Cool Tip when changing your motor oil.

You know when you pull your drain plug and the oil hits the drain pan turns right around and ends up all over you or your floor! This is what I did and it works awesome!!! Took a old scrubbing disc off a floor scrubber and laid it inside my drain pan,, its amazing how well it works defusing that high speed oil. Not a drop flys out!

Good idea. I have a bent up street sign that I wedge into the drain pan as a splash shield, let the oil hit the sign and drain down into the pan.

Great idea, but if you do not have the scrubber pad, get a cleanable furnace filter. The green ones are well put together,cost peanuts and simple to cut to form.

Those pads also make great tire scrubbers when cut into smaller pieces. (Great for whitewalls and raised white letters)

Can't beat the fumoto valves. Just slap a hose on it, turn the valve and drain it into a five gallon bucket with a pour-lid. Easy to empty when it is full..

It has been documented on another site that done the fumoto valve sits in the oil pan deeper than just flush, all the oil cannot be drained and this can less to quite a buildup. Anyone here have opinions on this either way.

Cut reliefs into the end that sits in the pan if you're worried about the lip sitting higher than the bottom of the pan. The great thing is oil is always coming and going with regular changes. Same idea with transmissions and dropping the pan only vs full flush to get out all fluid.


I've had a Fumoto on my truck for a little while. Works great for really quick changes and no problems.

When i change oil, I use a 5 gallon bucket that is cut off 5'' above the bottom,oil doesn't splash out.........

It will depend on the car - mine has the drain plug on the side of the pan so it wouldn't make any difference. I've thought about getting a valve but just haven't done it yet.

I wonder if those pads would work for antifreeze? I am going to try it next time I drain some antifreeze. It always splashes and gets all over everything! I hate antifreeze! UGH!

Dont Know?? Why Not? I know what you mean that **** is slimy!! Gear oil ***** too!! Diesel fuel................ Blah!! Stink!!!! I use a 5 gallon Bucket for antifreez. Works pretty good.Someone else said to use a heater filter if you dont have a pad.

I just hold the pan up close to the drain when I first remove the plug, then slowly place it back on the ground. I've done it this way a dozen times and no splatter

I've seen those Fumoto valves used in the ag industry on alot of tractors, their good valves! Pretty handy not having to search for the correct size wrench and the size you need is always the one you just lost!

If you don't like the oil splashing up, get the mitivac.

You will never change your oil the same again!

The big scotchbrite pad is a good idea. I'm too cheap, I just toss down my sheet of cardboard, it doubles as a "floor creeper"

Hey, I need to do two oil changes in the near future: '05 Silverado and '05 Malibu. What size Fumoto valve is going to fit those cars? I have no idea what size drain plugs are...never paid any attention to that fact.

Whoops! Just found application chart on their website. Looks like older model vehicles are not covered, like muscle-era cars.

For the car being on the lift, it probably works damn good for you. How high is the car up as compared to the oil drain pan ? Could it be raised to reduce the velocity of the oil free falling ?

I figured our many years ago that only poorly engineered vehicles will puke oil all over when the engine oil is drained. Well engineered vehicles will predicably drain in a nice even stream where you expect it to go.
If you need this tip, you own a poorly engineered vehicle. Time to replace your driver.

Uh, wouldn't it just make sense to raise the vehicle to the appropriate height for the task, relative to the tools one has? If I had a lift and an oil catcher that was only four and a half feet tall, I'd probably raise the vehicle only to 5' before starting so that the oil wouldn't fall that far.

Certainly this would be a sucky height to do any serious work under the car at, but an oil change is so quick that I would think crouching down for the minute that one is underneath wouldn't be too bad.

Or, get a taller oil catcher if it's chronic problem...

I don't have the problem of oil splashing everywhere when it hits the bucket.. I locate the bucket not more than 12 inches away from the sump...no mess.

I agree with TWX...emptying the oil from the engine is a 5 minute job..with no dramas.

Drain plugs are threaded, a bit of complexity there.

I have had several vehicles with fumoto valves including some trucks that were heavily offroaded. Never had one spill a drop of oil when they weren't supposed to.

I allways got the version with the extended ****** so I could put a hose on it.

It is way more likely that you will strip out the stock oil pan or drain plug, than you will have trouble with the fumoto valve.

On my daily driver audi I use a Pella oil extractor. Even easier than the Fumoto valve. Put the drain tube in place of the dipstick. Pump if a few times, go get a beer, come back and the oil is all drained.

This all goes out the window if your working on other peoples cars.

C'mon Gary. Are you serious or just trolling. I suspect the latter.

If you do many oil changes you’re gonna get some on you. My 2500HD will sling oil all the way to the neighbor’s backyard. On the lift, I set a drain pan on top of the trans jack and bring it as close as practical to the drain; it still splashes – even after whacking the corner of the skid plate with a hack saw.

The “Liquid Lubricant Energy Diffuser” (buffer pad) is a great idea!

I store my changed oil in a 5-gallon bucket. It used to be a pool clorine container, so it has a screw-on top. The nice thing is I can take that bucket and slide it completely under our 2500HD and just drain the 10 quarts directly into the bucket. >whew<, 'cause my drain pan is only about 7 quarts in capacity.

We can't be the only shop that makes these.We have a square oil catcher extender thats sold for doing ****** services.It has a small circular catch basin in the center that has holes for the oil to drip thru.This is where we have placed a piece of screen mesh over the top to keep the backspatter to a minimum.Screw it to the sides to suspend it slightly and now you don't have to fish around for all those dropped bolts.

I've seen paint booth filters used also-just cut to fit.

the pontiac chart goes back to 65' but i'd bet those applications go back even further

Hanging down from what? Too many moving parts? A lever, spring and ball...It's a spring loaded ball valve pretty much. I think you run the risk of completely destroying a stock oil pan bolt than this thing...

I've run them on all my cars. I have on on my STi now for 5 years and the car is no where near stock. Heavily modded suspension and lowered and I've never once had an issue with it leaking, getting knocked open, or hit.

If you are worried about something ripping it off, there are going to be other things that are going to rip off the car before the drain fumoto valve is. This valve will out live the life of my car hands down.

Agree, a must have. I've recently bought a brand new S-Type.. it comes with a shorter ****** that the N type. I think it's only available at the official Fumoto valve store for the US, Qwik Valve
