What exactly do I have here? Norgren water separator?

I picked this up in a boxlot at an auction.
I think it's a water separator for an air compressor, but I really don't know for sure.

So what exactly is it, and how do I use it?


These two things also came with it.

Well... in general that type of separator isn't sufficient for paint sprayer hoses. Of course it depends on what you're spraying; if it's lawn furniture, go for it. If it's a hotrod you spent years building... you need more.

Yes,But it looks pretty old. I dont know if I would trust that with a nice paint job. Air tools no problem.

I'm not going to be too fussy about it, but I do wan't it to come out half decent.

Maybe I'll use it along with an inline "desiccant" dryer and do some experimenting to see how it works out.

I have to ask, is there a number on that first item? Is there a glass or plastic sight glass on the top? If so you may have an oiler....

Get what you can afford. Like any finish job, all the hard work is in preparation. Ruining that hard work at the end makes for a bad day.

The typical el-cheapo disposable dessicant canisters don't have much moisture capacity. They're OK for small jobs, but I wouldn't trust them for body panels. At a minimum I'd be looking at a mounted dessicant system. More money than a disposable inline, but still much less than a decent dryer.

I see on the top there is a small opening, window if you will, that has a tube in it. If that tube is in glass or the window is closed with glass then it might be an oiler. Oilers drip oil into the flowing air for down line tools.

I agree, it looks more like a lubricator then a filter. A real old one maybe.


When it comes to painting, quality filters are very important. Bowl filters are not that good because they restrict air flow too much for HVLP spray guns, but they can be used. It's better to use an in-line Desiccant filter/moisture separator.
For most home set ups, I recommend a disposable desiccant filter at the gun, and a canister style filter with a reusable filter element at the compressor.

The regulators you have will work great for painting. They are the exact same type found on pressure pot paint sprayers.

That's defiantly an oiler.
See the filler cap at the top, a filter would not have that.
Most oilers don't work very well, especially when you have a long hose attached.
In my opinion the ones made by Bijur are the only ones worth having.

An oiler certainly would not be of any help!

top is an oiler, I have used ones just like it in the past. You dial in the drips per min, or min per drips, by letting air flow at intended flow rates and count the drips over time. Sorry to be a downer but the regulators are likely so old that the diaphragms and seals are shot. does not hurt to pressurize them and see if they work.

For paint you need a regulator and a coalescing filter feeding to a desiccant filter. Clean dry air is a 100% must for modern paints.

That is a particulate filter, not for water removal.

Not according to the label on the box.
It says "for use in general applications where effective filtration and water removal are required."
