Found a Prentiss Bulldog in nice shape on Craigslist for $50. Multiple emails and never a response. Typical of my Craiglslist experiences. Unmotivated bum sellers/buyers.

This isn't mine, but it may be if you guys tell me I'm an idiot for passing it up. 3 1/2" Wilton, saw it at an antique mall this morning for $75. The jaws were a little worn, but otherwise in decent shape.

You are an idiot... At the very least you could of tried to talk them down some... You could clean it up a little (don't even have to paint it) and resell it on ebay for a lot more...

Can't really talk down a dealer who isn't there. I'll pick it up tomorrow.I don't think there is too many people shopping for a vise at an antique mall.

Cleaned up the Taskmaster 5. Trying to sell it on CL and Etsy. I'm asking too much so that I have room for negotiation. I prefer a naked vise, but from my experience, color sells.

Nice Rock Island!! How much that set you back?

That's classified info on the Rock Island 577 cost. But I will tell you this. The Vise was not expensive for one that large, but the shipping hammered me.

I have almost completed the refurb. Two things were wrong. No handle in the rotation nut and the screws will have to be replaced on the jaws. Otherwise, a very good Large Vise.

Thank You for your interest.

You have an Athol Machine & Foundry Co. vise from 1890-1910, later purchased by the L.S. Starrett Co.

It is a fabulous vise that I would love to own or trade for.

Here is a recent find. A "Made in Japan" Craftsman with 6 in. jaws. (I am not sure I would have figured that out without the big metal "6" sign pinned to the jaw.) Hard to find any info about this. I cleaned surface rust from the slide but have not decided to do more. Almost as beefy as some of my old American iron and very well made. Castings are nicely done and the machining is great. Tight tolerances and very smooth after I removed the rust. It was about $.50 /lb.

I found this thread as I was trying to learn a little bit more about a Samson vise I picked up. Thanks to member posts and an old Sears Catalog ad, I know the vise I picked up is near 100 years old and probably fairly commonplace back in the day.

My no brand Chinese vise thread recently failed and instead of picking up something brand new, I felt a penchant for old US Steel. Yes the vise is not perfect, has a few grind marks etc but all that gives it character as far as I'm concerned.

Here's what I picked up:

vise_before_2.JPG

vise_before.JPG

The provenance of my Samson 5224 was a machine shop on a large farm in Wisconsin.

While I normally use Aircraft grade industrial paint stripper (e.g. Klean-Strip Aircraft Remover), I was curious to see how the oft mentioned and urban legend of oven cleaner as a paint stripper and degreaser in one would work. What better way to test a paint stripper than to let it have a shot at 100 years worth of multiple paint layers. From good old lead based paint, primer, and rattle can layers - this vise had a bit of all.

Simple spray on application outdoors:

vise_oven_cleaner.JPG

I waited about an hour after the first application and hosed off the cleaner. Impressive results. The oven cleaner had cut all the layers of paint and showed bare metal in most places. The primer this vise had seemed to be the toughest to remove. Easy enough : spray it with oven cleaner and let it stand overnight. I hit it with the power washer in the morning and this is the result:

vise_post_oven_clnr.jpg

Pretty impressive for Oven Cleaner.
The paint, grease and even the resin drip - all gone.

Dropped the vise in Metal Rescue overnight and hit the jaws and anvil with a wire wheel real quick:

vise_metal_rescue1.JPG

Overall I was pretty impressed in how well the oven cleaner worked.

Not bad for $4.81. I'm always curious how the 'home remedies' hold up. I've boiled my RD's carbs in lemon juice and de-rusted tanks with toilet bowl cleaner as well. Generally the well discussed ones hold up nicely.

(Big fan of Metal Rescue btw - if you have not tried it, it is by far the best rust remover I have ever used. Paint safe as well)

As to the Samson, it's now my everyday small shop vise

Great board with awesome threads. My garage is nowhere near worthy but damn there is lots of inspiration here!

cheers

Here is a recent auction win. It is a Hollands 53 1/2. I think it weighs close to 80 lbs. It took some time in the electrolysis bath and a little persuasion to get everything apart. Everything is there except for 2 pipe jaws.

Nothing shabby about a Japanese Craftsman vise. I have a 4.5" that I bought new, nearly 30 years ago. I used it for industrial maintenance and it never failed.

I have its big brother, the 8" model.

You can check it out here. You can also find some "after" pics further down in that thread, namely here. Very well made, all things considered, and beastly even for a Columbian clone. Tips the scales around 120 lbs. if memory serves. They seem to be pretty rare. ;)

Think I'll be using oven cleaner on my old made in England Fortis, Record, Woden and Ajax vice's. I have a bit of a backlog to get caught up on...

Wire wheels are ok on the flat parts but never get right into the details.

Do you have a model number or anything for this vise? I have been looking for a Yost for some time but after seeing this one restored, I think I will be on the look out for one of these instead.

Went back and got that Wilton I posted above this morning. Lucky I waited since it went on sale for %20 off, bringing it to a whopping $60. Only issue is the cracked plate in the base. Hopefully it can be welded.

looks like a 014 or 013 1/2. The later ones has an inset square with all the mfg information and were labeled 930, 935, 940

It's a 015.
5 1/2 inch jaws
39 lbs / with swivel base

azcactus, very nicely done on the starrett

That's a beauty. I really like the color.

I was thinking the same. That color is a perfect fit.

Thank you.

OK, who bought the 2" Wilton in Baton Rouge for $20 today?!?!? I emailed the guy and by the time I got his message and returned the call, someone had already picked it up....

Did a little bead blasting, painting, polishing.
This is a coat of RustOleum self etching primer. Turns out its a dead ringer for the original paint. Think I'm going to clear coat it and call it a restoration...
