I'm at a real dilemma here. I'm in the middle of rearranging my house and I got a bunch of computer parts, various electronic gear and various knick knacks that just can't be organized in a traditional chest of drawers. Sure, traditional chest of drawers have the volume, as in, drawers are much taller, but it makes for few drawers stuffed with a bunch of little things. It's hard to organize and find stuff. I need a lot of smaller drawers instead of just a few large drawers.

So, I have decided to bring an old tool box that i bought at Costco several years ago into the house. It's one of those 27" CSPS Stainless Steel tool box that's really pretty, but it has no place in a workshop. The drawers aren't really designed to hold more than a few screw drivers, it's been used to hold my small collection of end mills and various cutters. I've decided to clean it up and bring it into the house (my study/computer room) to hold my computer parts.

Has anyone else done this?

disclosure: before you bring up SWOMBO... I ain't got one.

Somewhere I saw a Craftsman bottom box used as a boys dresser in his bedroom, with a racing car bed.
I have seen a machinists toolbox in a guys home office, next to his drafting table, to hold all of his drawing tools.
My father in law had a toolbox stack in a spare bedroom in his basement that he used as his "house workshop".

When i lived in an apertment, I had converted a front closet into a tool starage room. not ideal, but better than nothing. I took 1 drawer of my tool chest and made dividers with 1/4" luane plywood and epoxied the joints, worked great!

No SWOMBO? Go for it! I had my c'man stack next to my dresser in my apartment all thru college. Across the room was my machinist box on a base, sitting on a small table.

I had more tool boxes than furniture back then.

It's your place and your stuff.

>No SWOMBO?

You just have to have the right one. When we were first married, my closet had my nice work slacks, shirts, ties, cylinder heads, rocker arms, crank and some rods. The night stand on her side of the bed was a square of 3/4 ply on top of a stack of 4 Goodyear 275-60-15s for the Trans Am.

When we lived in Wise County in the double wide, the roll away was in the back bedroom.

When we moved here in 1997, the roll away was in the master and my night stand was a 351C 4V short block. Until the shop got built anyway. When we moved again in 2010, the roll away parked in the laundry room.

The hospital across the street from work and our nursing school building are full of C-man roll aways, both small and large. Always red too.

Haven't done it but i've been thinking about it. One of those kobalt or some other cheaper 27" vertical ones top and bottom, would be great to organize camera gear, electronics, and just general desk stuff. Or two bottom ones supporting an ikea butcher block for a desktop. Personally I think it's a great idea, I'd have done it if i had a dedicated office space but my only space is the living room.

I used fishing tackle containers for all my electrical stuff. The adjustable bins made it great for small components. Then I have another regular tackle box to house all of the electronic tools. The smaller containers fit on edge in a filing cabinet and the larger tackle box fits on a shelf.

I guess as long as it is not in plain site from the front door or in the kitchen, livingroom, master bedroom etc - I fail to see a problem...

My wife knows who fixes things when they break and knows when to fold'em and walk away from a losing hand.. I am a reasonable man and assume that you are as well.. Should not be a problem..

My wife uses one of my old craftsman side mount boxes as a night stand and to hold some jewelry. To use that was totaly her idea. I offered to buy her a real piece of furniture, but she insisted on the box.......she's a frugal lady.....I guess I got lucky when I married her, she is very low maintenance.

Yes, do it
We got a Cman toolbox that we put into my grandmothers closet to be used for jewelry and other stuff. Worked great.
Hospitals use them as mobile carts or crash carts.
My friend has several in his sons room being used as furniture and I think someone on this site put a black snap on box in his dining area for the wife to use because it matched their gloss black kitchen cabinets

So one of those stainless chests (maybe from Costco) used for storage in a high end modern stainless steel and tile kitchen. Looked pretty good.

Crappy pic, but this one came from Kmart and has a drawer with tools in it that it came with. My wife was being a smartass a few years back when she bought my big HF box. I knew i was getting "a tool box", I'm sure the look on my face was priceless. Anyways it ended up staying inside and has tools in the bottom and "MISC" in the top.

As a teenager I had a full size craftsman tool chest in my bedroom on the second floor of my parent's townhouse. It was a PITA carrying tools up and down the stairs, but had no where else to put my tools. You are a bachelor? Go for it.

On a similar note, my wife and I own a 3 bedroom house and have no kids. The house is on a slab. I want to pull the carpet out of one of the bedrooms and turn it into a small machine shop as it has an outside door. She ain't having it. WTF? :)

When I was fresh out of college, I had a 40" Snap-On rollaway in my living room with a small TV on top of it. At the time, I was living in an apartment and had no garage...and very little furniture.

I have a box in my kitchen for my knives and small appliances that I use at home and take with me when I am catering, it works great and I can lock it so the kids aren't using my expensive knives to pry **** open.

Heck yeah, I have the kiddo's art supplies stored in some cheapy plastic tool boxes in the kitchen. Why the kitchen? That's where the table is... And where else would I let them paint, cut, glue, and glitter? Certainly not on the living room carpet! Linoleum cleans much easier! And having a way to keep the crayons, markers, scissors, paint, and everything else seperated and tidy is a blessing. I guess we wouldn't have this problem if daddy wasnt an artist at heart. I have been considering a restore of an old Snap-On box from the 50's for my drawing supplies... And yes, it will be proudly placed in the drawing "studio" in my family room.

I have a Craftsman lower roller and upper set of drawers along with a 2-drawer lateral file cabinet full of saws, drills, and accessories in my kitchen. Until I build a shop, that's where they're going to reside. Yeah, no SWoMBO here either :dunno:

I've got a Gernst top box sitting on a night stand next to my side of the bed. It holds tie tacks, pocketknives, ink pens, and other "stuff" that ends up in my pockets. SWMBFAO gave it to me from her great grandfather's estate.

In the dining room there is a watch repair cabinet full of SWMBFAO's great grandfather's tools (and lathe). She has added several sets of pliers and screwdrivers to it but it still has all of the "old" tools in it.

There's a guy on strictlytoolboxes that has one in his kitchen. . .

BTW, what is "SWOMBO"? I know "SWMBO" (She Who Must Be Obeyed) but what does the extra "O" stand for?

No photo, but knew a guy that had a "workshop" in his apartment entry closet!

Craftsman roll away with a cutting board from Ikea on it as workbench. Pegboard on three walls under the shelf above that had a 3ft fluorescent fixture mounted under it. Wrenches, hammer, saws on the pegboard. A tiny vise on the workbench.

Actually fairly complete for a 3ft wide closet!

we needed more storage in the kitchen so we ditched the particle board microwave cart and put a Pink Box from sears in its place. Flatware tray fits nicely in the top drawer and rags, spatulas and the like down to the bottom drawer that has cookware and such.

All of my tools and boxes are in my living room. Granted, I'm not a mechanic. I repair and build lamps, gun grips, and other things. I just got some more last week. I'll post some pics tomorrow.

How else are you going to work on the motorcycle? I ain't running out to the garage every time I need a tool. And I DO have a wife that DOESN"T make my decisions.... She likes to ride also.
