I am doing a 62 unibody currently but this tread is awesome. The ecoboost is an amazing engine and putting it in a slick is great.

This is amazing. I'm learning a hell of a lot just from your thread. I had a custom S10 that I slammed about 10 years ago (working with my Dad) but that's nothing compared to what you're undertaking.

This is awesome. You have some skill! Subscribed!

Wow!!! I am impressed and I am subscribed. If I were closer I'd be over to help you out all I could. It sure looks like it's going to be a fantastic project.

Patiently waiting for future updates :willy_nil

In for the long haul!!! Keep up the good work!!

Fantastic build! Thanks for making a thread for it. I admire your workmanship and your perseverance......lots of obstacles in what you are trying to do, and you aren't giving up. Keep on doing & posting.

Awesome. Subscribed

Wow! What a response . . Thanks to all for your interest.

I will try not to disappoint. I was a little hesitant to post this build here not knowing how it would blow over.

Just got a call from friends stuck in Flagstaff that had a sparkplug blow out on a 5.4L F150 so gotta do a rescue.

More after a bit.

Very interesting project! I have a '66 F-100 myself, and while I like it a lot they were pretty primitive compared to today's trucks. It will be interesting to see if you can get everything to fit - space inside the cab looks like it will be at a premium with the late model dash installed.

Considering that the factory HVAC seems to be the major obstacle...

Is configuring the required OEM '11 electronics into the '66 dash and then adding a Vintage Air AC unit out of the question?

I was without a shop for nearly a year... Just trying to make up for it I guess.

I am really torn between this project and the one not quite completed yet.
It was a near 40yr dream truck now this one seems to be taking over.

A bit of reading material for those with extra time . . . LOL:lol_hitti:thumbup:

I was just prepping to get back on this build when I had the silly notion to start the EcoBoosted project.

http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=595366

Wife said ok, you can buy the ecoboost but no buying parts unless you sell some of your STUFF!

I put my Semi Tractor (long story will tell later) up for grabs and it sold a day or less later

I then put my car hauler up for sale as will not need to haul projects home for a while.. LOL

It sold in a couple weeks time.

I am hoping I do not have to sell any of my old trucks to keep going.

I'm in. Awesome build. I'm a big fan of slicks. They are my favorite body style too. I've got a 90 F350 4x4 diesel that I would love to put a 65 or 66 body onto but it's so far down my list of projects that it will never happen.

It takes a lot of skill to do what your are doing. My hat's off to you sir.

Very neat project. Trying to use that Ecoboost engine and all the electronics is a major undertaking. Using the fiewall and floor of the donor with your old cab is a good idea, but a lot of work. Nice work so far, look forward to seeing more.

There is a guy over on Pro-touring.com doing a similar build with a '70's Torino and late model Cobra Mustang. Kicker is he is doing two builds, both the same. Search for twintorino.

It is still unknown exactly how this is going to play out with wipers, HVAC and so much more. Until I can actually get floor pan located along with firewall I am really just shooting in the dark here. Its just too difficult to try to measure or for me to exactly visualize how it will all work.

My brain is for sure on overload . . . A lot of excitement yet not knowing as there are no real plans. Its whatever fits together without spending Big$$.

I did flip the '11 dash over and it looks like I could remove a few things and tighten things up a bit and it possible but not too probable to get the '11 components into the 66 Dash.

A bunch of pre-fitting is in order. I do not have any type computer program to help me out either its all trial and error.

A very lofty goal I know but would hope to have it at SEMA this fall.

Ford dealer called and said some more parts came in.

In order to get the rear wheels centered in box wheelhouse I am now thinking to move the wheel opening so then I can just go to Ford and get a stock driveshaft and anything else down the road will be a bolt in and not a one off custom. Just little subtle tweaks here and there.

So when time allows this week hope to get the cab modified and set in place on chassis, locate firewall and see how it looks. I may tear apart the entire dash assy too just to see if I can get the components to fit in stock 66 dash. Once the firewall is in place and the FoMoCo HVAC is sitting in place I will have a better idea.

Initially I had hoped on moving the Eco Engine back in chassis a bunch but if I want some comforts of home it will not be possible.

This week should be very interesting indeed!

Is configuring the required OEM '11 electronics into the '66 dash and then adding a Vintage Air AC unit out of the question?

Actually with the install of '11 firewall the factory HVAC will be a 5 minute job to install. Its all plug and play using stock lines etc. The heater hoses are even plug and play with no clamps needed.

see post 56.

Vintage Air does not make a direct fit only universal for this truck. I would prefer the stock ford A/C unit and of course not having to spend a single dime vs 1500.00 for the Vintage Unit.

Its once the stock HVAC is in place trying to get the rest to fit.

With the truck having SYNC I can tell it what temp I wanted & would not be able to do that with the Vintage Unit.

In a big $$ World I would have built my own chassis and had a real plan. The big snag is with no standalone computer/harness avail I have to add things I would not have wanted. But once the weight is there it changed my tune to having a lot of creature comforts.

Time is also a biggie to get this going. I really want to finish my other project soon. Its just that once I got into this one I cannot stop . . . Too exciting to be able to retire my 7.3L truck and use this for my daily driver and tow rig.

My 1st time doing a sectioning like this but think it will work out well.

In order to get the proper clearance for the frame I had to widen the opening on back of cab.

Because I wanted a stock appearing opening I decided to just cut out a 3 1/4" piece out of back. Cutting left side first I could have saved a step by using the piece I cut out to add back to top to fill a gap. As the lower curvature is the same as top and did not realize that until after the cut. Using a basic cut-off wheel on a die grinder the cuts were made.

