I'm situated on about 30 acres in TX and part of it was the Hillsboro Speedway back in the 70's.:willy_nil We put goats on it now along with some old cars and of course the shop.:D Been working on tractors, combines, shredders, and a bunch of other impliments.:eyecrazy: You'll get used to cutting/shredding hay and bailing it. Been doing it for a "few" years now after all.:p Did the same for my uncle on 82+ acres in TN. Have some fun with it and remember you're helping to feed what feeds you.:rocker:

Wow. I finally finished reading all the posts in this thread. Well, at least all the ones so far. I have a hunch it's far from over. In the words of Churchill, "Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning".

Thomas, I have been using the internet since long before Al Gore invented it. In all these years I have never seen such an interesting thread, or one with so many people sharing information in such a good natured way with nary a cross word nor even a hint of negativity.

The restoration/renovation of the garage was a subject I could easily relate to. My daughter and I have been renovating her circa 1880 house for almost as long as you have been working on the garage. But you have gone way beyond a mere renovation. Your respect for the family and the memory of Mr Johnson is clear in every thing you have done, and the generosity and kindness you have shown by acts such as the gift of the Y manifold are nothing short of an inspiration for everyone reading these messages.

I look forward with anticipation to more.

Very respectfully, MikeC

I love the idea that having now built your original 5 acres to five-star standard you're now slowly sprawling across the countryside, bringing with you powder-coating and excellent carpentry. Are you going to remove the border between your two pieces of property?

You are like many of us. The volume of information on this thread often fills several pages. You missed the episode that begins around post 4848:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2256490&postcount=4848

Oh, I certainly didn't miss the trip to the bindery. I found it especially interesting since my wife and I are regular clients of one near us.

What I missed is the connection to "a model 17-B Beacon Ray with a proper conical thingy base".

Cheers,

I've been waiting ever since I did the last bindery post for someone to ask that question. Indeed, what is the connection with all that to the " model 17-B Beacon Ray with a proper conical thingy base". And the answer is......................................absolutely.......................nothing! If you've been up late nights trying to puzzle it out, sorry about that. I just wondered if anyone would catch it.

We're still friends here aren't we gang? :dunno:

I'm not sure how I feel about this. For one I did not catch the question about the connection. I've just been reading and enjoying this thread without even thinking about tricks and hidden meanings in some of the posts. I can't imagine what will be on the test.
Good stuff here all the time, thanks again for keeping it going.

I knew I was right about you Mike, you do fit in nicely here! I don't know how it evolved that way but we do have a great group here on this thread, family really. We're all good friends that just haven't met yet is all. About the only thing that could change that is when Chris finally posts her thread test here. Then it might get real ugly!

As I've mentioned I have finished some projects that I think everyone will find interesting but I haven't had the time to do a proper post on........yet. There's one in particular about an illuminated sign that took a couple of unexpected twists and turns that turned out especially well and I believe will be helpful to everyone. I've decided to wait until everything is completely done so I can do a post from start to finish. It's upcoming. ;)

Again a warm welcome Mike.

Not to worry realvc, there haven't been any other tricks or hidden meanings like Paul McCartney is dead and has been replaced with a look alike, that sort of thing. Go ahead and read and enjoy without stress except for that ding-dang test. I've been privy to a little of it and I told Chris she better post a study guide or you guys will be pounding on the door with torches and pitch forks. :scared:

I'm curious. Were there any portable wrench boxes or carry cases in the as-is garage, Thomas, and, if so, what material were they lined with, if identifiable, if anything, if you recall? Thanks.

Private Lugnutz the portable wrench boxes you refer to, do you mean just regular, portable tool boxes? There are a few.

This is the only one I've removed from the tool shed so far. It was just bare metal inside. The others are waiting patiently until I can work my way to them. I'll get them posted here when they're removed. Thank you for your interest.

Thanks PureSilver, I appreciate the encouragement. All I plan on doing to the hedge row is removing unwanted plants and bushes. The hedge trees...

...are my pride and joy.You never see a well maintained hedge row anymore. Those trees are approaching 100 years old, are as tough as it gets, provide wonderful shade and I love the gnarly look of them. Old trees for an old shop.

Night well spent, One of the best garages on here! Your work is amazing! I love the mix of old and new in the shop. Were only 2-3 hours away I believe.

Is this the signal to start bottling "eau de GJ" or to start building a spa/hotel based on a "fantasy garage" theme? I know you guys are all trying to help us pay off our little piece of heaven, but it sounds like more work to make my retirement more busy than it is now! Neighbors might not like all the traffic, either! (Joe - if you need a vacation, maybe I can convince Tom to let you camp out for a day or two in the shed while you help sort ( empty ?) all the stuff in there. )

Makes me think of those archeology vacations, where people go out to Montana and spend a couple weeks digging up dinosaur bones. :) You could set up a little side enterprise - GJ members will come and camp out in your new field, and spend their days sorting and cataloging items from the sheds.

TOOLS!!!! From the Tool Shed!!!! :willy_nil

You really need some qualuds (sp) or some sort of help Joe.:lol_hitti:p

You have to remember that Joe has been waiting for those tool shed pictures for a LONG time now...

Chris,
I'd be very afraid to make that deal with Joe. You might end up with a PERMANENT visitor.:shocking:

Joe,
Make sure you look for more parts for that TANK. That's a MUST HAVE...

I like this idea. I'm going see how far it is from where I live to the center of the universe.

Do you have a 120V 15 Amp recepticle on the shop? I'll need to hook the RV up to power.

Looks like I'm about 550 miles from the Center of the Universe. Do I need to bring my own flashlight, rags, degreaser and buckets or boxes to separate the treasures?
Will you allow a cot in the barn or a tent in the field next door? Can we get extra credit toward our test score just in case we might need some help with our grade?
Man oh man this sounds like it could be a happening like Woodstock.

As I recall, in post 666 if you read it backward it says Thomas is dead and Chris is doing all of this.

You never see Chris and Thomas in the same post... just sayin.

I missed the original Woodstock, went to the 25th anniversary event to see what all the hoopla was about....

I think this'll be even bigger and better.

Just saying.

I leave the country for just 3 days and when I come back, :willy_nil all this has been going on and then.................but wait a minute, this all sounds pretty cool now that I think about it. Shoot I've got a field now for all you campers with a terrific view, you guys could even help with the drag strip layout. Nothing like being on site to get another point of view. This really does have some merit .........hey Chris, we're gonna need all those portable showers after all. :D

onething, Tom's not dead and I'm certainly not doing all the work (not by any stretch of the imagination!). Just don't let it rain (like it did at Woodstock) for our picnic/car show tomorrow. I don't think the townspeople (or our nearby neighbors) would appreciate a camp out on the field. Though the idea does have some merit...

Have a great Memorial Day weekend!

I thought you were way out in the country. The recent aerial photos prove me wrong. The neighbors are really going to love the go cart track, the drag strip, the rock band amphitheater, the ***** and gun ranges, and the STOL landing strip.

Actually, raising hay is a profitable business. Good demand and not much risk. A friend does it on other peoples property. He does all the work and the property owner gets a cut. Their may be someone like that in your area.

In some urbanizing areas you can get a tax savings if you agree to keep a tract "green" for a specified number of years. If your new property is "enrolled" with the USDA you may be eligible for some of their programs. One fellow in our area gets "bird sanctuary" payments for letting his land go idle and grow up. Worth investigating.
