yea, its cheap, but it does what its supposed to do, hold my expensive f*cking tools when im not using them :rocker: :D

Shoot, don't worry about the cheap price tag. You said in your video that you was using it until you got laid off a month ago. At this point, I'd say it's nice not having to pay interest on a more expensive box while being laid off. ;)

These are great boxes for the price. Ive added the 7 drawer side cabinet and the tall side locker to mine. Im just a dyi'er, but im in and out of the box all night for something. It puts the craftsmans boxes to shame and can give the new mechanic the $ to spend on higher quality tools. My chinesse box is filled with wiss, midwest, craftsman, a lil snap-on, eklind, vermont, dasco pro, lisle, sk, petersen, tons of channellock( i may need help with this addiction), estwing(another addiction), and a few other american tool companies. My Grandfather has a matco box about 15 yrs old which is in great shape and is a thicker gauge steel. Its a real nice box but he spent 4500 on it. I got 750$ in mine and couldnt be happier.

Cant get pics to upload but i left my badge on, some coal stickers (my previous job) cabelas n summit, eagles and diamond plate magnets on my box. Your box looks great add on to it the additions are great quality also.

Stole the rattle can idea from others on GJ. Thanks to whoever came up with that.

IMG_0004-4.jpg

Added a grab bar to avoid greasy prints on the lid and used a label maker for the drawers.

IMG_0012-1.jpg

Added a "Heartbeat of America" theme to break up the expanse of red inside the lid. That's it so far.

What are you guys doing to prep the surface to paint your boxes? Im planning on getting one and using the duplicolor "paint shop" paint and spraying it hugger orange.

Is that tool box with the heartbeat design on life support? You did a lot with the paint and grab bar. It's peobably one of the nicer HF boxes I've seen.

These are your boxes so if you want to remove the US General badge, paint it to look like a Craftsman box, or in one case above, affix CRAFTSMAN badges to it, knock yourself out. What I don't understand is why you feel the need to hide what it is, an HF box? :wtf:
The box is just a house for your tools. Aside from tool organization, it doesn't make you any money. There's nothing to be ashamed of is there? Hell someone here has a whole wall of these things. I do think the current gloss red looks better than the krinkle stuff but, that's just me. HF should offer it in Black.

Maybe someone can help me out. I missed out on the crinkle finish side boxes to match my bottom and top red crinkle finish setup. Now all that is available is gloss. Is there a way to mimic the crinkle finish? I am not going to try to match the red color. If I am able to make the gloss side boxes have a close match on the crinkle finish, im going to paint them, as well as what i already have, black. I figured it would be easier to make the sides look like the rest and paint them, than the other way around.

My local powder coated has thousands of colors and finishes available, i bet they could match something up. I dont think it would cost too much to have it done.

@ joshn569 & Fedwrench, thanks for the compliments.

What are you guys doing to prep the surface to paint your boxes?

Just wiped it down with 409. No primer, just two coats of black.

Right on, buy a seemingly decent box and spend the money on what goes in the box.

I got my HF on sale, used a 20% coupon, and sold my old Craftsman set for $175. Upgrading to this set was less than $450 out of pocket. I envy the guys that can throw ten grand at a toolbox, but I take some comfort in knowing how much I saved.

Ok, so what your saying is that it is something that can't be done at home without a powder coating system/machine. I wa hoping that there might be a type of spray that could mimic it. If there is not such a product I guess I'm going to have to start looking for a powder coater.

I have seen wrinkle coat in a can, I used it years back on some lawn furniture. Think Walmarts had it... here some red on a valve cover from amazon

I've used wrinkle coat in a spray can with great results. Not sure if it would be dead nuts to your existing color, but it mimics the finish spot on. Two different projects below. On the 1st pic, different lighting makes it look darker than it really is. Also in the 1st pic, I screwed up and put it on too heavy.

The one Snappy roll cab I own, I got with the badge off of it. It had no stickers or anything to adorn it besides its own paint. I liked the clean look without any gaudy stickers.

When I got the HF 5 drawer service cart I immediately took the badge off too.

when you take the badge of a us general and replace it with a snap on sticker it becomes a "Chinese Snap On" haha..

Not hiding anything. All my other boxes are Craftsman and I wanted them to match. I would be more inclined to hide the fact that I paid $10k for a toolbox (which I didn't).

Can someone take a sec and measure the front of the drawers for me?

added this pic again for reference

IMG_0004-4.jpg

Top box:

three on the upper left- 23 5/16" x 2 7/8"
lower left- 23 5/16" x 6"
three on the upper right- 13 3/16" x 2 7/8"
lower right- 13 3/16" x 6"

Bottom cabinet:

top drawer- 37 3/4"w x 4 13/16"h
five on the left- 23 5/16' x 3"
bottom left- 23 5/16" x 6"
five on the right- 13 3/16" x 3"
bottom right- 13 3/16" x 6"

As expected, there's some variation +/- 1/16" but you get the idea and as requested, those are the drawer fronts, not the drawers themselves.

I would think it basically says that he is not concerned about brand names and labels. He is more concerned about value in relationship to the products intended use.

Value? I've got plenty of Snap On boxes and they've been bought for a small fraction of what they cost new. And they're all built hell for stout. I know plenty about value.

Exactly. There's a huge disconnect there when you're proudly displaying your HF box with a Craftsman, or other make, badge. If you're proud of your HF box, you leave the logo on. :dunno:

every time you guys post a thread like this you make me want to buy 3 or 4 of these and then i have to remind myself i don't have any more space in my garage and the next tool boxes i get have to have more shallow drawers.... but i'm a bit envious in a strange way...

Here you go, but i left it so i could roll it out.

I really like the Black drawers, One question tho, are you just painting the fronts or then entire drawer? Pics would be great.
