Rolling "bin" ??

So, after being in the shop for the past several weekends, wrenching on my Explorer, it's becoming evident that I need some kind of container or something for tools.

I've got toolboxes.

I've got a cart.

Those work great for certain jobs.

Not so much the work that keeps me on my back under my rig.

Does anyone make a low to the ground bin/box on wheels? Maybe something with 2" or 3" casters (all 4 swiveling) that's the size of the bottom tray on the average work cart?

After dinking around for the better part of a day, I find myself with a pile (or two, depending on if I was working on both sides) of tools that I just don't want to put away that evening. I come out the next day, start working again, and create another pile.

If I had some sort of bin that I could put everything in, it'd be a lot handier than having to get out from under one side of the truck, go over to the other side, dig through the pile over there, and go back to work.

It'd also save me losing stuff - instead of a pile to get strewn across the floor, it'd all be in one handy spot, waiting for me to clean them up and put them away.

Worse case scenario, I've got some scrap plywood, and I could go snag myself a cheap 2x4, buy some casters, and build my own. I still may, but was just curious if anyone knew of anything like I've poorly described.

Thanks, all!

What if you bought a bolt together work cart and just didn't bolt the uprights and upper trays to the bottom tray and casters?

Depending on durability required, you could make the same out of plywood and casters from the hardware store.

I would pick up one of these:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=97541
Then cut off the upright bars a few inches below the bottom of the top tray and attach the casters right there.

It looks like the casters just have friction mounts that go inside the upright bars, so knocking them out of the factory location and moving them up should be easy.

There ya go... $49 and you're done.

P.S. I havent looked at this in the store, so I make no guarantees my plan will work. I think I might just have to pick one of these up and try it now that I'm thinking about it.

I have seen several mechanics take a not too big top box and install casters under it. they then have a second set of basic tools they keep in it.

personally I have several creepers so I use one of those for the tools and one for me

That's pretty much the picture I've got in my head...

Meh, it's just going to be for chucking the stuff in, so it's not on the floor - something with some sides on it to contain various loose sockets or whatever, until I can clean stuff up and put it where it goes.

I may end up going this route...

I might very well go down that route - though, if I'm going to spend more than $20 on it, I'd prefer to not have to modify it.

I'm weird, and picky. :bounce:

How about getting a shallow plastic action packer, or storage tote and attaching small casters to it? You could also stick a plastic parts box (the larger delivery type) on a cheap movers dolly from harbor freight.
