I've lurked around a bit and figured it was about time that I share my garages with you. I live in a first ring suburb of Minneapolis where garage space is hard to come by so as a result I've been using some property my family owns as overflow.
As my family's collection of cars has been trimmed down in the past ten or so years our communal space has consisted primarily of my cars and I recently decided to subdivide the space so that we can free up rentable space. In doing so we went from roughly 3,000 square feet in total down to two spaces of 1,600 and 1,400 square feet respectively.
I was too busy working to snap a bunch of pics during the construction process, but I'll include what I have.
Fortunately it was pretty easy to divide the space up. We ended up adding a wall that runs perpindicular to another wall that enabled us to divide the space with minimal framing. After enlisting the help of a construction savvy buddy and the renting of a framing gun we had a wall up to divide the space.
With the new space perimeter roughed out, I proceeded to demo half of a wall to join the new and old space. It's amazing how quick you can tear things down...I wish the build process went as quickly. In the process I managed to only step on one rusty nail. Fortunately, I was up to date on my tetanus so after a brief stint of cussing I was back to work.
I then proceeded to sheet rock the new wall, which got a bit hairy at times. I'm not the most comfortable when it comes to heights and balancing a 4 x 8 sheet of sheetrock while balancing on scaffolding got me a bit sweaty. I was able to bang out the rock quickly, though, so it wasn't too bad. Once the rock was in place I insulated the wall, more so for sound reasons than temperature reasons, then added a vapor barrier. I then proceeded to move the shelves into place and anchored them to the wall. This part was easier said than done, since I moved them solo and they are roughly 12 feet high and 10 feet long apiece.
I now had my space fully sealed off and proceeeded to organize, gather items to by tossed/recycled and finally hung up some of the posters I did not previously have room for. This pretty much brings us to the pictures below. The space is now fully functional and I will be making small improvements over time. In the short term I will be taking delivery of a 4-post lift that I sort of fell into and it will go where the orange car currently sits. From then on I will focus efforts on the orange and blue cars pictured.
