all swivels are best. I can maneuver mine into any tight space or any direction while under a vehicle. I have the black 4 drawer and that's how mine came.

My cart came with 4 swivels (I dont remember the item #) but 4 swivels is the way to go! I've been watching this thread for a while and got some great ideas for future mods. Thanks, keep them coming!

finally picked one up last night. i admit, i'm VERY impressed and love it. the plan for it is to just keep in my enclosed trailer for taking to the track and what not. i also bought a bunch of cheap tools to start filling it up with. cheap so incase i lose 1 or 2 it wont kill me

i actually joined these forums just for this thread.. here's what ive done to mine:

first mod, magnet strips on the lid. this eventually wore out my struts, so after my second mod, which was the creeper hook, i upgraded my struts to 60 LB rated hood struts. yes HOOD struts. like the ones that hold up the hood of a lincoln. big ones. i like the struts over the locking hinges. just a preference. after that i did the drill out holes and add washers to make holes smaller bit, but instead of RTV i used small magnets, that way if i decide to go back to the larger ones, there's no mess. i used matching carriage bolts for all my mods so the hardware matches the factory HF hardware. i also threw in a piece of red ply wood in the bottom to protect it from the heavy tools like hammers and impact guns that get tossed down there.

all my socket organizers are handmade from HF socket rails, 3/8 plywood spray painted flat black, and 3/8 screws. all my air tools have little handmade coat hanger wire hooks that hang them to the side of the cart, and i pryed up the lid just enough to fit over them, that way when the lid is closed they are secure, but quck and easy with the lid open. i have the rubber glove caddy on the side now, and alot more tools in the cart than what is pictured here.

i also just ordered the 7 drawer side cabinet and a 'fix' for the tipping issues that i will reveal once its all done and put together. ill also take updated pix and post them then :)

and i noticed you went with a subframe of sorts. i like that idea too, though i dont think im going that far. i'll probly just bolt them together at the bottom, mod the top to hang lower, bolt it there too, re-make my creeper hook to the back of the side box, and put the new casters on the far end. my end cab is going on the right, and im going to TRY :) to organize the drawers in the same general way the others are, that way its just a natural extension to more of the same types of tools. just a bit more to the right for more sockets, ratchets, wrenches etc. if its not in the drawer on the left, its in the one on the right kind of thing.

the selling point for this mod for me was the added benefit of a small work table as well as the extra storage. i mean you can add just a small work table, but then you have basically dead space beneath it. my co-worker has the OLD blue point 4 drawer cart. his has the modular attachments for the blue point accessories. his side tables ****. they bend down, they arent flat, and they cost more than my whole cart.

my cart was new or a few weeks old when most of those pics were taken, its going on 2 years old now. a little spit and polish and she still looks 100 times better than his 5 year old, 800 dollar blue point 4 drawer. his drawers dont have the locks to keep them from rolling out when closed, so they're always flying open, his lid is so tore up he's given up on trying to close it. his casters are much harder to roll than mine, but still quieter. and the paint is just terrible. did i mention he paid 800 for it :) i'll only be into mine 400 AFTER the side box and new casters... and even the metal thickness is equal. he's kickin himself now. he's even considering bolting one of the side mods onto his blue point cart and tellin the snap on dealer where to stick it. gotta love harbor freight..

I just wish the drawers were the same depth as the cart

about how much is the difference? post pics? maybe one drawer out from each?

im still totally doing the mod, but there isnt all that much info out there on things like that.

The drawers pull out the same length but the carts drawers have a little more room. I flush mounted the side box with the front of the cart but there is a 1 inch gap in the back and it's 2 inches shorter.

i see what you mean now. i literally took out my ruler and measured the difference. on the screen the cabinet's drawers are about an inch shallower, but that inch is still inside the face of the cart, so that backside of the drawer is just a little more useable than the backside of the cart. as far as easier to get things out of, but having that extra bit in the cart makes it handy for stashing longer tools. this gives me a few ideas. use the cabinet for my 'junk drawer' and all the little bits that always roll to the back of my existing one. and that pic of the gap at the back makes my creeper idea an even better one. i was worried i'd stick out too far in the back, and wouldnt be able to fit down one of the hallways at work. now im not so worried. awesome. thanks!

