Grats Bigcaddy! That is a very square slide and nice jaws. You even got the later model with the split nut. Those are great to adjust freeplay along with the rear nut pin.

Theres a good chance thats what it was used for. The guy built sets for a living and i didn't see much relating to cars or machining in his garage. It was an average home use vise that saw very little wear

That's a steal - I also gave $50 for my big Reed / Craftsman vise and I was extremely happy with the buy...great deal!

Take a look at this Parker 107 vise in Alabame. Someone go get it. The guy will not ship so I can't do it. The jaws are 6" even though it says 107. It has a two piece fixed base. The lower piece appears to have the front jaw support built in to it. I spoke to the man on the phone and he sais he unbolted it from a bench so the piece was probably original. I have Never seen one like it if it is not simply just broken. Any ideas?

Man-- with a little oil, and a little filing to get the dings out of the slide....this old Craftsman is Smooooth :)

I had a NOS Wilton base that fits it pretty well (bolts are slightly tilted). I bought the base off ebay last year for $60 but it doesn't fit anything I own--if anybody needs it let me know(101199/101088/WF1).

Picked this up at an estate sale today, it was still bolted to the bench): Rock Island, 3" jaws, about 30 lbs, and other than chipped paint, in wonderful shape! Not a monster vise, but a great size for a tool box...

My new find from this weekend, an Eron 3". Looks like a record clone, picked it up for $5!

Great job! It looks beautiful! How did you finish the vise? Is that bare metal or is it painted? If so, what paint did you use?

-Chris

the paint is eastwood spray grey, this stuf is tougher than hell i have already pounded on with a dead blow with ni chipping i had some over spray and it was very hard to get off.. I highly recommed it . i am also going to try there break gray as well...

Thirty years ago Eron was considered to be a good quality vise. I guess they got squeezed out by the other asian manufacturers who used price (and low quality) to capture the retail market.

That's a name I haven't heard before - "Eron". Here's my Record No. 3 for comparison. No doubt they are related. And for $5 ... can't beat that.

Demoman - I will buy you a Coke to drive down to Alabama and buy that Parker. That vise reminds me of a carnival side show.....The Amazing Gorilla Girl. I am not sure if that Parker is "real" but I am curious enough to buy a ticket and look.

The Yost came out as nice as the vise stand. If I could weld like that, I wouldn't have to keep sucking up to those folks with that talent. LOL

Outlaws - thanks for that Craftsman vise thread. I saved it to Favorites since I just bought an older model. When I get a couple of photos of it, hopefully you can tell me what I have.

I like the Orange Wilton too. It is sort of like the safety yellow ones that they sell now in a different model. The Orange looks way cooler though. I am almost tempted to repaint my copper colored Wilton to match it. Maybe I should just buy another Wilton...yeah....that's my excuse.

How about another Prentiss vise? This one has no story behind it...maybe just a caution for those buying vises. If it has a painted slide, exercise some more inspection. I bought this one for about $.40 a pound so it is okay in my book. I even took photos of the slide before stripping it since it seemed very smooth. Somewhere along the way it got cracked and repaired. The repair is a very nice one and bonded well. It was missing the base wrench also. I took an "All Tools 75% Off....This Weekend Only" box end wrench and cut it to the proper size. A couple of weld tags on the backside keep it from sliding past the nut. This is probably one of the nicest designs for a swivel base lock. It really grips like Parker's Grizzly. LOL Too bad it came at the very tail end of Prentiss' business life.

I'll have to post pictures of mine, I got a 506-51810 from an estate sale this weekend. I don't think I saw a spot for a badge mount on mine though, the craftsman name is cast into it.