I had a cheap self leveling laser from when I painted stripes on the garage wall so used that to make everything square.

I have now gone from a 41" opening to a 47 1/2" opening with a few simple cuts. I will get this welded up then trial fit the cab to get my proper firewall and floor location. The '11 eco floor has also been cut to fit within the rockers of the '66 cab. Lets hope it works! LOL

A photo series of how I made these cuts. I am hoping to metal finish the back of cab so no bondo will be needed. Will see about that . . .

Edit: 2/19/13

All the file numbers are messed up so am just including all how I went about doing the mod to cab to fit new frame. A laser was used to get everything straight.

"I put my Semi Tractor (long story will tell later) up for grabs and it sold a day or less later"

I wanted to give a quickie explanation on this Semi Tractor.

A year ago I sold my house in Washington. The bid to move my stuff less cars was 38,000.00 to Phoenix. OUCH! Another 1500.00 per vehicle and I had 5 extra vehicles. No way I was going to spend that much $$ just to move.

I ended up trading my '92 Ford Plow truck, my John Deere lawn tractor and a 427 Ford engine for this semi & 53' Trailer. My total out of pocket cost was 1000.00 plus
1000.00 in fuel for the semi to get it here. I now sold the Semi Tractor for 6000.00 to recoup some of the $. Because I moved 3 times in a 8~9 month period the semi & trailer were invaluable as no loading, unloading and no storage charges.

Total amt to move would have been 45,500.00. In all I did it for about 10% of that or less. I do not even have a CDL, just a friend who drove it down for me. When I got here my rental allowed the semi out back for no charge.

I still have the Semi Trailer and will sell it once I get a garage built, its still packed full of stuff with no place to put it.

So the Semi Tractor was used for the single purpose of getting me here and to save $$ in doing so. Awesome truck and was a great experience and it allowed me to save $$ I did not have.

What moving company did plan to use? :headscrat Brinks armored service? :scared:

Perhaps you moved out of the Biltmore Estate? :spit:

That just to me sounds godly expensive. I don't even think I paid half that much for moving overseas with a 53' loaded container and all the way across the states into Canada on the west coast.

Welcome to Garage Journal!

Welcome to Phoenix! This is a great thread.

Thanks!

Remember I did not have the typical household stuff to move.

I had nearly 50,000 lbs of tools, equipment, engines, transmissions and other parts along with furniture from a 4300sq ft house and 3000 sq ft of garage & storage space.

Most places will try to get 1.00 per pound by the time its said and done. That did include packing and delivery along with unloading. Still, I moved for a fraction of the cost. It was nearly 1500 miles across country too.

If I would have rented Penske 24' Trucks x 7 that would have cost me approx 2,000.00 per truck. Truck rental 1300.00 each plus approx 900.00 each for fuel plus drivers, motels, food, airplane tickets etc.

Some people pay more than 38k to move across the country. Expensive? You bet!

When I got the Semi loaded I was overweight @ over 80,000lbs had to remove weight, sell some stuff... The semi got 7.1 MPG hauling 80k lbs @ 70+mph

LOL! :dunno::dunno::lol_hitti

Yup, Waaaaay too much "stuff". It was a major downsize as now the garage space is less than 1/3 what we had, 25% of the lot size and less than 50% of the house size.

One can collect a lot of stuff over a 35yr plus period. Now I am closer to 60 than 50. For sure slowed down a bunch at least I do not have to wonder what to do with the little extra time in the evenings.

I got rid of a lot of stuff to make the move.

Large house, large garage then sitting on rocker :rocker::rocker: looking out the window wishing I had a few bucks to do a project.

Major downsize now I can at least "tinker" a little.
Its nice to have just a fraction of the costs associated with a large place in a screwed up State. (sorry to those washingtonian's)

Really an awesome build!

The EcoBoost is a fantastic engine. I'm totally digging my 2011 SuperCrew FX4 Twin Turbo... I bought it as a second vehicle, for weekends, projects, dog trips, moto hauling, etc., but ended up never driving my 'primary', a VW Touareg V8, so I sold the Touareg and take the F150 everywhere now! Performance is fantastic, and I imagine your final build will be lighter than a factory F150 making it even better!

Might be "interesting" getting the engine control system completely happy... The PCU talks to so many other modules like transmission control, body control, ABS, instrument panel, etc. and who knows what kind of limp modes it might go into when it doesn't see expected results off the CAN-bus... Might need some help in the final stages from one of the tuners who has cracked the encrypted PCU to hack together a version that won't be as picky about what other modules are telling or not telling it...

Once I saw the pics in the other thread, I was hoping that you would start a build thread on this project. Keep up the good work, here at GJ and at home.

This made me chuckle you being over weight.

Can someone give me a T? For It instead of I? Good Catch!:lol:
Actually when I hopped out of truck at weigh station to see the weight the weighmaster said nah, its good. . .

Now into stripping paint mode on the cab so I can see if there are any real surprises hidden underneath. Once that is done I can tack the pieces back into place and check fit with frame.

Yeah thats going to be half the fun getting everything to talk to each other.
Not going to hold my breath for FoMoCo to make that standalone harness any longer.

Man you rock! I am very impressed with your ambitious project. You obviously know your way around body work. I'm hooked. I had a slick up 'till a few months ago. Just couldn't fit it in with my othe project, etc. It wasn't as nice as yours to start with. Good luck and keep 'em coming.

OK, you were already my hero with this project... but when I heard of all the jun- er, goodies you wanted to keep and your solution to the move, it made me wonder if I had a brother I didn't know about!

You are, as the kids say, the man! Rock on, bro:beer::rocker:
