Re: My unfinished garage in Vic/Australia

yes lots, I have been going through most of my boxes in my garage and shed to sort everything out. I have thrown out a lot and I have put a fair bit on ebay. One of these things is my oversized milling machine. Once all these things are gone I will reorganise some more and get things ready for the enclosing of the back corner area. I will get the smaller milling machine I own transported as I really need it here. Unfortunetly all of this isn't very impressive to show as I have no before after photos. In about one to two months I should hopefully have some major updates.

Re: My unfinished garage in Vic/Australia

small update on some big works, I have done some massive re-arranging and I am setting up a mini machining center. It took me a surprisingly long time to work out where to put the equipment and at first I din't think it was possible. However I came up with a plan in the end that looks so far to be near on ideal. Here is how it is at the moment:

machine-corner01.jpg

Mill/drill to the left, larger lathe at the back and the small lathe to the right. The clamped on board is where a wall will be. I will also make some shelves where the engine stand is right now. I even went to the trouble of chopping down the spash gaurd on the large lathe to fit right into the corner. It could slide in before because of the brick peer, now after being shortened it can. Looking closely in the back right corner shows where I repainted the splash gaurd after a shorten.

The picture's of that old Bridgeport tracer mill brings back memories of long days making 100's of 304 SS'T parts the hardest way possible. You have an outstanding shop wish mine was as well organized

Re: My unfinished garage in Vic/Australia

thanks, the Syncrotrace mill is gone though and I only have the crappy mill drill left as shown in the picture. I still have a lot of things that don't belong in my workshop but I am getting there. I also still have not made my fabrication table.

Re: My unfinished garage in Vic/Australia

That is a Hare and Forbes model- HM45 to be exact and like all of their mills its lousy for any actual milling other than light cuts. That SCA reel has been on sale a few times since I bought it, oh well. I really recommend it too, it works great. It looks like I might be having some free time coming up in the intermediate future for which I am hoping to get a fair bit done.

Re: My unfinished garage in Vic/Australia

small update: I have now finished the digital readout on my mill for the X and Y axis (finally), and mounted the rubber dust cover on the bottom behind the table after I had to take it off to fit the glass scale and swarf cover.

The Variable speed drive has been temporarily mounted to the side of the unit and I mounted the controls with the direction and speed adjust know on the front top of the machine. In testing this works great and the only thing I wish to change is an increase in the ramp up time, otherwise I have avoided the need for three phase and have variable speed to boot.

I am also in the process of fitting a very basic digital readout on the quill in addition to the other 3 readouts to know how much I am plunging into the material.

Still in repair is the folding rear dovetail column cover which I should be fixing this weekend and also I need to fit a thrust washer to the head lifting handle as it has an obsurd design from new that doesn't last long.

So all in all I will have a very well featured machine albeit flimsy

Re: My unfinished garage in Vic/Australia

benchtop press? the arbor press in my first picture? if so I sold that just the other day and I have this:

http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/on...ss-H-Frame-6000kg.aspx?pid=214467#Description

the problem I find with this is not the pressing power at all but the gap between the two steel supports. I find I can't put much upright before it won't fit. I in hindsight should of bought something better but I guess it's like I would have the room for it at the moment.

I might also buy the 20 ton unit in the future, I have this in mind:

Re: My unfinished garage in Vic/Australia

arbor presses have the advantage of a quick action, the one I did have before getting rid of it was rated at 2 tons so while it didn't have a high capacity it had the speed. A good example of what they are good for is punching small things out, so you can snap it down quickly to punch it but obviously not very large or thick. When it is within it's capacity it's very fast at production. Doing a whole heap of belt rivets would be another good eample.

Re: My unfinished garage in Vic/Australia

Nice workshop Sam.

What made you get into fabrication after being an electrician? Are you trade qualified or did you just get into it as a hobby and go from there?
I only ask as I have always thought it would be something I would like to do on the side, but have no engineering experience whatsoever :)

Oh and I just checked out your website, I wish some of those Toyota conversion parts were available years ago when I was messing around with 4a's :D

Re: My unfinished garage in Vic/Australia

thanks

I have been playing around with things since I was a teenager and I became an industrial electrician because it just came up really and I had no idea what I wanted to do with myself. However even after a short time into my apprenteship I found it wasn't for me, but being in an old fashed sort of family I stuck with it till the end. Then after I left I went to another job and again became a plant maintenance worker as a two man electrical team. After eventually leaving I changed industries. Although during this whole time I unofficially learnt how to use an arc+mig welder, lathe and other bits on site without most of the mechanical guys knowing. Well that's probably 5x the answer you wanted but there you go.

