My New Garage Build

Hey Guys,
Here's my new shop build. I'm using the fittings from Socket Systems and building a "monitor" style barn (also known as a "raised center aisle"). It'll be 30X40 with 10' side walls and a total height of 24'.
My drawings are done in Sketch-up and I can't get the damn things to post.
Here's a few photo's of the work done so far.

You won't be able to post the skp files directly. You'll have to export to a jpg (under the file menu) and then post that.

I'm actually a bit further along but I didn't want to post more photo's at a time than that.
I'll try to post a few more tonight.
I've received all of the fittings from Socket systems and should finish painting them tonight. I've scheduled a shop raising for the 21st of July and I'm hoping to have all of the frames up that day. My timbers and framing lumber will be delivered Thursday and I'll have time to do some pre-cutting before the build day.

Here's a few more photos. This time of the concrete work and one of the Socket System base plates. Also a shot of the first two pallets of fittings from Socket sys, I think it was 1400 lbs. I finished painting all of the fittings tonight; they're now silver hammer tone.

I assume that you are painting them with some sort of anit-rust stuff?. Are you using PT or did you get some lumber milled?.
My barn is going in just up the road from you in Murphy. I have the land cleared and I want to get started next trip up.

I'm using non-pt'd #1 6x6, the lumberyard is getting them from the treating company but before they are treated. I priced them from a couple of sawmills and the price was about the same; But . . . . the ones from the sawmill weren't kiln-dried nor were they the nominal 6x6 size which means a lot more work for me cutting them down to fit in the sockets.

No problem regarding the info. I'll have more photos after this weekend.

All of the timbers, framing lumber, & OSB was delivered yesterday. Today I cut all of the haunch braces and began cutting the timbers to length; that should take the weekend.

The first photo is the sub-assembly of the upper roof and the next are the drill jig for the haunch braces.
So far I'm pretty pleased with the Socket Systems products.

These should have come before the ones in my previous post.
The first is my version of work smart not hard. The 14" x 21 ft LVL beams were on top of lumber stacks. So I used my car dollies to move them. The other is the 18' scissors lift I bought, I'll sell it when the shop is finished.

Is that a Stage III Max Wedge or Hemi 64 ? I use to have a 64 Max Wedge 415 HP Belvedere Station Wagon...it would run D Stock automatic...steel body and would pull the front wheels off the ground...SWEET!

OK, I need to get this thread back on track. I'm way behind on posting the photos and giving a little commentary.
These 3 photos are of the first frame going up. I had 10 or 11 friends over a few weeks ago and we spent a day assembling and raising all of the frames. I had cut all of the timbers beforehand.

Here's one showing all 6 frames up at the end of the frame, the next one will give you an idea of the size; that's a friends LC that we used to winch the frames.

Here I am the next day beginning to put up the purlins. I hate ladders! The scissors lift was a great buy and I use it almost every time I work on the building. At full extension I can reach the peak of the roof.

I had a problem with the frames sagging. It's hard to believe but the 6x6 posts and lower roof beams flexed enough for the top of the 10' wall to be 6" wider at the top than the bottom; and this is without any additional weight (the roof). Only one photo of the frames and braces but the small brace is the size recommended by Socket Sys and the large brace is the one a friend suggested (he was in Alaska when we did the shop-raising) we install after using a come-along to draw the top back together. To be fair to Socket Sys I built to the widest they design for (30') and I added the extra weight of the upper structure. If anyone is more interested I'll tell more about this.

This is how 2 people install 2 14"x21' long LVL beams 9' high without killing ourselves. Unfortunately the forklift will only go up 10' so we had to be creative with the scrap 6x6 material.

Here the gurts are being installed; I'm framing the walls so that I've got a normal 3 1/2 thick wall for insulation and wiring. It's a little unconventional but what the hell so am I.
Oh yeah, it's been really freakin hot here for the last three weeks.

Maybe tonight, I just came in for lunch.
I worked on it all day Saturday and again today. Last weekend and weekday evenings was a bust; too much rain and lightning.
I'm building the eaves and overhang now, I'm not a carpenter and it's slow going for me.

I know that feeling. Tried to finish my roof today. Lightning hit close by, I forgot all about the ladder, ran and jumped of the edge of the roof in a dead run for the house....

Thanks for the tour !. I have a permit and the foundation starts in 2 weeks. How bad were the scratches,chipping on the powder coating. I remember you saying somethiung about that?.

Robin,
There were some scrapes and scuffs but I talked to Rodger about them and it may not be an issue for you.
Are you coming back through on the way back to Florida?

I've got some more photos and an update on the build.
Socket Sys supplies the clip with the bolt thru it to connect the 2x6 at the eaves with the frames. No photo but the clip attaches to the 2x6 via 2 small screws.(1st photo)
I didn't think that was sturdy enough so I added two lag bolts to each frame and 2x6.

I've found that compensating for the thickness of the steel fittings and any gap that exists (trust me, there will be a gap) required some extra thought.

Here are a few photos of the over hangs and the eaves which is what I've been working on for a couple of weeks. This has been a real learning experience for me; I'm not a carpenter but I've managed to do most of this myself. I'm lucky to have some friends that'll come over and show me what to do and help me some. Then I keep going and figure out the rest.

I've managed to do all of this and only used the ladder one time.
I love the scissor lift; I can raise it to the max height and slide out the platform and work on the highest point on the overhang, OUTSIDE the building.
