Does this MAC wrench have a purpose?

Several weeks ago I got an old set of 3/4” drive sockets at a local Humane Society barn sale (see posting:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=117882 ).

At the bottom of the steel SO toolbox was a large single-ended MAC box wrench with a round shank. The wrench is a 15/16” and measures about 20” long. The box is off-set from the 5/8" diameter shank by about an inch. Stamped on the shank is, “15/16 MAC S 77 B USA“.

I don’t recall ever seeing a general-use wrench of this style before … was it designed for a specific use or application? Or is it just a really beefy wrench for those really stubborn 15/16” fasteners?

Almost certainly a specific use built wrench, similar in concept to the various "distributor wrenches" used to get to the Dist. clamp bolt.

Exactly what for? :dunno:

I'm not sure what it's original purpose was, but it would have been a lifesaver on a motor I set the other day - would have saved me from cramming myself up under the base.

1981 catalog lists it as for use on "H8 Caterpillar Steering Clutch".

Thanks, MattT. I knew the old gent that originally owned this toolbox of sockets (his initials, "T.W.", are scribed on this MAC wrench as visible in one of the photos) and he was a heavy equipment mechanic. So your catalog info actually makes a lot of sense ... the wrench was probably designed to address a specific heavy equipment maintenance task.

Unfortunately, I don't think that I'll be working on any H8 Cat steering clutches!
