That anvil-vise is pretty toasty, I wouldn't give more than $10-20 for it and that would be a lot imo.

Found these while looking on the Northern Tool website....Looks to be the same as the Craftsman Professional? Anyone have one?

They list 4, 5 and 6'' sizes...

Picked up some old USA steel today. I went to look at a bridgeport mill in a closed machine shop. The mill was too big for me but I kept tripping over vises on the floor of the darkened warehouse (no electricity). For safety reasons, I offered to buy them from the guy. I did a quick cleaning before the photos. Now they can take their places in the restoration queue.

Small crack in dynamic jaw. Should I/can I do anything about this?

5" Wilton (#2). Brass jaws again

Notice the weld at the base. Is this a common failure point?

12 pt bolt, you may need to grind down a socket to clear...

The crack needs attention; I'd cross screw with a counter sunk, flat head, socket head screw, and braise or silver solder...

I figure I would make my first post a picture of my new favorite tool in my garage.
2azy7eqa.jpg

It's a picture I got off the Internet, but I traded a guy that works for Wilton for an old two stage craftsman snow blower. I will post a picture of it mounted when I finish building my welding table.

Really nice collection of vises, do you sell them or are they used. I can not help but noticing how clean all your machines and vises are. Thanks for the picture.

I use them, but not frequently. I need to make some stands for the machinist vises. The machinist vises are NOS that were recently purchased and have not been used much yet. The 4.5", 6.5" and 8" Tradesman vises have been used quite a bit. It's hard for me to pass up a good deal, especially on old tools or equipment that are getting harder and harder to find. I try to take good care of my tools so they are in good shape when I pass them on to someone else.

I got the Desmond Stephan 43P mounted, cleaned, lubed, and mostly assembled today. I still need to finish a few small details and get a better retaining pin for the nut, but otherwise it is ready to go. I haven't decided whether or not I am going to highlight the lettering.

bigcaddy....

That little Palmgren is cool!!!

Thanks,

I've only come across a few Palmgren's in all of my searching.....but then again, i wasn't always searching for vises.

I know i bought one 3+ years ago and my dad snagged it from me. I was just looking at it earlier this evening when i was finishing up this little guy. Same size but a bit older judging by the decals on the castings.

Jon - very nice Desmond! I always liked the front collar that they and Parker used.

Bigcaddy - it isn't a true Bigcaddy vise photo unless the orange trees are in the background

Your snap on vise looks like something to be proud of.
Thanks, here is a picture of it done, decided to go with more Wilton paint color, since snapon stickers are obsolete.

This just arrived in the mail. A Wilton 1644 I picked up off eBay. Yes, it's chrome. I'm hoping to tear it down and polish it up over the next few days, but it'll be my first vise tear down. Anyone know where I can get a replacement swivel arm to replace the nut?

I really do hate it. My uncle, who is 70 yr old gave it to me. His uncle gave it to him. I guess he run a small repair shop. I was working on finding a picture of him and his shop. I'm still gonna use it. I have a 3" columbian on a wood bench that I do motorcycle fork service on. Since that doesn't require much, I think it will be fine

This is going to freak out a few readers.. but it's possible to stick that part back on with crazy glue. I've actually seen it used to repair the crankshaft in a Harley. It will be less noticeable than brazing, but for aesthetic reasons will be fine.

Very nice Wilton find!! If you decide to repaint it, the sticker that fits in the inset is available on this forum.

Folks....it is with Great Sadness that starting tomorrow, I have to box up everything in my shop and crate my vises. It all has to go into storage until we sell our house and get moved to North Carolina. I have a few vises scattered around the country waiting for me to go get them after I get moved. Some very nice friends are babysitting them...or sitting on them as the case may be. So until I get settled again, I am just a photo lurker. Keep up the great collecting and work!!

Craig, I'll have to hold on to this vise until after your move. Finished making the new jaws for this Prentiss # 20 and will add these to my Jaw Web site. The Vise is yours after your move if you still want it.

Wanted to let the members know that I set up a discount for 10% on all jaw orders just put GJ in the discount box during checkout. Kevin

This is a vise i picked up a few days ago. I cleaned it up and put it to work. Maybe I shouldn't use it because of how old it is. But these things can take so much more abuse then a bench vise. So even though I'm pretty sure this thing is at least 160 years old. (Can't find a brand on it but note the pin and wedge holding the pivot arm instead of a bolt and nut) I'm going to put it to good use.