I also enrolled in a TAFE night course in general machining which was great and I highly recommend it for yourself and the other Sam here. Goverment sponsered and you get to learn how to do all the important stuff from grinding your own drill bits and lathe tooling to using a lathe and a mill.

I used to previously use my dads workshop but that was really getting to me, eventually I moved out and started setting my own workshop up. It's nothing sort of amazing how much money it takes to build a brick building and fill it with equipment. Even the wiring with a super special discount cost in the region of $2000 in the end to do, although to be fair it is the most extreme wiring system I have ever seen anywhere for just a small building.

Re: My unfinished garage in Vic/Australia

Thanks for the reply mate.

So other than the Toyota stuff, what sort of work do you do? Was it just a matter of slowly getting your name out there? Sorry to take your thread a little OT, I'm just curious.

Re: My unfinished garage in Vic/Australia

well I spent a year and a half working on road line marking machines, building them mostly.

But as of the start of July I decided to take a chance and just go full time making my parts in my own workshop. I do just Toyotas at the moment and I was going to have an alternator replacment for mini's but had no interest at all. So after the list of parts I want to get out there I want to get into Mazda RX7 parts. For example the series I wish to work on have a serious power windows issue. I want to have a full plug in replacement that changes the pannel, switch and all the wiring to something new and completely reliable. I have a guy who I give some cash at times to help me out who has the RX7 of which I am going to do my prototype work with.

I have done odd jobs here and there like Skyline R31 diff conversions into a Corolla, 2 sprinters and a first gen Celica. Then other smaller welding/ fabrication things and I want to get into doing engine conversions for people.

I got my name out there in australia by helping people out with information in the corolla/sprinter forums and also writing technical articles. The parts came later. After selling a bit nationally I had a dry spell where I sold nothing for 3 months. I then managed to finish my website and also became much more active on international forums. This is when I started getting all my American orders in. Many people still don't choose my products but a large amount know about me now. At the very least people are starting to hear about my good service and genuine desire to help out. I am going to have another big layout change in the parts part of my website that makes things more proffesional and easier to understand again.

Re: My unfinished garage in Vic/Australia

Well a little late:

linisher1.jpg

I bought this off my brother because I need a linisher often and I was using a mini Aldi machine made for one of those hobby guys or something.

This jammed up the first time I took the belt off. In my frustration I in the next time I had a moment took the machine apart. I found the slide shaft looking a bit sad and also it had damaged bolts. I couldn't replace them as they where some bizarre thread and I couldn't remember where I left my whitworth spanners at the time. So I thought I would drill the ends deeper and put an M8 tap down there. Nice plan till I accidently dropped it with my butter fingers and cracked the tap. So plan B was to make a new shaft, I used a 25mm instead of 1" (25.4mm) hard chrome bar which is as good as it gets. Putting the spring retaining pin in place and tapping the ends I had a new slider rod. With a bit of grease and a reassemble it worked like a dream. Now all I need is to source is some different belts, glue some disks on the side and I am ready to go

thought I would show something I have been working on. I had to do only 3mm deep cuts with the mill and even then it very much let me know it wasn't happy doing so.

Re: My unfinished garage in Vic/Australia

thanks it's going to be a while though.

I can't remember if I mentioned it previously but next on the list is a 7 meter I beam to cross the whole width of the garage. Off this will be a girder trolley attached to a 500kg engine crane. I will have pics when it happens

Re: My unfinished garage in Vic/Australia

I could use a vehicle to test my electric concepts so I am massively modifing this:

002.jpg

and this is where the hub goes:

003.jpg

It will have the quad bike wheels as pictured on front and back and at this stage a 500W 36V motor which I will run off 4 Li-Po batteries making up a 10A/h 37V pack.

I watched your video and that linisher looks pretty good, most surprising it's all metal. I made do with a miniture unit for a long time before I bought what I have now.

