Not too bad for a bunch of mis-matched tool boxes and a metal index card cabinet, huh?

I appreciate all of the compliments! I'll post more details later tonight when I have more time.

dladcock - that box is close to mine, but mine is a Proto. I scored it at a flea market for $20...it's in great shape. I use it as my road/junkyard box.

I just thought about the Malco when I saw your box, they look a lot alike.

Your bench turned out quite nice, I keep sweatin' it. Good Job!

Looks great!

Is the top a piece of laminate countertop?

That really looks sharp and I love the color!

But I'm afraid that I don't see how this connects to the thread title, "What I did with my $40 Home Depot Tool Cabinets" ? What am I missing?

Impressive. I don't know about the color- it's got that neat industrial look to it that really unifies the whole thing. I face the similar issue- I've got mismatched height cabinets too. I bolted them together into one cart and added a shelf. It will work for my needs.

And do I sy a 1970-72 Chevy C10 half ton? I recognize the headllight and grill. White painted bumpers were usually on the half ton farm trucks.

I still miss my '69 C10.

That looks fantastic. Please show how you did all that.

I'll do my best...I finished the final touches tonight just before I posted, but some of the photos of the bench construction were lost forever when my iPhone committed suicide by dunking itself in a 32oz cup of DrPepper.

I started with this -

2011-11-26152342.jpg

It was something I threw together last year to use as an assembly bench. The black cabinet on the left is a Husky unit I bought on clearance a couple of years ago. It is now the middle cabinet in the new bench. The cabinet on the right, with all of the stickers, was given away on Craigslist. The small top box sitting on the bench in the above photo was part of a cheap StackOn unit I bought at a garage sale about 5 years ago. The bottom box became a welding cart, seen here -

welder.jpg

And the top box, which houses drill and driver bits, punches, and chisels, had the stickers removed and was repainted along with everything else in the bench makeover.

When I bought the clearance Husky boxes last month I knew I was going to use them to redo this bench, but I had no idea I'd eventually decide to repaint them. However, once I tore the old bench down and started planning something more substantial I thought it would be a shame to go through all of that work without painting the index card filing cabinet (now stuffed with hardware) to match the tool cabinets. But I never really liked the gloss black of the tool cabinets, I wanted something more industrial...more vintage looking. So I went with the color above. I know not everyone will like it, but I absolutely love it, it's exactly what I was looking for.

I really like the color of the cabinets and the top.

Thanks. The color is "Berlin". It's made by Valspar under the name LIC. It's an industrial grade single stage urethane enamel that uses an activator.

The top is just a full sheet of 3/4" plywood ripped in half on the long side, glued and screwed together. I routered the edges and stained the top with a Sherwin Williams "Pecan" stain to match my other bench. Then gave it 3 coats of polyurethane.

Very nice indeed, would love more details.

DAMN! that looks killer!

That's what i am talking about! That looks GREAT!

Thanks! As you can tell by my post count I'm more of a lurker. It feels good to show off some of the ideas I've picked up by readings his site.

Look out Jack Olson!

Ha! Not even close. Jack's in his own category!

Boyd that looks fantastic !
That is going to make an awesome work station.

Thanks! I fully intend on finding out.

Very nice! The wood finish on that top looks to nice to beat on...:rocker:

It probably is nicer than it needs to be, but I'll be able to do 80% of the work I normally do without worrying about damaging the top. For the other 20% I have a 30" x 24" piece of 3/4" plywood that I'll set on the bench before reaching for the hammer.

Unfortunately, most of the construction photos were lost in an untimely cell phone accident, but I was able to load some photos onto my laptop before the iphone drowned. I'll check in the morning. In the meantime I'll try my best to describe what I did.

Basically, I built a platform/tray from 2x4s to set the tool cabinets on, minus their casters. I knew I wanted the finished height to be 39", which worked out perfectly because the height of the index card cabinet combined with the 1.5" bench top came right to 39". So all I had to do was subtract the height of the tool cabinets setting on the wood riser from 37.5" (the height of the bench minus the top thickness). I then ripped a couple of 2x4s to the correct height and built 2 simple frames to set just inside the lip of the top on each tool cabinet.

Boyd, great job.
What are your plans for the shelve area above the smaller box and if possible could you show us how you manage the contents of the storage bins?

I have a neighbor who asked me to come pick up a similar cabinet but I am hesitant as I would have to reorganize/arrange cabinets and my hardware.

If I could make it work I might just go pick it up.

Good luck on finding those!

I had been searching quite a while in L.A. and I never see them or in the one or two cases I have, the sellers think they're made of unobtainium and price them accordingly!

I recently found a couple of excess closet cabinets with 9 small drawers in each that I am in the process of reworking for small parts & tools storage.

I was going to inquire about the the coating. I painted a box with with an automotive base clear system when I was younger and decided I would never do it again. The automotive coating was just not durable enough for me.

Did you paint inside and out or just the exposed areas? What did you do for surface prep? Scotch bright? The final product is very nice. Hope you get years of enjoyment out of them! Certainly a timeless aesthetic, congrats.

Thanks again for all the great comments, fellas. It means a bunch!

I was able to find one photo from when the bench was going together. It's really just 3 box frames. One to set the boxes on, and two to make up the height difference of the hardware cabinet. The top is screwed to the two support boxes in several places. The lip on the top of the boxes keeps the bench top from moving horizontally and gravity (the top is heavy) keeps it from floating away.

Yep. Good eye on the bumper! It's a '72 short step half ton that I bought from the original owner, a farmer and rancher in Colorado.

That's a great color and is acutally closer to what I wanted originally (it looks a tad more grey than mine) but I would have had to get it custom mixed. The color I chose is a standard color, so if I decide to paint something else or need some for touch up it will be easier to match.
