I recently picked up a Desmond Stephan 43P and an Athol 614 through CL. Both were out of town purchases that were picked up by friends. I did get the DS yesterday and will post pics soon. The Athol won't make it's way to me for a few months.
In the meantime, this should be here soon....

Test post for pic attach . I scored this baby Athol at a garage sale for

$1. :)
It is just under 6 inches long.
Included the hammers to prop it into the light and they are appropriate for use with such a tiny vise.

Here are some pics of the DS I just got. I do have some questions regarding the little pin and the threaded nut retention, but those will be in a future post.

What do you guys prefer for vise jaws? I want to make some for my wilton 500, it came with beat up brass jaws. I work in a machine shop so the making isn't an issue. I thought about making serrated or smooth hard jaws and make a brass cap to go over it when I need it. Does anyone have a bright idea for quick change jaws?

I'll try and remember in the morning. I'm heading out of town this week, so if not tomorrow then over the weekend.

The ad says: "MAY TRADE FOR ADULT TOYS..." so it could be, indeed, one desperate wife! :spit:

New find and was wondering if I could get some help from you more seriously infected addicts. I just purchased this Craftsman (Reed?) 5187. It has not been delivered yet but the Craftsman ID badge is nearly folded in half.
What is available for restoration as far as the name plate and any ideas on the age? (Its the only picture I have right now and it is still barn fresh)
Thanks,

Thoughts appreciated!

I needed that exact badge for my band saw and, at the time, had no luck finding originals.

There is a guy on eBay who makes decals. You can order something from him to tide you over until you are able to locate a metal badge. Or perhaps you can flatten/clean the badge you have and apply the decal to it for a more authentic look.

Balane,

Thanks for the quick response! Are all the metal tags of that era the same size. If I found an old tool box for example would that be the same metal tag or were they all dependent on the type of tool they where attached too?

Did you ever find one?

PS I ordered a couple of those decals, thank you for the tip.

They are not all the same size. I think there's about six different size tags from that generation. And different colors as well. I've seen red ones, green ones and gold/yellow ones. But if you find one that is the same size it will work.

I never did find one for my band saw. I kept the decal on it and just clear coated over it, I'm happy with it. I went with an oversize decal and I like the look of it.

I paid $75 for this one but it will go well with my other barn fresh Craftsman 5162 that was $40. I think $115 for both of these was pretty good. I just started collecting last summer.

Restoring a Parker Vise - 1854, missing the handle-what is the best option to fab a handle? Also what does the No.1 on the side of the vise indicate?

It means you will soon be having a conversation with Catalyze about your Parker Vise.

They were pretty cavalier about their numbering system but its just a model number. Generally some part of the number would tell you jaw size, swivel/stationary base or other features of the vise. So unless your vise has 1" wide jaws we are going to need some pictures or dimensions to tell you more.

Here's my Reed 4C since being painted and mounted on a stand. I still am missing the handle for one of the lockdown nuts. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to make one that will look real close to the original one on the other side? Thanks!

I snapped this pic while I had the babies out for a potential sale yesterday.

Typical CL deal. Guy knows the asking price, but doesn't want to pay.

Waste my time and his.

You have the spindle and nose, Are you just missing the handle? There are a few threads from guys showing how they made their handles.

Pat! Welcome to the vise journal, the best in the world. A great restoration on the Columbian with it's friend. I like what you did to the ends of the handle also.

One option a a VERY large / long bolt. here is my handle replacement for swivel locks, the same could be done with a larger bolt:

"Locking lever:
Get a 5-6” bolt either 5/16 or 1/4” (see above); also get a matching Jam nut. Grind the points off the hex of the bolt (cosmetic cleanup), and string it through the hole drilled in the coupler (see above).

Run the jam nut down and jam it into the bottom of the threads of the bolt. Cut off most of the excess bolt. Peen the remainder of the bolt threads into the nut as flush as you can, and file flat.
The last step is again cosmetic: Grind the points off the now captive Jam nut. You have just made a new locking lever and nut for the swivel base…"

Or you can simply get rod stock and a couple of large steel balls and weld the balls on.

"Page not found..."

yes, i know that, notice i changed it to the "XXXXX" in the link (and now i edited it so it's not a clickable link anymore). the ad had been pulled already (email from seller: "Its sold. Sorry. Got so many responses that I only deleted the ad" ). it would have come up as a bad link anyway (which is how all the old CL and ebay posts show up). that's why i saved the text and the ad title and posted it.

i still want to know if anyone here got it and what it really is.

Finally got a chance to make a base for my Reed 4C a while back... By far this is my favorite vise to use. :)

I was also a couple hours late...picked up a new welding table and vise down there on the same day, and would have loved to get my hands on this monster. I went home with an 8" Yost instead.

Here is my new Vise - Yost 8"...this baby is heavy and big. 36" long, 24" handle. That is a full size yogurt container to give an idea of size. It puts my Reed 204 1/2 to shame!

no help on the originals, but the Adjustable Handles from McMaster are awesome, look good, and are easier to use than a tommy bar. But if you're trying to stay original, then that won't help.

Welcome to the group. Great looking vises. Thank you for saving more vintage tools from being melted down and turned into HF tools.
