Hazet Socket Set - Good Deal?

Hi all, my first post but I have been a lurker on here for a good while.

Name's Tom and I hail from the UK. Been spannering for a few years acruing tools (I have restored and continue maintaining a 1955 Volkswagen Beetle) so have started my tool collection from the ground up.

I'm in the process of acquiring some decent tools, as my 'box has a great variation in quality. Completed my resto on a moderate budget so didn't always have the best tools, but I have started to see my cheaper ones wearing out and the higher quality stuff keep going, so I know it makes sense to upgrade to better stuff.

Up until now I've been using a 30+ year old Japanese 1/2 socket set that was given to me by my dad. The ratchet is showing some signs of age and the mechanism is a bit dodgy, and the rest of the set has various parts missing or has seen abuse in the past. I've read the Japanese tool thread and the set does seem well made, so I need to do some research to see what it is. Anyway...

I've been looking to get a decent 1/2 socket set that will last me the foreseeable future. I stumbled across the Hazet 902SPC but couldn't find much out about it. Seems like a good price and it'll get me all the sizes I need in 1/2 and 1/4, as well as a couple of extensions and nice ratchets. I already have a half decent 3/8 set, as well as a few 1/4 odds and ends. Here's a link anyway:

http://www.conrad-uk.com/ce/en/product/816196/Hazet-902SPC-47PCS-63-125-mm-14-12

Love to know what ye think :)

Ideally after something German, but I couldn't find anything Gedore or Stahwille in the same price bracket. If you have any other recommendations please let me know!

Cheers,
Tom

Hazet makes nice tools.

Search for a thread on this board titled "Where do you get your Hazet tools from?" There are a few dealers in this site that will ship worldwide including Jens.

It actually seems quite cheap for Hazet stuff.

Quite often there are 5% and 10% discount codes floating about for Conrad Uk, so take a look before you buy.

Sockets and bits etc will all be top notch.

I would assume the ratchets have a course tooth. Does this worry you?

The 1/4" drive screwdriver they include is these sets is a real let down, but is fairly inexpensive to replace with decent one if you plan to use it a lot.

Also just to point out, there is no 5.5mm socket (M3 standard size), 30mm (M20 standard) or 32mm sockets.

Alx is now a UK Hazet dealer, so you may like to pm him and see if he can sort you out.

I just did the math and it works out to about $251.00 American Dollars for your set; I would think for that kind of money you are getting a very nice set of tools.

I did think the same, that it's pretty cheap for Hazet!

I'm used to a coarse tooth ratchet so that's no biggie. M3 and M30 aren't sizes I use, but could easily pick then up. Don't currently have a 1/4 screwdriver so I'll see how it goes with it.

Thanks for the advice, I think I'll drop Alx a PM :)

Nah, that's the cheaper SPC line...not the same finish.....but if you live in the uk, I can sell you a Garant/Stahlwille 1/4" set unused....post me a pm if you are interested.

As you probably know, this is not made in Germany. If you're after this set, I can do it for £20 less and that includes delivery. That said, if you can up your budget I would recommend going for 856-1 for 1/4" (lots of pictures here) and buying something like 932N 1/2" separately. Or you can get sockets and ratchets individually and save on plastic cases (they are not cheap).

Are you sure about that? I checked on it once and I thought it was.

You know what, I've now checked this high res picture and I think you are correct. The ratchet definitely says 'Germany' on it and I believe that sockets should too. What confused me initially was similarity of this to other Hazet sets that don't say Made in Germany on them. I used to own Hazet-for-Snap On 3/8" set and although sockets were stamped Germany, nothing else in the set was, including ratchet. Anyway, I've now emailed my sales rep about the origin of this set as it doesn't appear in the printed catalogue either. Will report back as soon as I hear from them.

Hm, that's interesting. I didn't know what the difference was, but was thinking theey were top quality. There must be some kind of cost saving though, as that is a stinking good deal. The plastic case is quite cheap compared to a metal case or SmartCase, or even a standard plastic Hazet case.

I've never seen any Hazet for SO stuff.

I agree - the price is very competitive even when compared to other Hazet sets.

Here it is - Hazet socket set that Snap On sells on their website. Looks like this:

All sockets were stamped Germany but ratchet, universal joint and extensions weren't. I have a pair of 3/8" ratchets - they have Germany on them, universal joint too. Not the extensions though.

It was a good set really but a duplication to what I already had. Really convenient to work with, too - just pull it out, open and there they are - all sockets, shallow and deep, all extensions right there in one place and within reach.

I then tried finding it in Hazet catalogues but to no avail. They pop on ebay every now and again (I've see two) so maybe worth keeping an eye out for one.

This set is made in Germany. The difference to other sets is that it does come with "cheaper" ratchets that are not even on par with the old style black handle 916SP. Also the bits are not the same quality as in the regular sets. Finally it is a "cheap" plastic box. Read cheap as not the same quality as in other Hazet sets.

The price of the set is 146 Euro plus 19 % VAT within the EU. Plus actual shipping.

I thought it might be the case regarding quality, after all as they say "If it's too good to be true, it probably is!"

That sounds like a much better idea, the 856-1 set had already caught my eye, I'll have a look at what I need 1/2" wise and drop you a message.

Thanks for the advice all!

No worries mate. I've just got a message that 902SPC has been discontinued.
