Should I get blue point or snap on combo wrenches

Hello everybody, I am looking to get some nice wrenches, I already have cheap mastercrafts and I am looking to upgrade. but the problem is snap on 10pc wrench set is $350 and blue point is $175. I know blue point is taiwan but are they really that bad? If they are just going to turn out to be the same quality as my mastercrafts I will just save up and get snap on, anyways you guys let me know :thumbup:

You have mastercraft wrenches so I assume your in Canada. You interested in a nice used set of metric flank drive plus wrenches?

yeah thats what i was hoping but the price is a real issue. not sure if i was going to go for the flank drive plus, I heard they leave marks on the bolts

Why buy a new Snap On set? Buy it used and save a boat load of money. E-bay, CL, GJ classifieds.....

As for marks on the bolts, that is a very over used statement and not really true. Soft metals yes it might, but under normal use on steel hardware, it doesn't (or very rarely) leave marks.

They do, but minimal unless the bolt is crazy seized. It will bite hard if the bolt is stuck/loctite'd/cross-threaded. I actually like the bite, helps when a bolt "disagrees"

Have to watch with the Blue Point line,there are dealers refusing to replace them under warranty.One dealer in my area is doing this.

Wow really I didn't know that. I got spoiled since our dealer is a corporate dealer not a franchise she replaces everything no matter what.

The dealer in my area that is refusing to replace them under warranty my father had is covering them for a year under warranty.After a year,will not cover them under the warranty.The dealer in the Shelby/Hart,Mi area was telling customers Snap On was dropping the warranty on the Blue Point line,it was not true.I asked the Snap on dealer down the road in my area,he said that dealer was full of BS.

Get the Williams Supercombo wrenches. They're just as good as Snap-on but with a thicker rounded beam (handle).

Save up the little extra and get the snapons. You will never regret it, get the blue point set and you will always wonder what your missing. At least I would. Buy used, as soon as I decided to fix cars for a living I purchased a snapon wrench set at a pawn shop for a decent deal. I only have room for 1 set of open/box wrenches in my toolbox so I want that set to be the best avaiable and last a lifetime never needing to upgrade.

The main difference is length. The bluepoints are shorter than the Snap-on. They are both lifetime warranty. That dealer that wouldnt replace them was probably just trying to sell more tools or give his customers a bad excuse to upgrade their wrenches to Snap-on.

Save up and get the snapons, i got both, the blue point at home and the snapon at work, i kinda regret that i bought the bluepoints. Flank drive plus is hard to beat.

Plenty of nice used Snap-On 10 pc sets anywhere between $150-$200 here or on ebay.

If you insist on a new set, wait for one of the BOGO deals, at a minimum.

I have a BluePoint set of ratcheting combos and they are excellent quality. Taiwan ROC quality is well above PRC quality.

I bought a new set of SO 7mm-19mm FD+ in the classifieds for $175 shipped.

Neither. You can get an awesome 15 piece set of Proto ASD's for the same money as the 10 Blue Point's and you'll have better wrenches with USA stamped on them.

Buy the SO wrenches, of course. Once you have them you'll never regret it. The BP wrenches are fine for what they are, but are probably closer to your current wrenches than you think.

I've been using Blue Point for a couple years now. Always been happy with them. They are fine as far as length (I've never missed the "extra" lenght anyhow).

In aviation it is frowned upon to use flank drive plus wrenches, as they do mar up the bolts. We often use cadmium plated steel, so it is a serious issue. For anything else, they will do wonders.

I have a set of Blue point Metric and Williams Sae Taiwan wrench's
They are my wrench's that I use if I want to whack them with a Mallet, Hammer or in situations I need to use them underwater at work.
Or when some one at work wants to borrow one of my wrench's.

The Williams 5/8" wrench the points in the box end flattened on first use, I had to go back to my tool box and get a Super combo wrench to remove the nut.

They are definitely not anything close to USA Snap On and or JH Williams Quality.
Huge waste of money for either at the price they sell for IMO you are probably better off with something else.

Another vote for the USA made Williams Super Combo's.

Go with the FD plus`s, I`ve had mine for 15 or so years, never had an issue with them, used daily.

you already have an taiwan made wrench set. Makes little sense to get a second set for more money. If you really want a nicer set, look at the US made williams or SK wrenches. If you want a flank drive, the protos are very nice at a great price.

IMO...If you are going to make your living turning these wrenches, invest in the best and get the SnapOn set....

If they are for "weekend" use I just cant see spending that much.

From a former 15 year MOPAR tech..SnapOn wrenches and ratchets are the way to go for comfort strength and reliability.

The decision is easy...Justifing the cost is the question

If you can't afford the full set, I would highly recommend buying FD+ in common sizes, as they will SAVE YOUR FIGURATIVE LIFE one day.

Do they let you guys use those on aircraft? I would think they wouldn't since they mark up the fasteners. Especially painted nuts.

well I appreciate everyones help and input! I was on the snap on truck last week and my guy said in about 2 weeks they have a promo on where i buy the metric set and get the sae for free and there flank drive plus! so I guess i'm getting that lol. :rocker:

You will be very pleased with these. I have an older set of OEX's and I can honestly say that for working on cars SO is tops of any brand I have used, primarily because the box end and the beam are much thinner than other brands and can fit in tight areas.

For tools in general though, always consider Made In Canada Gray, on sale they are less than 1/2 the price of SO and they have a good warranty. West Pier Marine in Port is my fav dealer, but they usually have to order stuff in. There are a few dealers in St Kitts and Hamilton as well.

I have the bluepoints and they work well. Now that I've bought some of the larger snapon fd+ I can honestly say they're awesome.
