Here's the problem I have with it... this guy knows that he's purposely decieving gullible buyers into paying an inflated price.

Somehow, it's Ok to criticize new/used car salesmen for doing the same exact thing, yet with tools, it's A-Ok? :lol_hitti

This is no different than car salesmen trying to push "treatment packages" and other **** onto new vehicle sales, and I've never heard a single person in the know speak positively about that.

These same people though, when questioned about making a 500% profit on an item they bought at a yardsale, say "Oh, it's just capitalism".

Furthermore, for those saying "It's just capitalism", how long do you think our economy would last if its only source of "growth" was selling the same exact wrench over and over again?

I could go further into the true definition, but this most certainly isn't a political forum.

That said, I don't inherently have a problem with resale... there is, however, a moral limit on each individual sale, and a person usually knows in his/her gut if he's overstepping that limit.

So, Snap On buys the same basic prybar from Mayhew? adds slightly different plastic grips and a HUGE amount onto the pricetag.

Actually, it hasn't been confirmed yet. The only thing that has been confirmed is they both sell prybars. It HAS been speculated, and IS quite possible.

I have both SO hard handle (non striking grip) prybars at work and Craftsman hard/soft grip striking cap prybars at home. They both have the same style/type markings and stampings in the metal, both are USA made. (I think Mayhew is the only US manufacturer of such prybars)

In any case, the Craftsman prybars are on par with the SO, just as good.

I have both and the Snap On handles to me are worth the extra money as they look and feel great.

You mean to tell me that you would pay three or more times as much money for prybars that "look and feel great"??? You are using them to pry with, not taking them to the prom and $crew'ng them in the back seat afterward!

10", 12", 17", 25", 31" for $47.51 and <$10 shipping (cheaper if you use Discover and click thru the Discover web site to Sears) http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00947410000P

00947410000-1

$174.24 but they put it in your hot little hand right then.

What deception is there in that ebay listing? He shows a pic of the set and lists the part numbers that are in that set. I see no deception in the ad.

how is he purposely deceiving buyers? if the buy has access to ebay, then the buyer certainly has access to google search.

who is responsible for anyone else's financial CHOICES?

again, google search. just like "those" people here that have been there and done that over and over again with the "oh no, why can't people use search and read instead of starting a new thread?" for those threads that rehash the same old questions.

These same people though, when questioned about making a 500% profit on an item they bought at a yardsale, say "Oh, it's just capitalism".

speak with your wallet. i had to edit and add the following, i am into 70's home audio. there are a couple of big forums on it. i've seen people pick up stuff at garage sales and the like, brag about how they got it for 12 bucks, know nothing about it until they join the board and then learn from the "experts" more about it because the first question is "what's it worth?" then they find out that it's a desirable piece. deep down, you know they have no interest in the equipment, because you have seen it so many times before, and that they are there to get a valuation and then when they do, you see it posted in the classified section for an exorbitant amount. now i think that is pretty dumb on the sellers part because you know they are in it for the cash, which is fine, but what happens, is that eventually they get **** hurt because they were called out, reprimanded, insulted or simply no one jumped on their item. in my opinion, their only desire of joining is to "get rich quick" and not actually about the big picture, which in this case, is discussing and enjoying tools.

Furthermore, for those saying "It's just capitalism", how long do you think our economy would last if its only source of "growth" was selling the same exact wrench over and over again?

there is no "true definition", but there is certainly a question of what kind of politics do you consider it to be for condemning a seller for giving any prospective buyer of his item, the option of: to buy, or to simply not to buy? and if the buyer isn't as smart to "market value", it's the sellers fault, yet again, you would condemn a newb for starting a new thread asking the question of value vs name and yell about search function.

irony, how does it work?

That said, I don't inherently have a problem with resale... there is, however, a moral limit on each individual sale, and a person usually knows in his/her gut if he's overstepping that limit.

the person "overstepping that limit", are you specifying the seller, the buyer, or both?

