You can use walnut shells, glass bead, or aluminum oxide. Check out tptools.com and click on abrasives. It really depends what you are trying to sandblast as to the media you should use. Maybe someone else can chime in here.

Did you ever hear of anyone using crushed clam shells for blasting? I'm up to about 20 bags of them right now and I would love to put them to good use for something. (Of course, I first need to come up with a way to crush them :))

I've been using copper slag on the truck I'm restoring, but it's really not coarse enough to get through the several layers for paint/primer that's on there. I just bought a bag of aluminium oxide so I'm hoping that will work a lot better.

This thread is way better than watching any of the "US car shows" on Discovery.

While I know most regard those shows, as nothing more than soap opera drama & largely I agree, I do still enjoy them, as they give me a window into the world of American car culture. But what I love about this thread is that it's the "real deal"

Keep up the good work Mark

Thanks guys I am glad you enjoy the Monster Garage. I guess now is the time to announce our next project. Today a deal was struck to purchase a 1970 Chevelle convertible project. The car is located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin so it is going to take up to 30 days to get it to Florida. This is a project already started and has got some of the hard work already done. It is not an original SS car but it will be when we are done with it :D As I understand it there are more 1970 SS Chevelle's on the road today than were built by Chevrolet. Plans are to keep the car original other than a killer set of tires and wheels. We will be looking to plant a big block under the hood. This Chevelle should follow the same lines as the Camaro project with painted frame, undercarriage, and nice detail.

The Chevelle looks great, will be following this build as well. Wife told me no more toys... until I get her a 70 chevelle.

Sounds like your wife has good taste in cars!!

The Dart got a little bit of a face lift today. With the motor being staged for painting and assembly of new parts, Bob and I decided the engine compartment needed some attention. It wasnt in bad shape but the motor was out of the car and if was ever going to get updated now was the time. Bob scuffed the engine compartment, sealed it and painted it. We are now concerned the engine compartment paint job is nicer than the car's paint. While the gun was out Bob painted those hand built wheel tubs in the trunk. wow they really look factory!!

With the engine bay painted it was time to spruce up the motor. Bob found this real nice 383 high performance big block for the Dart. Following is a pretty good before and after picture of the motor. One taken this morning and then the last taken about 6 pm this afternoon. Wow, those Summit parts we got in last week certainly made this motor look like a million bucks!! This should look awesome once installed.

Looking forward to watching this one! Show us all the gory restoration details.

My old '70 is still waiting patiently for me to get the shop finished before she gets her much needed attention.

Nice transformation, what did you use to paint the block?

on this block we just used your standard engine block paint from the local automotive supply house. we have used base coat clear coat automotive paint as well but the shaker can is much easier to use!!!

Looking forward to watching this one! Show us all the gory restoration details.

Hey shopnut! I will get to showing some additional pictures but we really cheated on this car. The car owner had already started the restoration and most of the hard work is done.......details will follow but he did a tremendous amount of ground work on the body. We need to get your car down here next.:)

Thanks for following and we will try not to disappoint you. Your Cutlass sounds like a nice project someday.

Don, you have more projects than all of GJ combined:lol_hitti I have seen your elcamino and it looks like a great project. We lived near Indianapolis, IN home of the INdy 500. In 1969 the indy 500 was using the elcamino as their track vehicles. My dad purchase one of these cars.......they were orange with black stripes and a black interior with a 396 in them. I was around 14 years old and kept that baby clean for my dad. He would let me drive this car out to my grandfathers farm so it was the first car I got to drive.

Very true. The same thing could be said for '67 L88/L89 Corvettes. My dad has an L89 (original owner) and a '70 LS6 (second owner since 1971) and he always has people doubting that either is original. He now keeps a copy of the build sheet and the protecto plate in each cars' respective glovebox.

Hey CSP: Can you show us a pic of those two great vetts?

Hey Mark: Can't wait to see the SS in the garage.