Finally got time to work on the cart again. Today was the day to put my plan for the prybars and big screwdriver into motion. I considered getting the Sunex prybar side box but after much thought I decided that I would cut out a portion of the area on the handle side of the cart and make my own piece to solve the problem. This cart is specifically for my race trailer so I only need to make room for the 3 biggest prybars and 1 big screwdriver since I only take part of my tools to the track.

I began by laying out where the cut would be. I actually used a 2" hole saw to punch out most of the material and then trimmed it up with my little HF air recip saw. I taped up the inside of the compartment to minimize the paint damage.

Where I needed to start the hole saw there where holes already in the metal so I cut a piece of 1/4" hardboard and put it in the bottom of the compartment so I could drill through that first so the holesaw had a pilot hole.

Here's a shot from the bottom of the hole all trimmed up.

I'm using a piece of 2 x 2 x 1/8" angle 18 5/8" long.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/93396776@N06/8501624972/" title="034 by TerryHatfield, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8088/8501624972_415c494b19.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="034"></a>

I sprayed a few coats of Seymour MRO Safety Red on it which is almost a dead on match to the HF color. I used the same to touch up the hole in the box as well.

Here is the new piece mounted with 2 - 5/16" x 3/4" stainless button heads. It was quite a trick to get the nut on the one on the right. Took me about 30 mintues of fishing through the hole for the prybars with the nut taped to the open end of a 1/2" wrench with vise grips chomped on the box end but I finally got it. It was worth the hassle. I realized after it was too late that I could have just drilled the hole in the angle bigger in that end and just went through that hole. Oh well. Live and learn.

I looked at some snap on carts on there, some of those must come out of the same factory as the us general. The same locking bars, opening handle, though they had a different number of drawers, they looked the same.

Very nice. I like it as it also prevents the other screwdrivers on the stock holes from hitting the side of the box and scratching it.

Figured I might as well post the rest of the pics of my cart. While was doing the prybar mod today, I took the chance to actually load all the tools I will be taking to the track into the cart just to see how everything would fit. As I said before, the purpose of this cart is to go in our race trailer only.

I'll start with the bottom.

I have 5 of the HF plastic boxes...which are really great I might add...in the bottom of the cart. 3 of them hold all my electrical connectors, wire, zip ties etc.. 2 have stainless and zink hardware and screws. Have some gloves and such packed inbetween the boxes. I put door edge guard on the upper edge of the lower shelf to protect the edge.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/93396776@N06/8500482857/" title="028 by TerryHatfield, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8244/8500482857_f2eb5d244a.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="028"></a>

Little room left over in the very front of the shelf for my big Blue Point channel locks, heel bars, and a couple of clamps.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/93396776@N06/8501590324/" title="029 by TerryHatfield, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8251/8501590324_eb4e377549.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="029"></a>

In the bottom drawer I have some of my 18 volt Bosch stuff, drill, small impact and the 3/8" impact, along with the charger, plastic box of bits and such. My Snap On drop light fits in this drawer as well.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/93396776@N06/8500508011/" title="031 by TerryHatfield, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8231/8500508011_0b5bcd5dc1.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="031"></a>

Next drawer up has wrenches. I started to not put any of my metric stuff in the cart as both the pit cart and the dragster have only SAE fasteners so I probably won't need anything metric...unless I don't take it.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/93396776@N06/8501590440/" title="010 by TerryHatfield, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8513/8501590440_ec943685be.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="010"></a>

Next drawer up on the left has hammers, files, punches and chisels and magnets on a stick etc...

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/93396776@N06/8501590434/" title="011 by TerryHatfield, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8228/8501590434_5b9fc24305.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="011"></a>

Drawer above that has pliers, vise grips, etc....