Re: My unfinished garage in Vic/Australia

it would be high however I am going to extend the frame between the head-stem to the deck to compensate. The batteries are going to be much thinner as well which is handy so the deck height will end up being about the same but with more ground clearence that original. I am going to make it have around 120mm of clearence. I will go all over the place with it including off road. It should also with it's wide tyres have no problem riding down the beach on the loose dry sand, I would just lower the pressure a bit.

that would be sick romping it in the sand sweet ,and it would be good riding at night low noise ,could put some lights on it . iv kinda given up on my scooter { green one] its in pieces still have the frame and wheels but over it those **** pb engines stuffed me up so i might be getting rid of it if ya intrested in it ,but not 100% sure if im keeping it

Re: My unfinished garage in Vic/Australia

as promised update time:

drill-grinder-area01.jpg

From bottom left to right:

- Hitachi drop saw

- Echoma sheer cutter

- bench grinder with course stone, polishing wheel and soon enough a wire wheel

- Mini bench grinder that's going to be modded to hold a hand grinders slitting disks to do things like cut bolts in half and trim sheets

- Kincrome with fine wheel and a modified "Multi-tool" to suit

- Bench grinder with a tungsten grade stone and also modified to hold a cylinder flapper wheel, very handy

- Mini pedastal drill purely for de-burring

- Medium pedastal drill purely for spotting with a center drill.

- Big linisher, had a rep come in and am getting 8 custom belts made for it, two of them being polishing scotch-brite belts.

and lastly my old favorite the floor standing Hitachi drill in the middle.

I worked out what the equipment alone is worth in this corner and it came to a disturbing amount. I do love it though and I would make the almost exact same choices all over again given the choice.

drill-grinder-area02.jpg

A close up of my twin drill press bracket for spotting and de-burring. Don't ask me how there's easily over a solid days work in this and moving the grinder next to it. The positioning is ideal though and I think it's worth the trouble and having "bench mount" drills actually bolted down is a first for me.

So all in all it's much like my machining center- small space, high usability and due to careful planning.

Nice neat set up you have there.
I myself have been trying to find a floor mounted pedestal drill for the last few months with not much luck. Might have to fork out for a new one.

Re: My unfinished garage in Vic/Australia

I looked around for quite a while before deciding on that one. For me it had to have a decent range of speeds and be solid. Many of them had thin or small tables and light heads. The large Hare and forbes model at my old work seemed medicore overall. This is the only model that appealed to me. It has a handy light built into it at the bottom and a near on useless lazer guide. I know it it's not super cheap at about $550 but trust me it's worth it. The bench standing model is obviously much cheaper. If you interested it's a B16RM.

Another piece of advice for anyone reading- if you do any reasonable amount of drilling buy the best vice you can afford. The one in the picture is a drilling vice and includes a very good lock down system when clamping. Add to that it winds beautifully with a bearing at the back of the moving jaw. The only thing I had ever used previously anywhere where vices that would lift and tilt when I did them up. Having this now it's bizarre for me, I just do it up and that's it, no trying to second-guess where it will end up. I wish I would of bought it instead of my previous model 2 years back.

Re: My unfinished garage in Vic/Australia

Oh I thought I might as well add I started off just wanting everything might in this workshop but now I rely on it for my sole income making custom auto parts (nothing Mitsui sorry evo man). That's why I can justify having three drills, I need to do a bulk amount of work and I would loose way too much time winding the table up, changing the drill to a center drill to spot the work, lower it back down and finally put the right drill bit back in.

Hi sams,

subscribed,
like it 'cause it's not all easily bought, but heavily thought.
Keep it goin' as it is a good inspiration for those with less space and not willing or able to spend the money as it would be out of fashion by tomorrow.

Just great
Best of luck from Germany

Re: My unfinished garage in Vic/Australia

thanks and yes it's pretty obvious now I spend hours just thinking on how I am going to do things. Well I must be doing something right because this arrangement of tools that I have now is the same layout which I planned 2 years ago when I first set foot in the garage. The exception is the linisher, it doesn't belong there and will go elsewhere in due time.

I have a strong aim on here to give people ideas and it must be working because I have had a few people saying they will use my bolt storage concept. The amount of space I have here is 7 x 9 meters however I have a 1.5 x 3M corner that is not part of it due to the water pipes underground. Sure it's hard but the bonus is with such a tight space I should in theory be able to work faster in the end because everything is so close together and hence less walking around.

Oh and by the way I am originally from Ulm, I can still understand old Schwäbisch but unfortunetly can't speak it anymore.
