Went back and got that Wilton I posted above this morning. Lucky I waited since it went on sale for %20 off, bringing it to a whopping $60. Only issue is the cracked plate in the base. Hopefully it can be welded.

You can hopefully find a shop that can braise it, I think A_Pmech could do it if you ask him nicely. Otherwise you can probably still get the part from Wilton (don't know the cost, call them up though they are really friendly from what I have heard.) Autopts might even have some parts too...

$60 was definitely a deal, even with the broken part. You can still use it as a stationary base and sell off the other parts... ;)

I believe I'm just going to see what I can get a shop to do. Someone "repaired" it at some point and tapped holes to screw a small plate onto it. It holds, but I wouldn't want to crank down on it too much.

This is my Rock Island 577 that I worked on this weekend. Action is excellent on this large Vise. The flash on my camera distorted the orange paint and made it look lighter than it is. It is really the color of the Prentiss 22 in the background. I posted the 577 as I received it a few pages back. Enjoy!

Amazing what a little paint and polish will do... Looks sharp! I was about to give you a hard time for painting it T.U. Orange, but like you said the flash changed the color so I forgive ya...

I got a pretty good one this morning. It is a 6" #155 Ridgid 61 CPN combination vise. I think this is a Desmond Stephan made one? I know some of you guys have studied Ridgids, and my memory is not the best. Has anyone figured out who made which Ridgids when? Was Desnond first, then Columbian, then Peddinhaus? Any other Ridgid contracts?
I took one of the "steel slide" also, it is cast into the dynamic jaw.

Wow, nice find! I have a 33CPN (3-1/2"), amongst others.

The Ridgid's are very similar to the Desmond's, however there are differences, not only in the shapes, but also the weight. They are too inconsistent to simply be "relabeled" Desmond's IMHO... (But I could be wrong)...

Columbian's are their own breed, while they look similar on the outside, the insides are totally different. The castings are hollow (hence the lighter weights), the main screw is BIGGER, and the main screw nut is also totally different shape.

How much you pay, if you don't mind me asking?

Not too bad for 60 bucks and some spray paint...

A couple of mine:

I got the last one at a yard sale for $20. Anyone have any idea who made it?

My small collection. All columbian except the small one. I THINK it is a small wilton of a newer vintage. It has the recess on one side where it looks like the original badging would have gone. Right now it only says "made in usa" on one side.

That is what I thought, but I wasn't sure. When 4 of them in differing stages of decay show up on CL at one time, they aren't that "rare."

How does one remove the end cap off a Wilton Vise?

The ones I remove are not in that tight. Rounded broomstick is as good as any removal tool. May also need to gently pry the edge of the cap away from the end of the vise. I have read elsewhere in GJ that a freeze plug can be used to replace the end cap if it is too badly damaged.

Got this today. Heuer Front 100 and swivel base. Bought from norwegian dealer. NOK 1630 for the vise and NOK 468 for the swivel base.

Drop forged, 4.5 kg, 100 mm jaw width and 130 mm opening. The jaws are non-replaceable.

Neat looking vise, North!

I used my conversion chart, and saw that 100mm equals roughly four inches (yeah, I'm an ignorant old dinosaur )

But I don't know what NOK funds are like, compared to US dollars. Can you give us a hint of what that equals in US funds? Thanks!

As of this writing 1$ = NOK 5.75. So roughly $280 and $80 for vise and base.

I haven't mounted it yet but I can tell it is leaps and bounds ahead of my asian cheapo. Right now I needed something small, low and light weight but I'm still dreaming of some of those beautiful vises you have over yonder. Some day.

I have been watching this thread for a while and thought I would contribute with a couple of my vises.

My dad picked this up at a going out of business auction for me when I had to leave early. One of the guys at the shop said they had purchased it about a year ago and barely used it. I'm not sure on the model number but it's a 5" jaw wilton with pipe jaws. I brought it home for $225, I didn't think it was too bad of a deal. I am debating now on whether to try to get a piece of 1/2"-3/4" plate at work and making a bench for it out make a stand for it.

Excuse the mess, the vise is setting in a storage area of the shed right now.

After realizing that I liked wiltons, dad brought this box home from the flea market for me and asked if I would be interested in it for the $35 he bought it for.

Inside was a NIB wilton 063-2.5". This little vise is so cute I hate to use it, but I am getting ready to build a small workbench to mount it on and start breaking it in.

I think I came out pretty well on those two deals, but the one that still haunts me is a mint baby wilton bullet vise I passed on at the flea market for $50. Then when I realized how dumb I was and turned back to get it I saw a guy handing over the cash for it.

Both of those vises are in excellent shape and i love the C2. The second smaller Wilton is similar to one i just found but i think mine has 3" jaws. I was told it was made in Europe and not cheapo China. I want to say Czech Republic. Maybe the box will say where it came from.

Yeah, to the first guy, it says the model right on the side of the Wilton... "C2"... ;)

As for the other, it does look a lot like a York.... www.york.cz

I'm going see this old Wilton on Saturday. The guy says its solid, but... Are there any issues I should be looking for? I know Wiltons are reliable, but are the old ones prone to cracking anywhere? I may flip this one. I can see its missing a part, so I'll have to replace it.

The Wilton appears un abused so i highly doubt their would be any cracks and the handle looks straight so it probably never was used as a press.

Thanks. I don't have an expert eye for vises. I can you all you would ever want to know about cymbals, though. Not surprisingly, no one takes me up on that offer.

It looks like Chicago is written under Wilton. I'll have to contact him again to get the model number. Would that place it some time in the 40s?
