I just got through finishing this Rock Island 597 that I am going to mount on my welding table I am building. They are a great vise.

Thanks, and might I add extremely nice score on your part!! My 597 weighs a ton I don't even want to imagine moving that beast around.

Edgar, I am not sure of the how to safely define the maximum but I can open the 597 to about 12" with end the screw just inside of the threaded post. Not sure if that helps.

Here's a little 3" Wilton 830 I just finished up. It's super clean and works great. I paid $100 for it and it was pretty nice to begin with, just dirty. Manufacture date is 8/53 and it weighs in at 20 pounds.

Nice score Fryme! Love to hear those kind of prices. Especially since I just bought my most expensive vise to date. All my vise buying experience went out the door when I saw this one. Normally I would pick up a vise and examine it carefully from all angles. This thing had to be moved by forklift and I certainly wasn't going to get a peek at the underside or even be able to remove the dynamic jaw on site. In the end, I just said a little prayer and handed the seller my money:lol:

Parker #978. 8" jaws, 299lbs (more if you count the grime). Testing out my car's suspension
IMG_5612.jpg

Finally got it onto the bench this afternoon.

Normally, I would start by washing it outside but the weight of this monster required new thinking... Time to get dirty.

First problem: broken screw on left
IMG_5645.jpg

Luckily, these screws are also hex bolts although there isn't really enough room for a socket. Eventually, I was able to grind down a cheap 14mm socket and lightly tap it on to the damaged bolt.
IMG_5652.jpg

Out comes the screw. Threads looks good.
IMG_5653.jpg

Getting the slide out was much harder than usual. It must weigh 100lbs and I had to get creative and clamp the static jaw to the bench and try not to crush my fingers during the process.
IMG_5650.jpg

Next challenge: Someone didn't have the right socket so they thought it would be a good idea to do this to the swivel bolt.
IMG_5654.jpg

IMG_5655.jpg

I tried to use their shoulder cuts to get the bolt out but it didn't want to budge with that poor method. I ended up using a punch to fold their "ears" back down and then I was able to get a big socket on.
IMG_5656.jpg

Last thing to do is drift out the pin that hold the swivel "brakes" in place. Now I can hopefully lift the larger pieces myself and get started on some major degreasing.....

I needs to be asked what you paid for that beauty. I think I need to find one.

Well now that the cat's out of the bag, I will admit to paying 66 cents per pound for that one. Just please don't tell Bigcaddy.

Balane, That is my favorite bullet restoration by far. Would you mind sharing your color choice or do I need to go and read the recent thread about stealing other member's ideas?

Well this will be a disappointment compared to Rusty's score, but I added a couple of light "Homeowner" vises to the herd.

The "big" one weighs less than 1/64 of Rusty's! :lol_hitti 16 lbs! (And that's actually not bad for a homeowner's exposed screw vise...) and had less than 1/2 the jaw width.

The smaller one is 3" and maybe 14 lbs.

I'm pretty sure Erie Made this Eclipse vise also; too many details the same...

There's a 954 1/2 currently listed in ebay that looks like the one that you're asking about. I would guess that the jaws are 3" or 3.5" (I don't have a pack of Trident for measurement).

Here's another "Can anyone ID this vise" post.

Called about this one this morning and got absolutely no information. Guy said that there weren't any markings that he knew of yet in the picture it looks like there are. I tried expanding the pics but the markings just distorted.

So if anyone can ID the brand of this vise I'd really appreciate it.

That is a columbian, probably from 50-70's era as the name is vertical. Early ones had curved lettering. Good vise.

I have two vises I need to clean up and paint. One is a chas parker and the other is a samson. The chas parker was left here on the old work bench in the blacksmith shop. I took that bench out putting this vise on a mobil bench , made with stuff i had(cabnet,plywood,2x8s,counter top). The model #is hard to see ,looks like it was worn off somehow . Looks like no. 1X ,it opens aleast 61/2" I had it that far cleaning it.
The samson model is 5208 , it looks like it has been used alot. It looks like it was red. Looks like only one layer of paint ,orginal color ?
Not sure what color to paint them , any suggestions ? Anyone know the orginal colors ?
Will post better pic.
Thanks

That green may be the original color. I think it was popular in the late 1800s to ww1 era.
Before that black was very common.

When I choose a color for a vise, I like to make it the original color if I can. More often, I use colors that compliment the polished metal details (jaws, handle and slide). Also, I do the lettering in a different color that compliments the paint. Most of the time that's done with a black magic marker, but hobby shops often have paint pens that work well. Finishing all of that off are some coats of clear coat. Usually high gloss unless I want to give it an original look (last spring I restored an old table saw and used flat black with a satin clear coat). That's my $0.02.

I'm fond of black hammertone:

Also green:

Although Morgans & British vises end up blue & Columbians get burgundy.

Most turn of the century vises were satin black, so that is almost always a safe bet. In general, most companies didn't get into colors on the industrial/Machinist/blacksmith vises until after WWII. Homeowner exposed screw vises were all over the map with Stanley doing 2 color schemas in some cases even in the thirties. (Love my little orange and black clamp on Stanley...)

The model of that Parker is a 1X. I had a later model, maybe 1930's or so and it was a 39X that opened the same distance. Parker was notorious for reusing numbers or changing them on a whim. They can get really confusing if you do some searching.

I think some Columbians were green.

There was a Samson 5216 for sale locally. It was pretty beat up & too expensive so I didn't pay much attention. The paint that was left was red, however.