That DART motor before and after is so cool. You do some great work in turning back the clock. It brings back many memories as I had a friend in HS that had a red dart, 4 speed coupe. We had some good times cruising around in that car in the late 60's.;)

The '70 LS6 is a Chevelle, not a vette. Unfortunately I don't have any digital photos of them. It's been years since I've taken a picture of either one, and what I do have is on film. I don't have a scanner to convert the photos either. Next time I'm at my parent's house I'll try to get some pictures. The Corvette lives in a plastic bubble, so it will take some work to convince pop to get it out. It only has 16k miles on it, so he's pretty obsessed with keeping it clean and out of harms way.

Thanks CSP. I understand.

That vett is a true survivor and a benchmark car for original I am sure.

I got out of High School in 69 so both these cars were certainly some of my all time favorites.

Wow, those two cars are simply incredible. I hope he gets those cars out and shows them off. I am not much for driving my cars but I love to take them to shows for other people to enjoy.

Yes we are looking forward to the Chevelle too. Yes, I like the Dart too.......I wasnt a Mopar guy but this car is growing on me.

Simply put - Amazing - both the garage and the quality of your work. I've enjoyed looking at the pics and reading about your adventures ;)

Thank you. I do have to credit Bob for his experience and hard work. We have been very lucky to have two projects underway and another one in the pipe. Heck, about 30 days ago I was wondering what we were going to do to keep busy and a few projects have just fallen in our laps. I hope to keep this thread rolling with new stuff as much as I can.

DART

Finally our rear wheels arrived today. I only say finally because we really need ed these guys so Bob can finish narrowing the rear end. For a custom built wheel these were the ticket. These are Billet Specialty Street Lite wheels. I bought these right from Billet Specialties, they are a whooping 15 x 10 wide wheel and the backspace is only 3 1/2 so you see a lot of polished rim on the outside of the wheel. These wheels where only $240 each:thumbup: I really wanted 18" wheels but the customer did not want to spend that kind of money on the wheels. I think once we get those Mickey Thompson Street Radials on these rims tomorrow they will be perfect.

We will hopefully get these wheels mocked up under the car tomorrow and measure the distance so we can finish cutting the rear end down and get some axles ordered.

CAMARO

Today was a big day for the Camaro because the convertible top install was completed. It was nice to get the car back as this part of the build was a big hurtle. Tomorrow we get the front end alignment and later in the week Bob will complete the install of the interior. The car has to be finished by Christmas eve and there is no reason why it will not be done. At completion I will get plenty of photographs to document the completion. Wish us luck.

I like those wheels a lot. Funny, I was just looking at them on Billet's website about an hour before I saw this post.

The Camaro should make someone very happy at Christmas!!

Just browsed the whole thread... Awesome, love it all. The burb is sweet especially red guts in silver. Any pics of the full interior? Is the carpet red too? Also, I see lots of SBC love but no LSX motors. Any particular reason? Oh... anymore pics of the TT Viper motor?

I actually have 3 vehicles with 502's in them:) Point well taken with the SBC in the suburban. I had a pretty hot motor in the Burb before we started the body work. As I originally planned on selling the Burb we put the SBC in it. Now that I am keeping it I would love to have an LS or BB in it but for now the motor in the Burb is going to have to remain. Its a good driver and as it is near completion I want to enjoy driving it.

Pictures of the Burb will follow this week. Now the interior is done I want to take some final shots and I will post them. Thanks for asking. On the Charger it should be by here in the next few weeks and i will take some photos.

It's true I must live in good health til I'm 120 just to complete all of my projects
but it is a worthy goal

I have been to the Indy 500 several times and in 1996 the viper was the pace car and every where you looked around town that weekend you would see several vipers.
When I got home all I could talk about was vipers and for fathers day 1996
my wife surprised me with a black viper roadster
I think of Indy every time I drive that car

I got a chance to take some photos of the 66 Suburban today. I am very happy with the outcome and for now I am calling this one a keeper. My wife and I will enjoy it at some local shows here in Sarasota and I will probably drive it to work every now and them. I really like this vehicle not only as a hot rod but as a truck. I hope you enjoy the photos.:D

Hi

I am a brand new member tonight and all I can say is you have exhausted me. I have jumped in on this tread after you have posted a lot of pictures and you have me going still after midnight.

I have been involved in construction for over 30 years and I have to say you have rekindled my love for creativity and dreaming with your project.

You deserve a big pat on the shoulder for carrying out your dreams into reality.

