It just hit me how similar that ratchet handle is to the Snap on comfort grip.

I would have changed a few things, but because its an insurance claim they are strict on what I can buy... several things I wanted to upgrade and pay the difference... they would not allow it....
Odd. How can they do this? :headscrat

I ask, as I lost tools due to a car theft, and all they did was send a check minus the deductible. No statements/conditions as to what I could/couldn't do with the money, let alone state I couldn't buy upgraded tools if I wanted to (stuck with Craftsman as it did what I needed).

I just can't see how they can do this, even if the insurance filed is different (auto vs. homeowners I presume).

how it was explained to me is this... I have replacement cost on my contents... so initially I am only paid the actual value of the item at the time of the fire..(which they determine). so what ever the item is they depreciate it out and say you get X amount for it... if I don't replace it thats all I get... I have to replace it and provide receipts to get any additional amount... they are responsible for like kind and quality... which means no upgrading... I had a hard time wrapping my head around it...if I pay the dif what's the issue... but they would not budge... suppose I risk fraud if I return stuff and do it anyway... kinda ***** because my means and tastes have changed since I bought some of the stuff....

It still seems to me, that you can take the initial check they've given you (or will issue), add whatever additional funds for the upgraded tools you're after, and have done nothing wrong. *****, as you're out of pocket more than the deductible, but I can't see an ethical issue on your end. Then update the property list to reflect the new items if your ins. company requires one of these.

As per going through the hassle of getting as much as you can (fairer value for what was lost), then returning, and adding funds for upgrades, that's up to you.

Personally, I don't see how their computing depreciation in this instance is ethical (it's not a car, and I'm not aware of an independent pricing agency such as Kelly for tools). So I'd at least consider your latter idea if I were in your situation.

I couldn't pass up the $125 Tooltopia deal on SK impact universals with free 3/8 impacts and gloves.

Nice sockets but the blow mold case blows, every time you open it the sockets are scrambled, no worries, wasn't planning on using the box anyway.

I needed a set of picks so thought I'd try these Mayhew's they had slightly discounted for $32.

These things are sweet, great weight and balance.

SK Hand Tool (SKT33351B) $124.99 USD
Mayhew Tools (MAY60000) $32.38 USD

Whoa, sorry for the huge pics.

by my figures I had about 18 thousand dollars of damage to the structure and almost 30 thousand in contents... I got a check for roughly 13 thousand for the contents... I only get additional funds after I turn in a receipt for the purchased replacement... the first item I went to replace was my two yr old stihl fs90r weed eater... I asked if it would be ok to buy the convertible power head model that you can change attachments on...maybe a hundred bucks more... I was told no.. I said no, you don't understand... I will pay any difference in cost... still no...

don't get me started on the "car related items" they are not covered at all. My son and i drag race and luckly or cars were not inside... but we both had built engines on stands and numerous other parts ruined... carbs, turbo... etc..lots of plastic puddles that used to be somthing... not covered at all... likely another 10 thousand+... my beer consumption has been on the rise during this... oh and my laptop died two weeks ago so this is realfun doing on a phone...FML...

Only 43% of what the contents are worth... Ouch! :(

Can't blame you for trying to go through the hassle associated with sending in receipts for equivalents. Based on this, having to return things after they've been cleared/amended by the ins. co, then add additional funds for upgraded models will be your only option to keep the out of pocket expenses to the smallest amount possible, assuming you do pursue any upgrades.

Whatever you decide, I hope getting this mess resolved completely goes as smoothly as possible.

Good to hear its super bright, I've been on the fence about getting that set too. How's the free LED Dualite? Is that bright/good at all?

Thanks

Those Dual Lite's kick ***.

Used daily for me for 5 years so far in light mfr. setting and I have three. The two unused ones I keep at home as backups and for light duty there until needed.

$40 or so from my S-O dealer for each.

Best and most trusty light I have owned for the price.

Comes with 12v car and 110v chargers. I have no qualms with buying another one or two.

Think the FHX80 is going back. I had one before, wasnt crazy about it. Only reason i purchased a new one was the picture showed a moved directional switch nearer to the handle which i liked a lot (thinking about moving the head position while the ratchet was still on the bolt). Maybe someone just photoshopped it on in the wrong place of an FHLF80 as the length doesnt even look right for an FHX80.

They have changed the locking flex switch from plastic to metal though. Still plastic on the 72. No USAs.

Tool Monger, Very sorry to read about the fire and loss of you and the boys tools & engines ect. I have a insurance company that does me the same way, they didn't pay me over $4000 because I didn't have the extra at the time to use. Plus the $1000 deductible, I will change to State Farm soon and that will fix my wagon and break theirs!
