Back in the day I used to use a product from McKay's. It came in 1 gallon and 5 gallon buckets. The stuff was great and always did its job but because of the the EPA or someone else, the stuff is no longer available. I have tried the stuff from Berryman's, this stuff don't work for ****. In fact I soaked a Holly 3310 carburetor about a week ago for 24 hours and it came out of the dip the same way it went in.

Anyways, I was wondering what you guys use for carburetor dip nowadays and what would be a good replacement for the McKay's brand that is no longer available?

I have heard of people soaking motorcycle carbs in pine-sol. The before and after pictures look pretty convincing. However, I have no first hand expeirence.

Find a Yamaha motorcycle shop and get the Yamaha carb cleaner. used warm (outside and an old crock pot on low - thrift store or yard sale? ) and it works wonders...

i used the gunk brand 1 gal to bring back some RD350 carbs that had been sitting with varnish for decades. It worked really well and made the carb bodies like new.... after a week and a half. Seems to be a running theme with the new formulas, just needs time.

what packaging does that Yamaha carburetor cleaner come in, the crock pot sounds like a good idea as well.

I'm not sure if it is a California thing caused by CARB but I have not seen the Gunk brand on any shelves in California or LA County should I say. There was a brand from stalube that was available at one time and it worked pretty well to. It was not as good as the McKay brand but is still a lot better than that Berryman brand that they have out now.

I can't believe Berryman Chem-Dip didn't work for you. Did you give it any brushing & let it sit again? It used to have little gold flakes in it - maybe it was too settled and needed agitated slightly first?

Chem-Dip has been a last resort for me, because even with nitrile gloves, my fingers still pick up that smell for a day or two - wifey can't tolerate it.

I have also used Gumout spray carb cleaner directly on parts and brushed it good.

EDIT: Just noticed you're in California - Berryman has a different blend for you dudes that I'm ASSuming isn't as potent as what we can get in Ohio.

The stuff I got was like cloudy water and had almost no sent to it. After 24 hours of soaking, I did a pressure rinse and then a re-soak and it still came out like ****. I am guessing it is another one of those California air resource Board or knowen as "CARB" issues.

So did your teacher learn something that day? That's why you use gloves and it comes with a basket so you don't put your hands in it. It's not the products fault but the users fault:dunno:

Sounds like the teacher got schooled on high school chemistry.

Chem Dip. Overnight.

like stated in my original post, I guess the Berryman chem dip we have here in California is not that good. I was very disappointed on how it worked and I am looking for good alternatives. I remember when the Berryman dip was good and that was about 25 years ago. I had a 5 gallon can back then and it did work well. The stuff I bought a year ago which is the Berryman product did not work anywhere near as well as it used to.

I have used Berrymans for years, and live in california. I ran out last week, and picked up a new can - the one with the dipping tray. It was junk, nothing like the original stuff. Urinating on the parts would have had a better effect. But... it will not harm the endangered Egret, kids can safely drink it, and is safe to pour down the toilet. Thanks California!

I did a little poking around on the Pine-Sol idea. Apparently it looks pretty good but it has some negatives regarding certain plating and brass parts. One complaint from someone was it took the plating off the throttle shafts. Others have had no troubles at all. Apparently they mix 2 to 1 and a soak time of 24 hours.

does the PineSol have any negative effects on aluminum? Do you run straight or do you mix it down?

I tried it twice and everything looked new both times. Once was with an old Norton motorcycle, and the other was with one of my KTM's. I am yet to try it on auto stuff thats zinc plated like a lot of the holley 4150's, but so far so good with it. I had it and never anticipated it working. I was so wrong. Some people mix, some don't. I tend to mix it with a little hot water, but not water it down too much. If I didn't try it my self I would not have beleived it.

I will also add the yamaha stuff works just fine too. I always used it until I discovered the pinesol trick. Next 4 carb motorcycle I do I might do 2 in pinesol and 2 in the yamaha stuff and take pictures to show people.

that would be a really good test. The Yamaha stuff is about $12 which makes the Pine-Sol idea appealing. Unfortunately now, I do not have any junk Holley carburetor's around to test the effects of Pine-Sol on it. I am sure the Yamaha cleaner is formulated to protect the metal parts so there is less risk in damaging anything.

i use berrymans pro chem dip. at work, but its aged this new stuff seems to get better with age. the the stuff from years ago worked wonders, things have changed and its not as potent as it used to be.

i have a 1 gallon can i use at home for small stuff, it works but i soak it for a few days. i check it everyday to make sure nothing wrong. i dont' have to let it soak that long i just do so i can be sure it is clean.

yes it is true the two formulas are different.

what kind of carbs are we talking about dipping? aluminum or an old cast iron carb?

since pine sol is not that expensive can you start with a diluted recipe then gradually make it more and more closer to straight?

i have a agitating parts washer project i haven't completed yet but i need to know what i am going to use as the fluid inside it

I have a one gallon ultrasonic cleaner that I use Simple Green in, and that may be another candidate; SG is a really good solvent, and will even remove certain paints.

I haven't yet used the ultra sonic on a carb, but that could change here shortly, my generators needs a crab cleanup... I know other guys that ahve had good luck with US cleaners also.

Lastly RangerDale, what are you trying to remove? Gas Varnish? if so, try a soak in MEK... (keep it covered and NO heat...)

We do not have MEK in California unfortunately, It is some kind of green **** that takes the place of MEK. I know it is another CARB restriction from Sacramento:headscrat
