Re: what did you do in your garage today?

My side business continues to grow with repeat customers and referals. I believe there might be one or two customers who no longer go to the "main shop" to get their repairs and service performed....:dunno::lol_hitti Not my fault, they got the right to spend their money where they want

This past weekend, did a timing belt replacement and general maintenance/tune up on a 2001 Kia Rio. It had 149,000 miles on the original timing belt which should have been replaced at 60,000 mile intervals. The belt was stretching and throwing cam codes. And yes, this is an interference fit engine.

Oily plugs/top of s plugs due to failed cam cover gasket/tube seals. Drive belts were original and in bad shape.

Number one rule in side business: $CASH$ ONLY, no checks, no stamps, no funny money:thumbup:

Good for you on the side business. I know I have about six clients that bring everything to me from their lawnmowers and snowblowers to their daily drivers and their RVs/toys. It is really a good feeling to know that they trust you completely with everything.

I still have people call to price check or "cherry pick" if you will but I guess you will always have those kinds of people that cost matters more than quality. Oh well, take the good with the bad I guess.

Teardown of a L-134 Flathead Willys motor for my MB. I've been hapily surprised with this motor. I bought it off eBay from a seller in LA 3 years ago and now its time. The previous owner said 'it was a good motor, you could drop in & go..." I told myself 'it is a core...' that will need rebuilding.

The previous owner was right upon teardown and look-see. Only have to do the IRAN and fresh paint.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Today I attempted to press two pieces of 3/4" oak plywood for a countertop. I don't have enough clamps so decided to throw a bunch of heavy stuff on top. Still didn't work too well (noticed after I got home the wood is a tiny bit warped).

Long story short...going to make the counter out of one sheet and maybe attach a small strip under the front edge to make it look thicker. This is part of our budget bathroom facelift.

I've been really getting into doing stuff for instructables lately. So I've been making some easy, inexpensive stuff to help out around the garage. First I made my PVC Zip tie organizer

Then my Nut and Bolt thread/sizer

I made my own basin wrench because I could not get a purchased one to fit. Use the foot of a normal one, a rod and nut head on the other end. Looks like normal crowfoot wrench.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Had a wonderful idea of repainting the garage door. It's now a waiting on me to find someone to replace it, since it's twisted and warped after one minor crash and then it went straight to hell after that. I kinda did want to replace it in the beginning, but I'd rather not made scrap metal out of it.

Replaced the rusted out bumper support in my daughter's 01 Malibu so it can pass inspection next week.

Fired up a Tecumseh powered Craftsman push mower and a B&S powered Toro 1638HXL, neither of which have been started in upwards of a decade.

The HXL won't move on its own yet, research that right now.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I didn't actually do it in the garage ... I hauled them through the garage. I'd bought 12 Goodyear Eagle NASCAR stock car tires from a friend who delivered them to me at the Howie Lettow Memorial ASA race at the Milwaukee Mile about ten days ago. Had I think nine in the Suburban (captains chairs, don't fold down) and three in the HHR. Time to get them in the basement. Four a Cup/Nationwide rain tires (very heavy when on a set of wheels) and the other eight are four stickers and four scoffs. They are now stacked in a cool, dry place (basement) waiting to be mounted on the Heilig-Meyers Ford.

I took a chair out to the workshop to sit while I drained the oil out of my bike. Put my feet up on the lift while the oil was draining, and fell asleep for an hour.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Used the leftover plywood to put a top on a leftover kitchen cabinet in the garage. The piece wasn't quite deep enough for the cabinet so it is in two pieces. Not pretty but this will be a great light duty work bench. Going to throw a stain and some poly on it before use to help the top last a bit longer.

(Pardon the mess...this is part of my cleaning/organizing phase)

My condolences Lkdelta.

I took all the hardware off the garage door and sanded it down. Then I primed it and painted it. In between I adjusted the spring tension and upper hinges so that it closes nice and tight.

Cleaned up the RV, going camping next week :bounce:.

Still waiting for the new concrete to cure some more for my 2 post lift install in a couple weeks, so I finished cleaning up the columns and stood the one closest to the wall back up and spotted it where it will go.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I was looking thru the junk pile for metal to make a air tool rack when I found this old bed frame. 2 saw cuts, sanded, primed, blue rattle can, had to drill 2 screw holes to mount it. and Its done. I was thinking when I started about milling the slots on the front of the angle and then welding another piece of angle for the mount and offset, But This worked fine. I think I have a few more legs from the bed frames so I will be adding more at my other air drops.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Mostly ran in and out fetching tools while I worked on my hay balers outside. Brought the gear arm of the bale thrower in, cut the gear loose and re-welded it to avoid the two worn off teeth on one side. NLA from New Holland, and none that I could find on E-Bay or CL.

Brought in a belt extension from the round baler and crimped the splices into it with a special fixture in the vise.

By then it was time to quit, SSS and go to a birthday party for a 90 year old friend, then drop my 18 year old son off at the state police academy for a one week "introduction to law enforcement" camp. When we left he was being yelled at by a National Guard sergeant. "Line up here, move along quick, hurry it up." They told us we wouldn't recognize him when he came back.

Nice American coach. What year? Forty footer? Is it powered by the 8.3 ISC or 8.9 ISL?

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I was planning to go fishing a little this weekend, but this side job came in and of course, who can refuse some good old $CASH$ money....

2002 Ford F150, 4.2, 189,000 miles. Truck had been to a few shops with complaint of low power. A lot of parts thrown at it without success. I confirmed the low power/throttle response issue. Had MIL code for CMPShaft sensor synch.

Removed camshaft sensor and found magnet had fallen out into the synchronizer. I replaced both parts as the synchronizer is prone to bushing failure as evidence by chirping sound. Also, a loose magnet can bend the shaft and damage the vane blade.

Did a few other maintenance items while in the shop.

Truck now runs like a scared hound. Customer picked up 5 of my business cards and said he would be sending a lot of work my way very soon...:)

I guess the fishing on the weekends will have to wait.....:bounce:

Mike,
It's a 96 Tradition. Model 37TF. Bumper to Bumper it's 38 ft. It has the Cummins Mechanical 6CTA8.3 Liter 250 HP bumped up to ~325-350 HP with the Banks Stinger system. ISC & ISL engines are electronic but I love my mechanical engine. Easy to work on and less electronic **** to go wrong that I can't work on. No Slides but that's OK, they are just something else to malfunction.

First Mod I did was to install the outside flat-screen 27" LCD TV and 100 watt stereo system. We go to a few Nascar races every year and last few years we don't even go into the race. Just watch it on the TV and sit in a comfortable chair next to the beer cooler and grill.

Thanks. It actually looked larger than 37' but that is still not small. Our 40' Dynasty has the ISL and I really like the ISL, especially the dual stage compression brake (Jake Brake). I installed a Banks kit on my cousins' Country Coach with the ISC (2000 Allure) and it made a big difference.

Great job on the exterior television by the way.

Enjoy.

Mike.
