My current electrical meter socket is installed on the side of my house right where the new garage breezeway will be. So my plan is to move the meter socket forward toward the front of the house by about 8 feet. There will be a clearance of 24" between the center of the meter socket and the wall of the breezeway.
Does anyone know of a code pertaining specifically to lateral clearance of meter sockets? I read in other places that 110.26 from the NEC may apply due to workspace clearance. If so, does the 30" requirement apply to lateral workspace? If so, does this mean that I need 15" on either side of the meter socket to be in compliance?
One other question. I have an underground electrical service cable from the pole to my current meter socket. My plan is to have the electric company cut power at the pole. I will then have an expert excavator dig down to a few inches above the cable at which point I will hand dig the rest of the way to avoid any damage to the cable. I will then reroute the cable to the new meter socket location. First, does anyone see any problems with this? Second, if by chance the cable is not long enough to be routed to the the socket location, can anyone recommend splices approved for underground use? Thanks.