If I was that guy I'd block you from bidding on future auctions too. A few of you guys are the exact people who make selling on ebay a PITA. Demanding & think everyone is out to get you. Just like the people who buy an item knowing the shipping price, then ding you for high shipping charges....if you don't like it, DON'T BUY IT!

I think the world, and this forum, is split evenly between people who think it's ok to price gouge and those who think it's morally wrong.
That's cool with me and I don't let it bother me, because I also believe that karma evens it all out eventually.

Don't understand why he is turning down $55, and $57.50. Alright, we'll try $60.

He is not price gouging. Price gouging is when you raise the price of an item above market price when no alternative retailer is available. If someone can access ebay.com, they can access snapon.com.

What would be an acceptable price to you for someone selling a brand new set?

Should he sell them at a loss?

Should he sell them for for the exact same price that Snap-on charges? If he does that, he will lose money because of the ebay and paypal fees.

Sellers have no obligation to sell something at the lowest price.

Do you think its price gouging when there are two gas stations at the same intersection and one of them is charging $.05 more per gallon?

That is different, not hundreds of dollars in the making

O.K. maybe I should have used the term "taking advantage of the gullible".
But, no matter, they are both in the same league as far as I'm concerned.

You managed to type several paragraphs in response, and still completely miss at least part of the point of my post.

Also, resale =/= capitalism.

edit: Additionally, I would have to consider anyone who is openly willing to overpay this much for an item, to be mentally challenged. Would you approve of someone tricking a special needs person into signing over their SSI checks? I'm not trying to be even the slightest bit funny here.

So are you saying that anyone buying the Snap on version over the Mayhew version of the same metal part of the prybar is a bit "special?"

Just wondering like...

i am missing "at least part of the point" in your post? what point?

the point that YOU think anytime someone lists a sale price starting above retail is somehow deceiving gullible people?

the point that YOU think anytime someone MAKES A CHOICE to buy an item at a higher price than it can be found elsewhere, that the seller is gouging?

the point that if someone doesn't agree with you, that they have lower moral standards,

or the best part of all your posts combined:

Additionally, I would have to consider anyone who is openly willing to overpay this much for an item, to be mentally challenged.

are you kidding me?

example, i bought a pass thru set from the local cornwell dealer. brand new. paid almost a 100 bucks. now i know the dealer certainly did not pay that much for the set.

i could have bought the set cheaper on ebay. how do i know this? there was a used set a few days ago that started at 40 dollars.

i also could have just bought the max axess set from sears for 70 dollars and that set has 51 pieces.

so i must be RETARDED for doing that? i suppose that anyone else that buys from a local dealer must be retar...... "mentally challenged", right?

seriously, i could buy everything i could ever want for pennies on the dollar buy scouring the net, yard sales, estate sales and any other means that nets me the most product for the least cash.

but i paid that much for the set because:

1. the dealer made me his first stop that morning.
2. i made it very clear to him prior to that on the phone, that i am NOT a professional mechanic, that i only do some mechanical work on the side.
3. my purchases from him were going to be less than 125.00 at any given time with a frequency of once a month at the most.

why would i do that? because i wanted to see how customer service oriented this dealer was. i wanted to ask him some questions about some products in person that he had on his truck.

he answered my questions. at no time did he pressure me to buy anything, nor did he keep looking at his watch.

i bought that set because i wanted it and this guy was a stand up dealer who will stand behind the product his company sells.

and i'll throw in that i know you are not the only person in this thread that believes the seller is "preying" on the "gullible".

sorry, but there is no "preying" going on from this seller. look through his feedback for the past couple of years. as far as i can tell, this is the only set of these that he has listed as i did not see any other ever being sold by him.

eBay is full of sleazebags, on both sides of the transaction.
I recently had to open a case just to get a buyer to pay for his purchase, when he had gone past the time limit for payment. People are a$$#0les and eBay attracts them.

don't leave out the owners of ebay also.

really, ebay owns paypal and since you get dinged a percentage of the auction, you get dinged on the receiving of funds for that in addition to the percentage they now take out on shipping.

kind of irks me, but really, if you achieve your minimum or more, you really can't *****.

