Harbor Freight (97964) 2.5hp stalls on rough road. Cut/disconnected Low Oil Sensor....didn't solve problem. Should I take carb apart (scary) or just buy new one. Any other advice would be appreciated. I'm lost.

I'm not familiar with these things but does it struggle and then stall out or it just runs fine and then stalls ? It doesn't do this any other time besides rough road?

2.5Hp gasoline internal combustion engine. Old fuel in tank? Ethanol fuel does not sit in tanks well.

Thanks...Mostly just stalls after riding on rough road. I just bought this thing; 3 wheel motorized used bike/trike. I don't believe it even had a problem at all until I took of tank and hoses, drained, pulled plug for new one, etc., to give it a bit of a clean-up....not sure though because I hadn't ridden it much after buying because it looked like it needed a little TLC.

Anyway, like I said, I drained gas tank, cleaned it as best as possible, put in new fuel w/stabilizer, changed oil, new plug and fuel lines. I fixed leaky fuel tank, degreased engine, ordered new tank, which will take forever to arrive... so I put back together and started her up (she fired pretty quick a few pulls), And as soon as I started riding, it stalled. It would start up again failrly easily and time between stalling got longer, so I thought it was may some old fuel trying to work it's way out or something like that.

Then I heard about the low oil sensor gizmo that had given other people problems (the sensor activating engine shut-down on rough roads and turns), so I disconnected that, to no avail....

So, now I'm thinking of getting a new carb from Harbor. That'll take forever though and I'm not even sure if that's the prob.

Do you all know of anywhere else that carries carbs and parts for these small 2.5hp engines. Harbor does NOT make these anymore, even though they do sell parts (that take forever to arrive). I guess these are 'clones' of Honda engines, but I've yet to find somewhere that carries parts (other than their non-technically supported 800 parts line).

Thanks

I worked on my brothers ATV a while ago, and it was stalling anytime you tried to get it to go anywhere. Well it turns out that he had it sitting outside for a few months with fuel in it, and all that gunked up the carb. I messed with it for a while doing all the simple work to it (change the plug, air filter, fuel filter etc.) Well long story short there was never any improvement until I took the carb out and gave it a very thorough cleaning. I tore it apart and used torch cleaning tips to clean all the passages. Ever since then its been hauling tons and tons of firewood from the woods. Save yourself the time and money and its worth cleaning the carb out before you try to buy one. Its normally pretty simple to do if you can find the specs for the low speed needles etc.

It's a honda clone so I imagine if you were to purchase a newer honda carb your issues would go away.

We have a 7.5 HP clone that we run on one of our go karts.

It's from Harbor Freight. What do you expect? NOTHING in that shithole store is built to last.

I would run a little seafoam through it first and see if it doesn't clear up. Next time, be sure to add some fuel stabilizer to the tank if it's going to be sitting for a while.

Then you'd be surprised to learn that the kart people love the clone engines and run the hell out of them. They apparently get real good service from many of the motors. They just don't try to buy parts from Honda because Honda will hang up on them.

To the OP - take your carb to a commercal mower shop and see if they can match up the carb to some parts. Have the same issue on my grandson's 96cc minibike. It's a Honda knockoff built by Hello Kitty Heavy Industrial, and there is no kit of any kind. The guy I know that runs the shop I use for parts said to take it apart and clean it. If something breaks or is screwed up, bring it and they'll try to match it up. The send off was "Good luck!".
