Looking at upgrading from a 26" craftsman home edition friction slide box that my parents bought me back in 77 or so. The International's load rating on the bottom cabinet is 52 lbs on 4 drawers, 119 lbs on 5 drawers, & 180 lbs on the full length top drawer. On the top chest it is 54 lbs on 4 drawers, 121 lbs on 2 drawers. Total load rating on the bottom cabinet is 983 lbs & the top is 459 lbs. How do these ratings compare to other boxes in it's price range of 1500? How many home mechanics have over this weight in tools? Just mentally tried to estimate what I have & it's under 500 lbs so it would take a while to put me over. Want to get a big enough box that I won't outgrow it & this looks like the ticket. Are the side boxes useful? The one with this setup says it holds 150 lbs, what do you keep in them, air tools, shop supplies, etc? For the guys that have this box, what do you think of them & would you recommend them to others?

I have seen and considered the smaller 41" International/SPG boxes when I replaced my box last year and they can range in quality. The Canadian built SPG/ International boxes are as good as any I have seen, but the Chinese import models (letter N in model code???) tend to be made from lighter materials and the drawer sides bend/flex more easily. That being said they are more than adequate for a home shop environment for half the cost.

With regard to load rating with a little research I found the 53" North American built roller cabinet has a drawer rating of 125Lbs per drawer for a total of 1755 lbs on only 4 wheels where as the "N" model has total of 983 lbs on six wheels, so that alone will infer lighter materials in construction.

I personally have never had a side cabinet, but I think it would be great for the tools you mentioned as well as various product such as lubricants, cleaners, etc.

If the box is to be used at home use then you will never need another. There will certainly be more than enough space for all your tools. A 56" box and a side cabinet is probably a little "over kill", but what the hell go for it.

This is the link to the Canadian built models: http://www.spginternational.ca/vw/fs/p020.htm

This will be for home use only & once I find a spot for it in the shop will not be moved. Main reason I want/need a larger one than what I have is about a year ago I got frustrated with not having what I needed to work on things so went on a tool buying spree replacing junk such as 'alltrade' pliers with knipex & so on along with getting many tools I didn't already have such as air tools, compressor, etc. Getting to the point of having stuff laying out in the open & don't want it to rust/get lost so having a big enough box to store everything is the plan.

Found the 53", nice box but noticed it was 18" deep vs 24" on the 56" model, would this be an issue?

Yes that certainly would reduce the storage capacity. If the model you are looking at is the CRN560610OR then I think you would be pleased with your purchase.
If the box was to be used in a condition where it would be moved around frequently with heavy loads, then it may end up "racking" or twisting especially on uneven floors, but left stationary on a level floor it should give you years of trouble free service as long as the larger drawers are not overloaded.

I bought the 53" International box in February and I'm very happy with it. It seems to be well built and price was right. I bought mine from Carquest - they had a 53" and a 56" on sale at the time and I think they are still on sale now.

timc, what was your impression of them seeing them up close together? Is carquest selling them for anything close to the online price? Think I'm going to call around & see if anyone has them within a 50 mi or so radius of here, good excuse to get on the bike & go for a ride.

I didn't see the 56" but I really like the 53" box I bought. I just checked Carquest's website and see that the box is more expensive in the US. I live in Canada and I paid $1595 Canadian - I see the same box is $1879 US. The decals that it shows on the boxes come "not" installed so you can put them on if you want.