My dealer moves a lot of chrome. When I see he has lots of desirable stuff like special colored screwdriver's, special stuff that doesn't come around often I'll buy extra and once in awhile I'll list it on Ebay at a slight profit. I had a set of the new hard handles on feebay and I got two different people who emailed me telling me they could buy them from Snap-on online cheaper.
I told them good luck with that they are out of stock and have been awhile. Dealers were all out of the green ones and that's what I listed. They cost me $99 each set plus another $8 in tax and I listed them for like $125 BIN. I wasn't making crazy money off the two sets I listed or anything. After ebay/paypal's cut I would make maybe $10 but these two losers both called me names and acted like I was screwing everyone on ebay. I just ignored them and sold them to other ebayers. Not my issue.
I got paid and gave the money to my dealer. He's happy, someone without a good dealer or no dealer is happy and money is changing hands.

My apologies if you thought I was calling all australians lazy and stupid. That wasn't my intent. My point was that there are people all over the world that fall for these high prices simply because of convenience and because they don't check what the retail of the items are. I kow a couple guys that have shipped Snappy stuff to Australia, Japan, europe, etc for the same price as someone in North america would expect to pay for it on Ebay. The shipping was a little higher but the total cost for the item was bearable. But the fact is, no matter how good of a deal you think you got on an item, there'll always be someone that will tell you that you got ripped off and that they got the same item for $3 at a pawn shop or swap meet. the trick is to get the best bang for your buck and there's a lot better bang for the buck to be had in many different places on the internet.
I never agreed that this guy was a scumbag. I simply stated (maybe worded it wrong) that his business seems to be based on people not doing their homework and not being aware that they're paying way more than they should for a given item. But, I suppose one could argue that buying from the tool truck or SO's website is the same. Anyways, those were the points I was trying to make. as I stated before, if he can get people to buy his goods for those prices, more power to him!

BTW I'm in Canada and we pay on average 10-15% more than the US people pay off the truck for a lot of items and i've never seen any such thing as a $99 deal on a set of prybars here either so I feel your pain on the high retail.

Hey now I'm not offended, no need to get defensive and hide your racist views against Australians:lol_hitti. When I visited canada, I actually had to pretend I was from New Zealand just to get a damn job. When I came out and admitted I was Australian the manager laughed and said I was the first Australian he had seen that did work.

Over here I'd say snap on prices are 20-30% above America. That might sound like alot, but its not too bad when a pair of Channellock linesmans pliers cost me over $60 and the knipex equivelant is $90-100.

really?? Maybe I lead a sheltered life as that's the first ive heard of Australians being thought of like that. Hell, I actually thought the opposite as in one of my past jobs before I left Newfoundland, there were 2 guys fresh off the boat from Sydney that worked harder than anyone on my crew and they didn't complain one bit. Never woulda thunk that an Aussie would have to lie about where he was from....shows ya what I know I guess! Lol

This is a pretty discussing thread to read. I personally sell lots of tools to Australia and worldwide. Sometimes I ask more than Snap On USA retail and guess what, 9 times out of 10 I get it.

I absolutely LOVE it when retarded Americans (Snap On price police I guess) e-mail me and tell me how much I should be charging for my tools. All I need to say is tell me the price if I bought this set in Australia. That is usually the last e-mail I ever get from them.

I don't understand why someone feels the need and takes the time to try and tell me what I should be asking for my tools. If you don't like it then get lost!

If that seller is smart he would click the button to decline all offers under $175. That saves him from having to deal with low ball offers from a$$ holes like the guys in this thread.

BTW I've sold at least 6 of those pry-bar sets for $200 plus shipping.
