Since this thread has made it from the walls to the ceiling....

A local clothier went out of business with a one million square foot facility full of rivet racks. I purchased thirty six 4x8x8 racks for $67 each, thirty five for work and one for me.

I used the top shelf rails to mount it to the ceiling and only had to add four small notches to the rails to allow them to hang from the rivets on the top shelf.

These pictures were of the first one I put up, they are in my other home which has a second floor above the three car garage making the ceiling floor joists. One rack was enough material to make three of these.

i am trying to stop that pile of random notes and stuff on my benches so i drilled some holes in clothespins and nailed them up to a shelf. hopefully having this stuff hanging in my face will make me do something about it.

^ That's a nice solution, resourceful and inexpensive.

If you want to spend some more $$$ you can look for one of those strips that restaurants use to hold the order tickets.

Got tired of cans stacked 4 deep on shelving so I ran a couple of thin rattle can shelves along the wall so I can line them up side by side (or at least staggered when I run out of room).

Works great so far. Just 5" deep 3/4" ply on galvanized braces, had the pieces lying around. Nailed and glued on a thin 1/2" strip of 3/4" ply as well to give them a little lip so nothing can get bumped off.

...or put a frame around it with doors that are about 4" deep and put more rattle cans on the inside of the doors...

I used up the space next to the door railing to hang up all my bikes...

1" pipe in pipe hangars.

and steel rod with bent hooks perpendicular from each other for hanging the bikes.

Best thing is you can slide the rods on the pipe and put more bikes in a smaller area than fixed hooks in the wall...

How did you wall mount your welder? Mine weighs about 120 lbs. I didn't see your compressor mount?

Here is the original installation, misc angles welded up to suit. Might explain it a bit better, if not I can easily post pictures of the present installation (using those original brackets). Both locations used lag bolts screwed into 2 X 4 wall studs. Those in the last two shots, have been in place now for 20+ years.

This is the compressor shot I neglected to include the first time around.

This is my start on storage. Low\no budget.

Packing crates for lumber and scrap laying around the shop for the rattle can rack and the air tools racks.

I've started hanging stuff up on the walls, just to get it off the floor mainly. I'd like to get the ladder and trestles type stuff down some day, but the seats and gas tanks and things can stay up there as decoration.

I'm not a fan of open shelves a such as they just collect so much dust from my grinding and welding and woodworking and stuff. So I've built several large plywood cupboards for smaller stuff. Things are slowly getting sorted out and put away, just need to reduce my pack-ratting instincts....

But I do have tool boards behind the main bench for commonly used tools.

An extractor fan will go where the two concrete blocks are stood, eventually.

I've only been in this shop five months, and it's still in chaos really, so time will tell how it progresses.

When there is a flat piece of steel that goes under those big hydraulic punches. It punches out like half a tank and that is the leftover (scrap) material that usually gets recycled.

Paint some lines on that floor, 1', 2', 3', 4' etc from that wall, so you can measure earthquake strength by how far stuff gets tossed.

These are chrome wall racks that I got from a closed bakery. I was able to score three 8' units and four 6'. It is hard to tell in the picture, but the have an angled bracket that connects the chain to a top mounted 2x4. not bad for free!

totally! when it starts snowing i leave one outside every door. that way i dont have to carry them through the house and one is allways there when you need it. cuts down on the procrastinating too! no excuses the shovel is there, your there and so is the snow, might as well get some excercise. the plastic ones are for the wood decks and the metal is for the concrete.
good score on the racks! chrome or stainless? i love getting free material!

I was getting tired of the pile up of shoes as you enter our home from the garage. I needed a way to store shoes in the garage, but obviously needed to keep them close to the entry door. During my garage remodel I decided I was going to build a small entrance porch to make it easier to get into the house. During that time I came across a file cabinet that seemed to work perfectly in the spot I needed. Below are some pictures. The cabinet fits perfect in the area next to the door, the shelves are just deep enough for the shoes and I can adjust the height of the shelves as needed.

LOL.... I wasn't done putting all the shoes in when I took that picture. Like I said, the victory was short lived. I have a wife and two kids. All those spots went away quick.... and for some reason my shoes are no longer in the cabinet, but on the porch. Just when you think you've made enough spaces.... someone makes more shoes.

My storage cabinet for spray paints, cleaners, etc. Not as big as some that I've seen on GJ but it fits my space nicely. Built out of 2X4's, 1X4's, and a piece of clear lexan that is painted red on the inside.

The white spot in the center is the flash from my camera LOL

I have a bunch of decals and stickers and I wanted a place to stick 'em.
