Picked up some old USA steel today. I went to look at a bridgeport mill in a closed machine shop. The mill was too big for me but I kept tripping over vises on the floor of the darkened warehouse (no electricity). For safety reasons, I offered to buy them from the guy. I did a quick cleaning before the photos. Now they can take their places in the restoration queue.

5" columbian with brass jaws

What is this type of fastener called and who can loan me the appropriate socket?

4 1/2" Columbian. Hot forged jaws I think. Well used

5" Wilton (#1). Brass jaws. Unsure of model number or vintage on either wilton but I bet someone here will know.

Small crack in dynamic jaw. Should I/can I do anything about this?

Notice the weld at the base. Is this a common failure point?

12 pt bolt, you may need to grind down a socket to clear...

The crack needs attention; I'd cross screw with a counter sunk, flat head, socket head screw, and braise or silver solder...

It's a picture I got off the Internet, but I traded a guy that works for Wilton for an old two stage craftsman snow blower. I will post a picture of it mounted when I finish building my welding table.

I use them, but not frequently. I need to make some stands for the machinist vises. The machinist vises are NOS that were recently purchased and have not been used much yet. The 4.5", 6.5" and 8" Tradesman vises have been used quite a bit. It's hard for me to pass up a good deal, especially on old tools or equipment that are getting harder and harder to find. I try to take good care of my tools so they are in good shape when I pass them on to someone else.

I got the Desmond Stephan 43P mounted, cleaned, lubed, and mostly assembled today. I still need to finish a few small details and get a better retaining pin for the nut, but otherwise it is ready to go. I haven't decided whether or not I am going to highlight the lettering.

Just took a few minutes to finish up a litte 1.5" Palmgren drill press vise that i bought over the weekend. Not my favorite style of vise but very easy to work on and break down nicely

I've only come across a few Palmgren's in all of my searching.....but then again, i wasn't always searching for vises.

I know i bought one 3+ years ago and my dad snagged it from me. I was just looking at it earlier this evening when i was finishing up this little guy. Same size but a bit older judging by the decals on the castings.

This just arrived in the mail. A Wilton 1644 I picked up off eBay. Yes, it's chrome. I'm hoping to tear it down and polish it up over the next few days, but it'll be my first vise tear down. Anyone know where I can get a replacement swivel arm to replace the nut?

It's not a structural issue, you should be able to have it brazed back on for looks.

This is going to freak out a few readers.. but it's possible to stick that part back on with crazy glue. I've actually seen it used to repair the crankshaft in a Harley. It will be less noticeable than brazing, but for aesthetic reasons will be fine.

It all has to go into storage until we sell our house and get moved to North Carolina. I have a few vises scattered around the country waiting for me to go get them after I get moved. Some very nice friends are babysitting them...or sitting on them as the case may be. So until I get settled again, I am just a photo lurker. Keep up the great collecting and work!!

This is a vise i picked up a few days ago. I cleaned it up and put it to work. Maybe I shouldn't use it because of how old it is. But these things can take so much more abuse then a bench vise. So even though I'm pretty sure this thing is at least 160 years old. (Can't find a brand on it but note the pin and wedge holding the pivot arm instead of a bolt and nut) I'm going to put it to good use.
