A couple of weeks again I found a Craftsman DP on CL that a lady had at a yard sale. I called her to see if you still had it and how much. She said because to was "Vintage" I was asking $175.00 for it. I said I would come and look at it. So when I did I did not tell her who I was and it looked pretty sweet. So I asked her what is the lowest she would go. She told me again that because of it beling "Vintage" she was asking $175.00 but That I would take 75.00 for it. So I just paid no attention to her. When I walked away she yelled out ok how about 60.00 then I drove off. A couple hours later she called me and said are you going to come and look at it I am asking 60.00 for it. So I said well how about 40.00 so she said ok. at that point I hailed *** over there to get it. SCORE. and it works.

If anyone was a part number 18915 return spring the one on this is damaged. also This model 80 from the factory has no knobs on the feed handle. If anyone has 2 of them. I would pay you for them Thanks and I will post Pics soon. Chris.

Was it worth $75? I can see not paying $175, but if it is worth $75 I think I would have paid the lady that. To take advantage of a man is fun but I feel women should be handled with "kid gloves". Older ladies even more so.

Ya will I must say you are not me you don't work 6 days a week to make ends meat and have 6 kids and a wife to support and you don't live in a 3 bedroom duplex, and wish things could be better! I do not judge people and never have I also never take advantage of people "Carma's a *****". She was moving and no one was looking at it. she was just going to donate it. So I with what I know I can afford gave what I could afford......

I don't get it. They agreed to a price on an old power tool that was missing parts.

I just picked up a 1979 Craftsman drill press this past weekend from a older
(92) man who wanted it and a jointer to go some place they will be used. He wanted $100 for the drill press and $200 for the jointer. Took the drill press for $100 did not even try to get it cheaper.....talked with him about the jointer for a few minutes. Left and said I would call him back about it at the end of the week. Made it about 3 miles turned around and went back for the jointer. Both are 79 era stuff in great shape. He did give me a package deal and took $20 off the price of the jointer. Two great pieces of equipment for under $300.

We both felt good, I got some great tools, he got some cash and knows the tools are going to a location that they will be put to use.

Hey we both felt good about our transaction too. She told me it was her Grandfathers and that she hoped it would get good use. Ya I am planning on it. I am trying to restore it so it will last another 60 yrs.

Man, this is waaaaay off topic here. But I'm a little OCD anyways.
Your "Ya" is KILLING ME!
Comes across to me as YAHH. Kind of like a Yaks mating call.
Guess I'm used to seeing it as "Yeah"
Not cracking on "Ya" (You) but had let it out! 'Course some of us here in NC have some messed up speech ourselves. lol.
X2 on the pics and welcome to the board!

This is a perfect example of a pic being worth a 1000 words.

I don't go around with the intention of ripping off old ladies, but I pay what I want to pay. I'm not a charity. But showing up and playing yourself against yourself as two buyers is a little off the mark.

That's why I set prices with a 20% haggling margin and if I don't get that price, I won't sell to anyone. I flat tell people that I don't deal with low ballers.

However, $175 for that DP was insane. 40 was a steal if you can use it. I'd have left it there.

People are ruthless. It was a bit unethical, but so was the lady asking the outrageous price. In the end both parties settled on a price.

That DP isn't that bad and I see the adjustable table is flawless. As for the feed handles, you do see them for sale on eBay at times, but way overpriced. I'd just keep what it has and possibly fabricate something to fit on the ends.

actually it does look like its missing the adjustable surface table.

It looks like it's there, just outside the frame. In my local market, I think a model 80 in that condition would go for about that price, but like others have said, 'it doesn't feel right'. Personally I'd have just waited her out. If someone else were willing to pay $175 or even $100, so much the better for her. Opportunities come around, just keep your eyes open.

:+1:

I wish some people would be a tad more forgiving of new members who are just trying to share their find with the forum and help to save another vintage Craftsman press from the scrap heap. This one looks pretty good and for what the OP paid, it was a good deal for what should be a very nice press once it gets a few parts (which I'm trying to help with, PM sent).

Honestly, nobody beat up an old lady or kicked a dog, but you wouldn't know it from some of the responses. Both parties agreed on the price. Re-read the last sentence if it didn't sink in the first time. No one engages in trade that is not mutually beneficial, and I don't recall anyone else offering her more money either. :dunno:

Kudos to the OP for snagging a nice old press and trying to get it fixed up, and shame on the trolls who have nothing better to do than pick on a relatively new forum member sharing his find. :headshake

Thanks for all of the Positives! The lady was moving and she seemed to be in her 40's, no one was looking at the DP anyways. I am not a Mechanic by trade, my dad taught me to rebuild things and to appreciate tools. I love to "Tinker" and build things. I built a Motorized Barstool a few years back and my kids love it. I am slowly gaining more and better tools such as this. Thanks for all of your help Gatewaysysop!!!

Thanks for the pic, are you going to refurbish the drill press or leave it as is?

It must be a home made cover. I have never seen one before and it's very well made. I have already started to restore it. I polished all of the handles, and the grears, and found new bearings, and I tore into the motor. I can't decide on what color to paint the thing. I thought about a bright yellow, or Lincoln welder red, or a metalic blue. I am not sure.

I don't think I've ever seen a Craftsman labeled drill press that looks identical to my Dunlap; knobless two spoke feed handle, no depth stop, etc. Nice find! A diamond in the rough. Is that some kind of home made cover on top?

Nice score at $40, but not a penny more. Here's some background on your DP, looks like a 1949 "80" with the optional No. 33 Jacobs chuck on it:

There was a cast iron cover made to fit these but I've never seen any reference to it in Sears retail catalogs and only once 'in the wild'. It did have a Sears part number in the cast. I'm guessing Sears must have had an industrial catalog as well.

Glad to see another one getting restored.

Ya mine has the No 33 Jacobs Chuck on it. I am trying to see if I can heat up the return spring to unwind it a little. It looks like someone wound it up to tight, there are some spots where the spring loops are smaller and pinched. I don't know if I can heat it with out hurting it and then freeze it to temper it or not. I thought I could get a metal dowel the same I.D. and put the spring over the dowel and where the spring is smaller heat it up so I could get it to fit over the dowel to resize it? I don't know.....
