Re: hot rod garage in the works.38x56

Congratulations on making it into the Popular Mechanics article, E.rodz!

I think you and I were the only garages included that actually involved a car parked in a building. :) But it was great to see another GJer in there.

Thanks jack i have been following your new lift install and this is definitly one of my next projects to be done.thanks for the inspiration!

whooo wtf. were did summer go?:headscratjust been bouncing from project to project spent a little time on a tire rack and storage to get things cleaned up and off the floor.
fishingtrip2011017.jpg
started off like this what a frickin mess.what to do with limited cash.this is what I came up with.
fishingtrip2011018.jpg
here are some of the supplies 1.5 emt conduit,1/16 cable,1.5 scrap aluminum tube, some hose clamps,a couple of 2x4's,some screws, more scrap aluminum, some magnets, some foil tape and some beer.
fishingtrip2011024.jpg don't want to forget the help.here one of my boys and his friend bending some tube this could also be subsituted for a 2x6 cut into a u bend. use what you have is my way of life.anything you can do to get your kids involved.
fishingtrip2011025.jpg
fishingtrip2011026.jpg
welded some flat stock put over a pice of pipe and beat into submission.the ends will then just be hose clamped.

fishingtrip2011030.jpg

the 2x4 mounted to the studs and then wrapped with aluminum foil tape.
fishingtrip2011046.jpg

Wow, just awesome. I laughed with surprise when I first saw the new front of your garage.

Impressive how much work you put into your home. Take a little time to reflect - you should be very proud.

Thanks for your comments.I do like to take pride in my work as much as it ***** to take that much time to build things after they are done it is all worth it.

You slay me! You are so talented in so many different disciplines that it boggles one's mind:thumbup:
Thanks for the intrest and your positive comments. I hope to continue my learning until the day I die.Every day is a new adventure.

Finaly had a chance to try out the hoist beam. wanted to see if the front of the garage pulled off but it stayed put with no creeking or groning. Guessing the box of concrete rocks weighs around 800# so i think it should be able to handle a snowmobile or a motor pretty easy.

well hope everyone enjoyed there summer as much as we did. Spent alot of quality time with the family and did not get beans done at home but still making forward progress its just in baby steps.here are some more picts of the new tire rack and storage.
012-2.jpg
2x4 to mount the foam to and some angle clips to hang the turnbuckles and cables to.simple and easy just like me.
024-2.jpg
I had a bunch of left over foil foam from another project so this is what we used it for for now.
020-1.jpg
the hinge for the foam is just foil tape and it hinges down with magnet tape on the edge to hold it shut hope to keep the dust out and the over spray off.

Is the trap door into your attic big enough to store a snowmobile up there? or were you just referring to being able to lift a snowmobile into say the bed of your truck? Just curious ... By the way, Your place gets more awesome everytime you post it here! Congrats on the magazine spread too!

Breeze the door in the attic is not big enough to store a sled up there just was hoping to be able to lift one out of the bed of a truck or in it.was hoping it would be able to suport at least 600# and it seems like this shall be no problem at least with no snow load.if nothing else if life gets to bad I should be able to hang myself with out the garage coming down on me and just injuring me and not ending it.:lol_hitti
ps.hoping to finish our killer clock soon.

Great pictures of your son
Thanks Life is good hope you can enjoy time with your kids.
Is the gantry crane something you made and if so how about some build info on it?
The system that you are referring to is called a bridge crane. they can be hung from the ceiling or on column like this one the beams are 12" cut down the middle length wise to form a T this helps keep wall space loss to a minimum. the bridge beam is a 10" if my memory serves correct the end truck are made from a couple of pieces of angle iron the wheels are flanged on one side. all of this was from pieces of iron rounded up from jobs for years before I had enough to build this.

Thanks for the info. By the way, it is never wrong that the garage has more square footage than the house.

Ohh how I hate rust repair work!!! I bought this truck new my first new vehicle ever the truck started showing bubbles in the lower rockers so I figured I would replace the outer rocker before the rust got carried away. What ever GM. used to coat there frames and suspension with is the worst **** ever!!!! it is like a soft wax over bare steel well living in Mn. we use alot of salt on our roads but this is the worst rusting body I have ever seen.I started off with a pressure washer trying to clean up the frame so I could use some pour 15 on it to slow things down.keep in mind the truck is 9 years old and I take great care of everything that I own.I did not think that I would need a complete restoration.:wtf: check out some of these picts. and be thankfull you don't live in MN. if you own one of these.

I thought Mass. was bad, wow!
wow is right I pulled the box off to just clean up the frame and coat it with something better and now I am in the middle of a full restoration.:shocking::wtf: not what I had in mind!!!

I scraped and wire brushed and also used a chipping hammer for welding to knock of the thick flaky rust.then used a product called Por. 15 just a word of advice for this product USE GLOVES! this stuff does not come off with anything when its dry.much to my surprise the brake lines looked even worse! if that is possible  I went on line to see if other people were having the same issues and holy **** looks like there is a ton of people with the same or worse problems I will see if I can find the link interesting reading!!
IMAG0222.jpg

the rear diff. cover was so rusted I thought it would start to leak so I replaced it with a new one.new shocks, new tailgate hinges, new rockers.new bump stops.this just blows never expected to buy a new vehicle and have problems to this extent when I take such good care of my things.:eyecrazy:

Did mine last spring and there hasnt been really any bad salt or anything but it still looks like it was just done. I was worried that I was waisting my time with the por 15 but Ive talked to a good amount of people who swear by the stuff.
