The 914 Garage - A Work in Progress

I've lurked around a bit and figured it was about time that I share my garages with you. I live in a first ring suburb of Minneapolis where garage space is hard to come by so as a result I've been using some property my family owns as overflow.

As my family's collection of cars has been trimmed down in the past ten or so years our communal space has consisted primarily of my cars and I recently decided to subdivide the space so that we can free up rentable space. In doing so we went from roughly 3,000 square feet in total down to two spaces of 1,600 and 1,400 square feet respectively.

I was too busy working to snap a bunch of pics during the construction process, but I'll include what I have.

Fortunately it was pretty easy to divide the space up. We ended up adding a wall that runs perpindicular to another wall that enabled us to divide the space with minimal framing. After enlisting the help of a construction savvy buddy and the renting of a framing gun we had a wall up to divide the space.

With the new space perimeter roughed out, I proceeded to demo half of a wall to join the new and old space. It's amazing how quick you can tear things down...I wish the build process went as quickly. In the process I managed to only step on one rusty nail. Fortunately, I was up to date on my tetanus so after a brief stint of cussing I was back to work.

I then proceeded to sheet rock the new wall, which got a bit hairy at times. I'm not the most comfortable when it comes to heights and balancing a 4 x 8 sheet of sheetrock while balancing on scaffolding got me a bit sweaty. I was able to bang out the rock quickly, though, so it wasn't too bad. Once the rock was in place I insulated the wall, more so for sound reasons than temperature reasons, then added a vapor barrier. I then proceeded to move the shelves into place and anchored them to the wall. This part was easier said than done, since I moved them solo and they are roughly 12 feet high and 10 feet long apiece.

I now had my space fully sealed off and proceeeded to organize, gather items to by tossed/recycled and finally hung up some of the posters I did not previously have room for. This pretty much brings us to the pictures below. The space is now fully functional and I will be making small improvements over time. In the short term I will be taking delivery of a 4-post lift that I sort of fell into and it will go where the orange car currently sits. From then on I will focus efforts on the orange and blue cars pictured.

OK, here are a few pics from the construction phase. In the second picture you can see where the wall was that was torn down. I still need to remove the small wall section where the door is, but for some reason have not gotten around to it.

And here are pictures of the current status. There are still a number of things I would like to do, but at this point it is functional enough for me. I will post updates as things change.

Nice set of 914s there. If you don't mind me asking where did you get your flare work done! I have been getting the rears setup, I like your fronts, also looks like the work of John Kelly

Great Garages and really great cars...I have a '74 914 and have been restoring / rebuilding for a few years now. Getting closer although kids and family have a way of slowing progress. I have been lurking for ages reading about all of these great garages. Thanks for posting although my one car space really needs to expand after seeing yours. Great work on the walls!

Wow, who knew there were so many 914 fans on garage journal.

The flares were on the orange car when I bought it. Based on what others have said it seems they are HPH/Bontempi flares.

Thanks for the kind words. 914s are fun and the two cars definitely keep me busy. I'm rebuilding the engine in the orange car this winter and need to fix the longitudinals on the blue car as well.

I've had two 'teeners as well. Fun cars! I am in the various 914 forums with the same user name but since I don't own one now I haven't been on for a while...plus there was that whole forum splitting drama years ago :headscrat

Looking good, it's nice to have a dedicated space. Now, how are you going to paint the shop? I'm thinking you should do it theme-style.

Not sure if I'll end up painting the shop space. Three of the walls are steel with only one rocked wall. I have enough racing posters I've accumulated that I'll probably cover the ugly yellow steel walls with them.

Great looking 914's.....the orange one looks like a 914/6 with those flared fenders.......

I have to ask what the story is with the E30 I see sitting in the back ground, which appears to have a full cage.....Is that a lemons car perhaps ?? :bounce:

The orange car is a -6 conversion and has been a race car since 1972. The blue 914 is actually a factory 914-6.

The BMW is a car I built up with some buddies for Chumpcar, which is the same concept as lemons. It's fun racing that is really competitive and relatively cheap.

Awesome, I grew up in the PCA world(mainly Road America), my dad has a '70 911T and used to own a 356 too.

Wow! Nice fleet of vehicles!

I think I remember seeing your race car on TAG's website as well.

I'm a lurker on here who is using this site to help me get my garage in order so I can then focus on putting back together the 914 I took apart.

I'm up in Hugo, so hopefully I'll see the blue -6 out and about come spring!

Great paddock of cars you've got there! I've always liked the 914. I'll never forget the one a guy at a place I worked at once upon time. He had a Chevy 305 stuffed in there. You'd never know by looking at it until you looked through the air vent. Needless to say it was very fast and hard to handle. I'm in the Twin Cities too, so for all I know you've seen that car. I can't remember the guy's name to save my life, though.