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/93396776@N06/8501590420/" title="012 by TerryHatfield, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8228/8501590420_9e3de1f02b.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="012"></a>

The upper drawer on the right is packed full. It has my tap and die set, hyd. cable crimper, extractors, tire gauge, tape measures, infared thermometer and misc. pens, air blower etc...

Tap and die set just barely fits in this drawer..

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/93396776@N06/8500482927/" title="019 by TerryHatfield, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8371/8500482927_e3485c9c3c.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="019"></a>

Stuffed a couple pairs of gloves and the hyd. crimper on top of that.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/93396776@N06/8501590380/" title="020 by TerryHatfield, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8525/8501590380_6b9e17f1ed.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="020"></a>

One final shot of the top. Lots going on in here. I spent quite a bit of time trying to get this just right. I wanted to wedge stuff in as tight as I could so it doesn't scatter when the cart is in the trailer going down the road. Socket sets in magnetic trays are stacked. Metric on the bottom, SAE on top. Some ratchets, extensions, thumb ratchets, Allen wrenches and sockets along with the screwdrivers and pry bars of course. I saved some room on the right side for the Wiha insulated screwdrivers and nut drivers I have on order. We are building an electric dragster so the insulated stuff is a must. Door edge guard on the front edge of this compartment for protection as well plus it makes the lid fit tight to the cart.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/93396776@N06/8500747829/" title="038 by TerryHatfield, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8372/8500747829_f37133dd5c.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="038"></a>

I also aded some more door edge guard to the upper and lower lips of the side shelf. I could tell that it was going to bang on the side of the cart in transit. The edge guard should keep it from damaging the cart when it does plus I kinda like the look of it.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/93396776@N06/8500482907/" title="021 by TerryHatfield, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8105/8500482907_cf028ac500.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="021"></a>

All in all I was impressed that I could stuff this much into the cart and I'm very pleased over all with the cart. I should have everything I need when we go racing. Pretty hard to beat for a little over $200 including the mods and I've had a great time working on it.

Thanks, alpine. It does do that. I have some helicopter tape that I'm going to put on both side sof the cart to keep the other screw drivers and such from chipping the cart once I get the Wiha stuff in and I decide where everything will go.

Everything fits perfectly under the lid now. I'm super happy with how this turned out!!!

Thanks! I've pretty much always been a Snap On guy all the way but these carts and the HF 44" box that I have now as well are just too good not to have. They are not to the quality level of Snap On but they are plenty good enough for me and they don't look out of place in the tool box lineup at all.

so, as promised here are some fresh new pics of the cart. its 2 years old and still looks great. i didnt dress it up or clean it all pretty for these pics. i left the work it does all over it, maybe that will give the non-believers a little more faith in this wonderful box. more pix after the side cart addition, and im kicking around ideas for a larger side table mod... we'll get there eventually too.

I got my red cart last, found a pair of swivle casters locally for $12 each. Good quality rubber wheels. I might have to get a another set b/c they are red.
I'll worry about that later, I'm gonna make my side shelfs soon. I'm using those folding shelf brackets that oneandgone used. I'm using the 12" versions rated at 130lbs each.
For the shelf I'm using the top of a torin cart that I've had since the mid 90s, the bottom is damaged so it would have been scraped sooner or later. The top feels like its made from 12 gauge metal, plenty strong, I'm gonna cut it across the width wise.

I used the HF magnetic strips on this using 3M super strength molding tape.
Will see how it holds when I close the lid. I heated up the metal with my heat gun before applying the tape. I had to move one strip and had to use a pry bar to get it up
Also removed the drawer locking mechanism.

... I took the chance to actually load all the tools I will be taking to the track into the cart just to see how everything would fit. As I said before, the purpose of this cart is to go in our race trailer only....

How do you plan to secure it in the trailer? I strapped mine to the wall using a couple of "D ring" tie downs.

That 3M automotive trim tape is some darn impressive stuff. I've been using it for years...It's never failed, even in applications where I thought it should have!