So even if we hate you a little bit as some have said we love you just that much more.

I have been planning a garage project of my own for the past too many years on our country lot in the great white north and now I want to start tomorrow morning but it's snowing out.

Thx I think?

Anyway keep on trucking and tell Mary you love her very much because even if she only lets you in the house for beatings she has kept your love of your work and dreaming afire.

Cheers

Wow, Mark, you made 2 more take the GJ plunge! Welcome to GJ, ppc123 and Joe13!

The interior of the Burb really looks great. Looks nice and clean. But just give that a little time. Glad you decided to keep it.

Quick question to get you thinking... the name on the grille... red, black, or leave chrome?

:D I always like to shorten posts to keep my replies short but its your first post and your words are most excellent:thumbup: Welcome to the forum and I know you will find many garages and ideas to inspire you. Because of this thread my garage has become even more apart of my life because I can share what is happening with our projects and really get inspiration from guys just like you to keep me going. I am in the garage 7 days a week. My wife smiled as I read your post. Hope you hang out more.

Looks awesome... love the torch red, wish the carpet was red too! Is the silver paint semi-gloss or satin?

The big delima was to go with black or red carpet. As a fellow Corvette enthusiast I also like to use the "torch red" description of the interior as it is such a beautiful and vibrant color. We used base coat clear coat on the black and the silver. I am happy to get you the products if you want. We used a satin clear coat on the black and with the silver we did a 70% statin 30% gloss mix of the clear so it was not completely flat. I am really happy with the sheen of both.

Love the Burb.
Absolutely hate the rubber band tyres.
More suited to a jappa toy car.

Cheers.

thank you. I dont know why but I have a love of low profile tires. I like the big wheels and skinny tires.

This garage introduced me to this site. Beautiful space and beautiful Burb! keep up the good work. You give me something to aspire to.

Awesome Joe and glad you became of part of GJ. There are lots of cool guys on this forum and so much to read. I normally spend at least an hour looking around this site at what other guys are doing. I have another truck project coming up hopefully soon so if you like trucks I have a 69 chevy short bed pickup to finish.

Wow, Mark, you made 2 more take the GJ plunge! Welcome to GJ, ppc123 and Joe13!

Hey buddy, yes the members continue to grow and grow on this site. I was speaking with the editor of Garage Style Magazine last week and he says he has enough articles about garage's for his magazine for 2 years so the phenomena of garage's and guys are getting lots of attention. We have a place to hang out............who needs dirty magazines now:D......we can look at pictures of garages!!

You know I am glad we are keeping the burb too. Its not something I have to be nervous to drive and I would feel comfortable leaving it parked unattended in a parking lot.......as long as its in the back:)

We looked at the chevrolet embossing on the front grill and considered a color. At the time we decided it was something that could always be done. The one nice thing about having so many things to do is it keeps you from the little details and all the "what if I do this" syndrome. Its funny though as I know you are an architect and we are always thinking of the next level.....how to make it better. I am just thankful to have in running!!

I'm not generally a fan of street rods but I really like this Burb, including the wheels. The only thing about it I would change is the steering wheel. Hate those billet steering wheels. Really well executed overall. Merry Christmas.

yes........ I agree on the steering wheel. I planned on scuffing up all of the chrome area and painting it black. It is too shiny and does look a little out of place.

I love the spartan interior of the suburban. But then you see the billet mirror, the subwoofer, and other little modern details hidden in it. It's an interesting juxtaposition and I love the originality. The little details are what set some builds apart from the rank and file that we've all seen.

I'm not a fan at all of the big wheels, either but that doesn't take away from the craftsmanship and the thought that went into it.

Mark, I had to sign on to the forum just to tell you how impressed and inspired you made me. It's now 2:17am, and I need to sleep... but I couldn't stop reading. Certainly, I could relate to all the Chevy power projects. Love the shop/garage and house. Truly, thanks for sharing.

I only came to this forum to get ideas for my 4 car garage at the house, but now you have me thinking about ideas for a hangar/shop on my little runway. Hangars are almost always ugly square boxes, but I think that can change.

I think all my future hot rods will be powered by electricity, but my first love will always be a dead dinosaur burning big block!

Happy Holidays!
