Here are a couple of my newly-acquired Prentiss # 92. It's an oldie. So far I have just oiled it up a bit, and spent some time getting paint drops off of it:

I also just acquired a Prentiss 514 - it's being fitted with jaw inserts this week.

A good welder can fix it. Anything can happen to a vise that has been used for sixty years.
We'd like to see it.
And welcome to the gj.

That thing is toast. Dangerous to boot. Send it to me and I will dispose of it safely. :bounce:

I think that brazing the back of the slide will be no problem at all. I would avoid clamping anything huge in it (to keep the pressure off of the repaired section of the slide).

Yup, first thing is to blast it all clean & then drill a hole at the end of the crack to stop it spreading any further. 1/4in bit should be ok. Then grind out the crack into a V-groove & weld it back together.
I'd fasten it in another vise while welding so it doesn't deform etc. It doesn't have to be clamped down tight, just tight enough to stop it ending up wider. Start at the open end.

Ok, Thanks for your advice. I wasnt sure if it could be fixed or not. Does anyone know about how much it would be worth? I bought it for $20.00 I figured I couldnt go wrong! Thank you!

A damaged Monarch 213 just sold on eBay for $41. It had the opposite problem of yours... the slide looked good, but the body was cracked (actually had a big chunk missing) IMO that's a LOT harder to repair, so you did great for $20.

Repaired and restored, I wouldn't be surprised if you could get $100 for it. They're pretty rare and the lion just has a coolness factor that's unmatched.

This is excellent advise. If it were mine, I'd use a 3/8-bit at the end of that crack, just to be sure I got it all, but that's about it.
If you don't have another vise (the rest of you guys DO realize that having only one vise in the shop is considered normal, right?:lol_hitti), you can clamp it with a few C-clamps.

I thought I was *getting better* by selling one of my 21 (22?) vises yesterday (614 1/2 Athol)... & first thing this morning a friend calls me up & tells me I can have "a boat anchor" he has laying in his garage... It's another 614 1/2 Athol...

I'm conflicted.

Sold this one for $150:

Here is a a little Wilton baby foster vise I picked up at the auction a couple of weeks ago. :bounce:
Still undecided on whether to keep it or pass it on... I'm not too crazy with the clamp on base, but it does make it convenient to move around I guess.
Date code of 6-46 on the slide. Can somebody for sure clarify what that date means?

Condition when I got it:

That small clamp on Wilton is rare, refurbished, they are going around $250 on Ebay. That 1946 is an accurate date and another thing, those castings Wilton quit making almost 60 years ago. If you decide to keep it, try not to modify it. Its money in the bank!

scored a free Wilton vise from craigslist. i'm de-rusting my valve spring compressor in my electrolysis bucket right now, but plan on dunking this as soon as i have it apart...

can anyone tell me anything about it? is it for woodworking? machining? low-profile run-of-the-mill bench vise? somebody replaced the handle with a piece of pipe with caps on the ends - does anyone make replacement handles? also, what's up with that piece that pops up out of the top of the dynamic jaw?

forgive my iphone photos:

I had to weld up a major crack on this one. The key is taking your time to spot weld it and get it lined up right before welding on it.

Good luck and make sure to post pics as you restore it!

That is a woodworker's vise. The pipe with caps is the handle that vise came with. I don't know what the pop- up piece is the front jaw is for.

I think thats for use with bench dogs. Allows you to clamp things larger than the normal capacity of the vise.
Workpiece sits on top of bench. One end rests against dogs and then you close the vise until that little tab clamps against the other end of your workpiece.

As I have said many times in this post, AutoPts knows his Wiltons!

And we are just over 1,750 replies and 150,000 views! Wow! Is there any way to see if this thread has been linked to on other forums?

The Desmond Stephens company is still in business and about 5 miles from my house. I don't think they make vises anymore and haven't for a number of years but I do know they make dressers for grinding wheels and have made them for years http://www.desmond-stephan.com/ Almost every bench vise at our shop was or is a Desmond Simplex. It's unbelievable as to how many of these made it to the dumpster too. "5S" has turned them into scrap metal.

The lady at Desmond Stephen says they sold the Vise business to Rigid and Rigid sold some of it to someone else.

I picked up this little Parker #94 at a pawn shop today. I paid a little too much but I love the Deco look of this thing. It's in real good shape, almost no slop. Imagine a vise that looks fast just sitting there........

My Rock Island 574 is back in action with its new jaws !!. Thanks to AP_mech for making them and thanks to Mjozefow for setting it up .

They close perfectly now.
rockislandnewjaw1.jpg

I filed a couple of grooves in the static jaw to help with holding round stuff. It works. Hardly any clamping pressure is needed.

New guy here. Just finished speeding through 1760 posts - very impressive. Just picked this up, anyone have any info regarding its origins? Sorry about the quality of the last picture. It reads 64. Saw a few examples here, but none with the # 64 identifier. Anybody have any copies of old vise catalog pages?

I might be getting rid of this in the not-so-distant future, so I wanted to go ahead and post it up here. This is a Columbian No. 608 with 8" jaws and weighing in at 180 lbs or so. Like a dummy, I cleaned it up before taking any "before" pictures, so this is all I've got.

It came from a Mac truck mechanic place that went out of business right here in Huntington. It's kind of a funny story how I got it. I found out about the sale on CL on a Sunday night, so at 8 a.m on Monday morning I was knocking on the door. I looked through what I thought was everything and saw a couple cool things, but nothing that I really wanted to buy, so I was about to leave when all the sudden I realized that I had walked right past the tool room. Way back in the corner, I saw this beast hiding on a cluttered and greasy bench and knew that I had to have it. At the time, it was the biggest vise I'd ever seen. When I picked up the price tag, I was heartbroken to see that it was being held for someone even thought they hadn't paid for it, but then I saw that it was only to be held until 9 am that day. So I asked the owner if it was close enough, because it was about 8:50 by that time but he said he wanted to give the buyer until 10 to show up. That was a long hour! At exactly 10, I asked him again and he called the guy and my heart sank again because the guy said he was on his way and would be there in a half hour. That was a long half hour! Then he made me wait ANOTHER half hour just to be sure the buyer wasn't going to show up!

Finally, at exactly 11 am, I threw the cash at him and the vise was mine. Unfortunately, it was still bolted to the bench so I had to run back home and get a crescent wrench because we couldn't find one anywhere in teh shop. When I got back, the original buyer had finally shown up and he was just standing there next to the vise waiting for me. He was pretty aggravated but I didn't feel bad because I didn't do anything wrong. He had his chance. Anyway, I had paid $150 for it and he asked me if I would take $200 for it. As tempting as it was, I had gone through a lot to get that thing and I wasn't about to let go of my prize. So then he said $250. Still no. $300? I probably should have sold it to him, but it was just not for sale. He ended up making me take his phone number and telling me that he'd be willing to go up to $400 or $500 if I ever decided to sell it! Poor fella. :D

So this thing has been living with me ever since. Without further ado, here are the pics.

Hard to say for sure, but it looks an awful lot like this Erie Tool Works vise I picked up recently.
