Thanks. She really likes tools in general. She is not scared of vises, even though my Desmond 100 fell on her foot about 2 minutes after she opened the package. Every time a new tool arrives at the house she guesses what's in the box/envelope and then proceeds to play with it until I take it downstairs to the shop. You should see her carrying around the Hazet 600 36mm wrench I have. It's almost as big as she is! Ha!

Here's a columbian vise I picked up at a local Boeing surplus sale for 5 bucks many years ago. I finally got around to restoring it and had a friend pinstripe it for me.

Too bad the swivel base on the 25 ran away sometime in the last 50 years. Here's the next one up. A Hollands 26.

Beautiful! A big Hollands is on my short list of vises I'd pay way too much money for, if I could find a nice one around here that is.

Threw my back out loading this one in the truck.

140 Lbs. of Reed 106.

25" long.

Been rode hard and put away wet.

Dynamic jaw insert must have come off, so the previous owner welded a new one on.

Other than that, it works as it should.

Now, where the heck do I put it.

I have it's younger brother, a 6" Reed swivel vise. Yours has the "ball" on the front for the handle to slide through where mine has the later "mushroom". I still need to build a stand for it.

Absolutely Awesome! You mind if I copy that? IMHO that is one of the coolest looking vises I've seen. Great job!

Also, what/how did you clean up the slide and anvil? What tool/abrasive did you use? Wire Wheel? DA? what grit? Etc...thanks!

I don't know about the gentleman above but I like to use my belt sander on machine vise slides, gives good finish and shows how much it got beat on LOL.

Here are my two. I recently picked up the columbian 204 1/2 at a craigslist stop, and I've had the new wilton for a year or two. I'm probably just going to wipe down the columbian vise. I don't think I'll have to strip and paint it.

Here's one. I think it got dropped. Doesn't really affect the use of it, but I think it could be patched? It's a pretty vise. Hard as hell to lift up the button to rotate it. It was cheap.

Here's another one. Anybody got a trick to straighten out the arms?

I have no experience break down a Wilton so I can't tell you this information is 100% correct.

To remove the handle I believe you un-screw the 3 screws on the collar next to the handle. Those Wiltons are very well built and highly sought after.

It's funny, every single one of these vises I bought thinking, "okay now I have my nice big vise and that's settled." Whichever one is the newest is my favorite, I guess it's always that way.

Here's the newest/favorite:

That's usually how it works with vises. I currently have 9 and always on the hunt for a bigger one but don't plan on giving any up lol

Thanks, You can copy it for sure. To clean it up i just used different scotch brite pads with my die grinder and then polished it up on my grinder with a buffing wheel.

Here's one solution if you don;t feel like cutting your bench for the taper at the front of many heavy-duty vises.

visemounting.jpg

Me, I'll cut the bench to fit the vise.

This shot is from one of Keith Fenner's (in my opinion) excellent series of machining videos on Youtube.

Hi,

This is my first post. It took me a while to read through all 300+ pages, but I can say you guys have successfully ruined me.

I just wanted a simple vise for a bench I built in my garage 2 months ago. I went out and bought one from a big box store, and then started reading here. Ugh. I returned the vise.

I have now acquired two vises in the past 2 months. See pictures. A new Yost 204, and a Chas Parker 205. The Yost I got for $90 brand new at Farmer's Choice. I believe they still have a bunch more in stock. The Chas Parker I picked up off CL local, and am in the process of trying to restore her. I do have a couple of questions, if you guys can help:

1. There is a fair bit of slop in the Parker. There is about 1" of space between the back of the main nut and the pin holding it in place. Is this typical?
2. The vise functions fine, but there may be a hairline crack in a part of the main nut. Too bad I couldnt see this when I bought it. I dont think this is fatal, but is it possible to buy another main nut from one of the manufacturers today making Yost, Columbian, Reed and replace?
3. Does anyone know what the screw is for these Parker vises? Is it Acme, or something else?

Thanks alot in advance. I am going through the electrolysis process, so I will post pictures when done and painted.

Cheers,
Ted
