Re: I love SnapOn tools ..BUT

I didn't pay anywhere near the online price for my SO stubby set off the local truck. Maybe the online prices are just jacked or my local guy knows that we won't pay those prices? I dunno???

Re: I love SnapOn tools ..BUT

Just a stupid question here from Denmark: Will the pro user pay the full price, or will he get a 30-50% discount? If I go to a proshop Hazet dealer a 13 mm spanner would be, say, $25. But the blue collar guy with an account gets a 40% discount.

In my opinion/experience a professional, by time they need the $1,000 stubby set, will have a significant purchase agreement discount. I very much doubt they would be paying the $1,000 fee. But, even at 50% off, $500 is too much for those wrenches to me.

Re: I love SnapOn tools ..BUT

I bought my first ever snap-on tool the other day based on another guys post. I bought the $61.95 ratcheting screw-driver.
This thing is awesome. I have been all over the house just looking for things to loosten & tighten.

Those are very nice. I ended up going with the williams version for about $30. It works the same, but doesn't have the knurling on the shaft. I remedied that by putting a piece of grip tape on it that can be easily removed or replaced if needed.

Both are great drivers.

I know the feeling! The problem is, soon you will end up with 6 of them in different colors.

PS, I went to school in Toledo!

Re: I love SnapOn tools ..BUT

$50 EACH for for 4" long wrenches?? REALLY!!!

I quite honestly have to wonder about the integrity of the Snap-On corporation and the truck salesmen that can, in good faith, sell these ridiculously overpriced tools to a new tech that's making $10-12-15/hr?? Plain and simple it's fiscally irresponsible even for a "pro".

Quite frankly, I consider these guys as bad as the predatory car sales outfits that sell cars to anyone stupid enough to walk onto their lot, OR the quickie cash loan places.

Plain and simple, they are preying on the new tech that's been convinced, mainly by peer pressure, that they have to spend stupid money on tools or they'll be forever labeled as hack mechanics.

Spend any time in farm country??
Ever see a Snap-on truck in front of a farm shop??
Ever wonder why not??
I can tell you why. It's because farmers are some of the most savvy businessmen you will ever know, they spend money where it needs to be spent, and they know value when they see it.

Farmers are also some of the best mechanics you'll find. The days of the hack farm mechanic are long past in successful operations, the stakes are far too high to not be doing the job right.
I've spent ALOT of time in farm shops, many of which rival serious commercial shops, but one thing you seldom find in a farm shop is Snap On tools. They just don't make sense.

There's no issue with integrity. No one is forcing the buyer to buy.

The SO business model is based on much more then the product:
- High quality product
- One stop shopping at the job site (no need to use personal time). Everyone places their own value on off time.
- Ease of warranty
- Financing

Unless the buyer can benefit from most of these factors then it's simply not a good value.

The only thing that has never made sense to me is - if the tool is needed to perform the job and the worker is paid so low... why are the tools not provided?

I work in a DOD contractor I cannot imagine telling our laborers they need to bring in their own $500 weller soldering irons, their own thousand dollar wire crimpers, their own ESD stations....

I hope snap on can survive. They can't be selling much these days. I don't have hardly any snap on stuff, it's just out of my price range for tools. But wouldn't it **** to not have them to think about!
Come on pro wrenchers, buy those tools!

Re: I love SnapOn tools ..BUT

I think the online prices are such as to encourage people to buy on the truck.
But years ago, there was no online,I don't think they even had telephone order "tools4U" until 1980 or so.

Agreed. But how much of a discount can a driver really give on the set?

I have seen route drivers prices be more than the website. Not much mind you but when you are buying a $100.00 ratchet a few more bucks can hurt. :)

Snap on is having some of their best years ever and their market share is growing over the other truck brands. Why is SO the number tool I am currently buying? Simple, only truck that will come to my door. Mac, matco and cornwell can't find the time to stop. Now I'm not a tool snob and own many other brands. I'm sure proto and armstrong are nice, but with no easy to deal with local dealers, I'm not buying them.

That is poor customer service right there, no way I would pay more than MSRP for anything.

Being cheap, I take an old usa made wrench and cut it to fit. I wouldn't pay that kind of money if I was a billionair.

Are you Sure? Im fairly certain its Somewhere in the Constitution that its Mandatory that you Buy Snap on Tools. Otherwise.. Why does everyone get worked up?

Too Easy...

I hope snap on can survive. They can't be selling much these days.

Someone hasn't been doing there Research...

Just curious but what kind of price would that set bring on the secondary market?

This is one of those Cases where i cant seen them going over 50% (Probably Much Less) of New Retail.. These have got to have such a small Market Niche and id be willing to bet they dont move many of those Master Sets.

I scoured Ebay for Completed listings and came up with Nothing on those "Master sets", About the Biggest comparision i could find was one of the Smaller 14 piece sets in Metric that had a MSRP of $450 and Sold for a $189 Shipped on ebay. Of Course Past Performance doesnt dictate Future Results but as i stated earlier, I cant see them bringing anywhere near Retail, Even New in the Box. Then again.. Who Knows? Maybe there is 2 guys refreshing Ebay every 30 seconds just waiting for someone to list that Master set, It only takes 2 and ive seen crazier **** on Ebay.

Re: I love SnapOn tools ..BUT

I have never understood the value of 'Snap On' tools. I guess if you have more money than sense OR want to impress your friends and colleags it would be fine but the value is just not there. Now don't get me wrong, they are great tools and I wish ALL my tools were Snap On and I drove a Rolls Royce but not practical for me. I will just stay with my lowly Craftsman Wrenches and continue to be the common person I am.

Maybe it is just Mechanics Jewelry.

Their value might be a bit deceptive to you, but others see it. For all the shock we hear on here about their pricing, their pricing can be very competitive for large industrial users. Additionally, much-albeit not all of their target market can't pick up tools from Wally World or other places like that. How many manufacturers do you know of whom make stubby sets to 1 3/8" at quality level suitable for industrial applications and can meet particular ANSI, ASME, and AS standards... The basic set of stubby wrenches most people pick up, is around $200 and that's fairly competitive with a lot of other vendors.

There's also nothing wrong with craftsmen wrenches, they're absolutely great for use around the home or even some professional work. They certainly are not suitable for a lot of industrial applications though nor do they always meet many of the more exacting standards that certain industries require.

Exactly what industries REQUIRE that you,or they, spend STUPID money for a set of simple hand tools??

I can guarantee that any large business buyer that spent that kind of money for a set of combinatioon wrenches wouldn't be working there very long unless they were SPECIFICALLY told to buy those tools.

You'll never convince me that Snap-On combination hand wrenches out perform others enough in any way, shape, or form to make them worth 5X+ what you can buy the same tool from anywhere else.

Who else besides Snap-on makes a 1-3/8'' stubby combination wrench?

I've been checking my catalogs and the largest I see is 1''.

Even for a professional mechanic, what would this set do that a Craftsman or Kobalt won't do? How much longer would it last compared to the other two brands? Would it cut down the time it takes to loosen a bolt?

Saying that pros buy truck brands because of the convenience of the truck coming to them, in this day and age when UPS delivers internet orders of other brands to your door all day, does not make sense to me.

I choose to spend my money differently.
