Came across this for sale locally, a Studebaker hydraulic vise, apparently used in conjunction with a foot pump to supply hydraulic oil. Supposedly like new, in storage for 50 years, asking $200

Post 2873 shows mine.
I've done some research on these... no relation to the Studebaker car company.
Mine has the foot pump and the steel line... I'm going to replace the steel line with rubber soon, I think. In the original literature it shows a 1-pc line with a loop in it... mine has a union in the middle of it.
I know the loop was to act as a spring of sorts, to give the hard line some flex when the foot pedals moved around a little on the floor--same principal as the coil on a car's brake line where it goes into the master cylinder. No flexible area, the line will crack from vibration and repetitive movement.

I paid $80 for mine, it's also in like-new condition, but I got a really good deal compared to the other couple I've seen for sale.
Two I've seen for sale had broken and repaired foot pedals, at the pivot points, so keep an eye out for that.

I mounted mine horizontally, on it's side, at the end of my welding table, bolted to the legs. this puts the jaws in a vertical orientation.
I did it just because I had the vise, and thought I might use it some time, if there was something my big 93 pound Reed wasn't holding comfortably. But it was really more a case of "well, I've got it, so at least ACT like it's functional."
It's been mounted for about 5 months, but the hydraulics aren't hooked up. As it turns out, there have been several times where I really wish it was hooked up, because the vise, mounted that way, was exactly the way I needed to hold something while I worked on it.

...well I skimmed through some pages, but not all 200+ pages and didn't see one like mine. Here are mine:

Yost 33C Machinist vise - bought from some guy that formerly did contract work for the govt. for $100
Jorgensen woodworking vise

First proper post after the introductions thing.

I got to thinking whilst at work today and I realised how many vices we had there, so since no-one else was around to hinder me, I got the phone out and got snapping.

Welcome to England, where I hope you like music 'cause I've got a whole load of 'Records' to play for you.
Ok bad jokes over, onward!

First up, cause its mounted to my bench, battered Record Number 4.
RecordNo4.jpg

Someone elses bench containing a Record Number 23
Record23.jpg

Two spare Record 23's under the lathe (plus spare anvil :p)
RandomRecord23s.jpg

Big chunk of Record Number 112:
Record112.jpg

A good sized leg vice (un-marked, I did look for branding but saw none)
BiggerLegVice.jpg

And a slightly smaller leg vice (again no makers mark). Second Record 112 in background on the bench:
SmallerLegVice.jpg

And a funky little (well about 14" from jaws to hinge) clamp on (no marks either)
MiscClampVice.jpg

And just for giggles, a big chunky G-clamp with tommy bar holes. Probably about 16", maybe 12" between clamping surfaces.
RandomGclamp.jpg

There's another leg vice under one of the benches, but I couldn't be bothered digging that out, I think thats also unmarked.

Thanks for reading :)

Nice vices! so many Records I thought maybe you were across the pond, but the Smithing stuff seems American? :dunno:

I agree, cool looking shop! Is it a Quonset hut with bricked in ends?

The web on the rear should be rounded. You can see the rough break. Doubt Prentiss would have sold it like that.

He might be talking about picture 9. The ear that goes down to the back holddown.....the left one looks like it might have been altered or added.

I agree 2000 is pretty steep but the guy probably just had to have it! I missed the broken piece, good eyes. I picked up the same model 58 last Nov at a sale. It is a big vise but a reed 208 would be a better choice. Gj member Joepickens has a newer version that weighs in at 305#. That is what I thought I was buyig when I got this one. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=542494&postcount=33 Here is the link
This blck one is the one I picked up.

Where on earth did you take the third picture? I need to go to that place and buy every vise on the shelves:lol_hitti

I would love to have another huge Prentiss vise but i wouldn't want to deal with the hassle and cost of shipping such a huge chunk of metal across the US

This is my 1946 Wilton 4 1/2". My dad used this vise in the shop he worked at for 37 years. I talked the shop owner into selling it to me as my dad passed away in 2009. I refurbished it and all that is left to do is attach it to my bench.

The vises in the background are some of my other big ones. I have 23 big 8" and 9" vises now. I will try to get a photo of all them. I posted a pic last fall but there were only about 15 then. I have a nice prentiss 8", rear swivel jaw coming in this week. I have never seen another. I will post pics tomorrow.

Nice vise and bench top! Great to see you got your dads vise. I have my grandfathers vise and I can still see him using it every time I use it now.

I picked this from scraps at work a few years ago. They were throwing it away because one of the 4 mounts broke off. I'm going to refurbish it in a few weeks.

I posted this little Miller's Malls vise many moons back in this thread:

attachment.php

My son and I finally got it cleaned up and refurbed for use as a modeling vise. His masking job wasn't perfect, but He's reasonably happy with the result.

Originally it came with a table clamp and would swivel. He is now deciding what he wants for a base. A chunk of metal? A block of wood? either with felt on the bottom would probably do for his use. Or he could go with a square plate and 4 bolt holes. He cut a bolt shank for the vise to swivel on, and that will go into whatever base he decides on.

Here's one for the vise thread. A Prentiss Bulldog 264/265. I guess it was when Parker was making some of their parts. I never saw a Parker lock down on a Prentiss and also the # 974 in underneath the base. By the way, its in the Classifieds.
