For the most part, by the time you are doing the guide coat deal, you are mostly looking for small scratches or pin holes that are very hard to see without the contrasting color. Most of the leveling should already be done. Defects at this stage should be able to be corrected by more sanding, or very small amount of glaze and or primer.

While you are doing the initial assesment, prior to final blocking you can feel the high and lows with your bare hand. It takes some practice to get the feel of it tho. This is when you do your shrink/strech or fill as necessary. There are lots of ways to to it depending on how much cubic time and/or dollars you want to spend. hammer/dollly, *******, shrink disk, heat, filler, etc.

IMO there is nothing wrong with a light coat of properly applied high quality filler. Some will tell you different, and claim they NEVER use it. I have yet to see anyone practice this in the real world. In reality it just takes too much time for all but the most high end cars. IMO
The only way to learn is to jump in and try it. I recommend starting small tho, it will take a lot more time and work than you think it will,I PROMISE.

I am far from an expert, I do not possess the skills or equipment required.

This is just the rambling of a hobbyist car dude, your results may vary.
Good Luck:beer:

This One I started, then it sat behind my Garage for Years.
Then a Friend thought it would be a Great Gift for my Nephew (who was getting married).
So a Handful of us did this in 7 Months and handed it over to him the night before his wedding.
Started with a 4 door 1955 Chevy Beauville Wagon...straight 6 and powerglide...bench seat.
Built a 1972 4 bolt main 355 V8 and a 1967 Muncie 4-speed...IROC electric Bucket seats...

I did my 2000 Civic SiR last winter and sold it in the spring for more than I had invested in the car after driving it for a year and 10,000km.

Cool thread, I'll play! Though it's not as class of a job as the others posted, it was my "first resto, first DIY paint" job....and I did farm out the metal work, as I didn't have a welder at the time. Buying a welder would have been cheaper! LOL

For you guys that are painting in your garage at home:

What kind of respirators are you using? So much of the two pack paints now are full of isocyanates. I'm guessing no one is shooting with that? The old respirator just isn't up to that task. . .

I'm curious because I was warned off of painting in my garage a while ago and but I would still like to do another project or two. . .

Let me know what your using for paints and protection!

ZRX61...you Win! Nice Big Re-Paint Job!

KPSquared...the Last Few Cars that I did were the Base Coat/Clear Coat Paints. and Yes, the Paints are Not something that you want to fool with, without a Good Respirator. I have a couple that I keep in Zip Lock Bags when not in use. And always get brand new canisters before each use. (Just buy the correct ones).

I also use a HVLP system. which includes a Heated Turbine compressor.
And Good Cross flow venting.

But...Buy the Best Respirator that you can afford...its your lungs and Nervous system!

and welded a Drivers Side Quarter Panel on (that was not aligned)
and Aftermarket Fenders, Hood (that didnt fit well)
Started off Ugly....

Full body paint suit, gloves, hood & supplied air full face respirator set up.

.... but you can apparently use the purple filters on a half face. Just remember that you also absorb isocyanates through your skin/eyeballs etc.

Hey DirtyWhite......get rid of the back bumper and put a rollpan on it. I sold this car to a coworker a while back (like a dummy) but I talked him into putting a rollpan on and it cleans up the back a lot I think. The pan came from Honest Charley's and is made for an ElCamino but is a direct boltup to the Malibus.

I sure wish they had digital cameras back in the early 70's. Anyways, here is the last this I worked on. We had just finished up rebuilding the engine and working out the bugs (swapped a V6 to a V8) and I had to go out to my nephews shop to let his dog out one Sunday morning. I wasn't going to drive the truck but at the last minute decided to. Just a few hundred feet from the house, I stopped at the Stop sign (4 way) and saw another truck coming at my side. She slowed down like she was stopping but ran the sign and hit me. She was gabbing on the phone and said she didn't even see me. $3500 damage. They wanted to total the truck because of the year. I talked them into cutting me a check for $3000 and fixed the truck myself.

Nice Jobs on the Civic and on the Cougar.
I love those Old Cougars!

Thanks! Me, too! (Just don't let them HEAR you calling them OLD!!! :D )

HOLY CROW! You're supposed to use a respirator?? That might explain the twitch I developed........:eyecrazy:

Just kidding. Yes, used a respirator, "paint approved", from my paint supplier. Can't remember which canisters it used, as it's been 4 years ago now.

Most of what I have in my shop is used auction or CL purchases, so yes, I am a cheap *******. I have recently purchased one of the SATA Vision air supplied hoods, complete with the belt filter/regulator assembly. I had been looking for one to come along for about 4 years when I got that one. It was a couple years old and un-used, got a heck of a deal on it. So I am good to go on iso's. But for yoo guys using half masks, one thing to keep in mind is that they are also absorbed through the skin, and especially attracted to moisture. That means your eyes... So for better protection, anyone using a filter respirator and spraying iso's should at a minimum use a full face respirator. The one I used before getting the Sata hood was a 3M full face respirator, I think a 6000 series. This keeps the iso's out of your eyes, and features the same replaceable filter cartridges 3M uses on most of their masks.

This is an Ultima Black Cloud build, many of the mods I didn't get pictures of, such as hidden wireway in the backbone, hidden mounts for the oil tank, and welded the struts to the rear fenders.

As a painter, one of my pet peaves when it comes to bikes is all the paint rubbed off the rear fender from the seat. So we didn't use the f/g pan the owner had purchased, and I made one out of 12 ga steel that had no deflection when you sat on it. I set it up with about 1/4 gap to the rear fender, which was about perfect for maintaining an 1/8 gap once upholstered.

Here's the paintwork, all H/K products. Epoxy primer followed by black sealer, black basecoat, and intercoat clear..

Hey that wagon looks nice.
I don't think the tucked bumper looks too bad.....and its metal.
I like the fact that it is unlike a purchased part.
Oh yah, where would I put my license plates LOL

Ya, doing some reading you can get away with a full face with the right cartridges but they have a strict schedule for changes. Apparently they don't last that long with iso's. This is great info. I have a couple projects once the shop is finished. . .time to find a full face and some paper PJ's with the feet. . .:p

Todd, sharp looking car. Did you spray all of the KBC at once? I'm looking at using the KBC Organic Green on the 55 wagon and just don't see all the parts fitting in the booth at once.... wondering how forgiving it is for separate sprays...

Was over 25 years ago now,and I didn't take many pictures. This just scratches the surface of what really happened.

Here's something I did a few years ago. It had more rust then first thought, as well as the body damage from a tire blowout on it way to its new home. I took about 6-7 months from start to finish. Lots of new hand formed sheet metal repair panels.

I wanted to start a Thread that everyone can show off their "At Home" Restorations or Paint Skills.
I know that there are some "Big Dollar" Professional Jobs that have been done on some Great looking Rides.
But this is for the "Do it yourself" Group.
Some are Quick Jobs and Some are as Good as the Pro Jobs done right out of your Driveway or in your Garage.
There will be some Old Paint Jobs as well as New Ones.
We all get Better and Learn from each Job that we do.

I will start with the First Full Paint Job that I did on a Friends Duster.
I used DuPont Lucite Acrylic Lacquer Paint back then (32 years ago).
We started by Stripping most of the Paint off with Paint stripper.
Then Sanded it down to the Metal, or Previous Bodywork.
