowing that it was wrong I probably would have been more stubborn. The girls helping me were nice about it and the mananger would not even come over to deal with it himself....plus there is that other store to try:) And if all else fails...I will send the wife in...I know what the outcome of that would be!

I picked up mine tonight.
They definately did NOT want to give me the 3/8" set.
I talked to 2 or 3 different managers, and as I was leaving the store manager got on the phone with a higher up.
It took them looking at the on line advertisement to believe me.

I went and did the Lowes 3/8 set deal. Kinda funny. I order online, go down to the local store and I see 3 workers in the customer service booth huddled around a computer with what I could vaguely see as sockets in an "s" pattern.
I approach anyway cause hell I already drove down there right? I hand the guy the order paper and he hands me a 1/4 set and asks if everything is right. Nope this is a 1/4 set. He turns around and tells his co-workers we got another one or something. I figure I'll just get a refund but the manager tells him to give me the 3/8 set. No problem. He said I was the second one that night. lol

Not quite you have to set and hit refresh and wait for them to post a coupon deal on a specific item...and then you have to be one of the 25 to 150 first people to follow the link and give them your email...and then it will show up in your email 4 to 48 hours later if you are one of the first ones. They do seem to be sending out 20% off consolation coupons to some people. You have 48 hours to use the coupon. The last item tonight was a 50 gallon water heater. Tommorow is supposed to be the last day.

Just reporting what their staff reported. Apparently a $180 Kitchen Aide mixer for $18 was one of the deals.

The connection is that the item number, 266590, corresponds to a 20 piece 1/4" set.

There is no 20 piece 3/8" set. The description for the product is wrong. The photo is right and shows the 1/4" set.

Lowes is not aware of the discrepancy, so when people show up asking for the '3/8" set' they ordered, Lowes staff can sometimes be convinced to sell the 3/8" sets at the 1/4" set price.

The thing is, Lowes has dozens of the 1/4" sets on display in the holiday tool gifts section, and only 2-4 3/8" sets in the mechanics tool section.

A note from corporate or sellout of 3/8" sets will lead to people wasting time. Then again, this same thing happened a few months ago, but the error was never corrected.

Yes, they are aware. This came up a few months ago. I emailed them a couple of times about it, and got a response that they'd look into it. They have never changed the description, even now when putting them on sale again. They just don't seem to give a ****.

I got the last two sets my store had. I wish they would throw the 40 pc 3/8 deeep and shallow sets back up for 19 dollars. I cleaned up on that sale 13 sets in all. It was a real sale and not a typo. Had a really nice ratchet in the mix as well. I don't like the ratchet in these 24pc sets

This was the ones for 19.97

Well, someone knows about the error, but not the appropriate departments.

This happens at Sears all the time - their webteam and their sales/marketing team evidently never communicate with each other. They'll advertise an "all Gearwrench on sale" promo, and only some Gearwrench tools will be on sale. "All storage and organization accessories on sale" means "some on sale." More recently, there were banner ads and text mentions of a 10-15% off sale, and the sale never went live.

These larger retailers have such complex inner workings that one hand doesn't ever know what the second hand is doing. In this case, the people able to change the product description either don't know to do so, or haven't been told to do so.

Got my Kobalt 3/8" socket set this morning. The manager had no problems making the switch. This will make a good stocking stuffer.

I got the 3/8" set for the $9.98 price.

The sockets look OK but that 3/8" ratchet really looks like poor quality. The selector looks like something you'd see on a cheap toy.

I'm not complaining given the price, but I thought Kobalt would have been better quality.

They are basically a Craftsman raised panel ratchet with just a handle that is cast differently. I took the guts out of my Craftsman and put them in my Kobalt just for the heck of it.

I went with my father to lowes last night and we both picked up a 3/8" 24 piece set for the $9.98 price and I got one of those Kobalt palm ratchets for $5 as well. At first the girls and the counter did not want to give them to me as they really didn't know there was a difference in drive sizes but once the manager on duty came over he changed things around in the computer and gave me the 3/8" sets and my additional 10% off military discount. He said that he just got back from big corporate meeting that they told him that Lowes tools were going to be made by Stanley starting next year so you could probably expect allot of the current line like the ones I bought to be blown out after Christmas to make room for the new Stanley made tools. He said they even had some print outs that had displays saying "Kobalt by Stanley".

It looks like Lowes is blowing out their Kobalt 3/8" socket set for $9.98 as well!

Looks like they may have caught the error. I tried to buy a set online to pick up at the store. It said that all of the stores were out of stock when you get to the check out screen. I even checked the other local stores and of the 5 in the area none of them were in stock. Oh well. Maybe someone else will have better luck.

LOL!

Rather that actually correct the error, they disable in-store pickup for the set. There's no question in my mind that this is what they've done since each store has several dozen sets on display in the holiday tool gift section.
