Got my sample of the Ulti-MATE Starfire white drawer face with pull, wow, more metallic than I thought it was going to have. It is super nice, and has a lacquer finish so it's really slick looking, more contemporary than the raised panel cabinets I have, but I have no problem mixing two styles. Should blend in with the Vipers well, although the metallic on the Viper boxes is very subtle.

Was thinking of adding some base cabinets with a dark grey/black solid surface or granite top under the single 54" wall cabinets for more storage for my wife, our kitchen is so small.

So I updated my renderings to give myself a better idea of the final layout and which sized cabinets I need to purchase for the other side of the garage. I will replace the round knobs with those long bar pulls like on the Ulti-MATE sample I got but in black.

The only thing I was struggling with was where to buy the white cabinets from, Home Cheapo or Blowes.

The HCHeapo white cabinets seem to have the same exact raised panel look as the existing cabinets, but inside they're that light faux wood color, the existing cabinets are white throughout so the insides won't match. They have thicker backing which should work fine with those cabinet screws I got. The good thing is they the fronts can be screwed together, unlike the existing which cannot without adding some extra wood on the inside.

The white cabinets from Blowes are all white throughout, but the raised panel on them has a inner radius on the corner of the raised panel, which is slightly different from the existing raised panels which have sharp corners, so visually they won't match on the outside. The backing is flimsy and they're like the existing with an extra 1x4 piece of wood top and bottom of the inside to screw into.

Lowes cabinets with radius on inside raised panel I'm not crazy about, they wouldn;'t be a good match

If it were me I'd get the HD ones.

logic is as follows.

1. they match externally. they will be closed 99% of the time.
2. they sound like they are stronger.
3. the inside can be painted.

Yeah, agreed, thanks. Only person who will see the inside would be me, and any nosy friends or family that like to look inside my cabinets. :wtf:

Of course having OCD I will cringe everytime I reach for a tool on that side of the garage.

Minor update to base cabinets. Makes more sense to go with two cabinets, a 30" and 24", the smaller width cabinet wouldn't be practical. I'll save more $ too since it's two versus three.

I was somewhat curious with this build at first, you now have my full attention with those Starfire drawers. The wife wants the kitchen cabinets redone, I wonder if I can talk her into Starfire???? That white hardware for the garage door looks super clean too, never seen that before.

Umm, I must say this place is going to be really nice when it's done.
Thanks, I can't wait, it's been almost 14 years living with the old grimey garage.
I want it done right away and have to remind myself all in due time. Last night was a wash as will be tonight, yesrterday was my wife's and I third wedding anniversary and today is her birthday so, the plan will be to buy the HD cabinets either Friday evening, or Sat early morning and install them Sat morning. :willy_nil

Thanks Jay. Yeah the Starfire Ulti-MATE cabinets sure are neat. They would look nice in a kitchen, they're just very contemporary in design, most of my home is very traditional, more like the raised panel cabinets. But mixing them will look fine I think since they will be against the back wall and are ground to ceiling type storage. They're surprisingly quite affordable too.

Yeah, don't seem to be getting too much interest with this build considering the lack of dialogue, perhaps it's due to it being it it's early stages, or maybe most members hate the design I whipped up, lol. Once it comes together maybe it will gain a bit more general interest.

It's going to be sort of different from the really nice garages I've seen on GJ that have RD tiles, cool stripe paint schemes on the walls, etc, but I'm aiming for more of an extension of my home's interior with the large baseboard and crown moulding and neutral earthtone wall color, hell I was even considering adding a chair rail and shadowbox moulding just for looks, but convinced myself to scale it down as I still have said trim-work throughout my house that still needs to be caulked, and painted. :lol2:

I hear ya'. Hard to get any notice with some of the outstanding set-ups here, but it's ok, your doing it for you, it's not a popularity contest.
I like your plans, I've seen some garages like what you describe. The kind of place where you would be as comfortable reading a book as turning a wrench.

I know, but it still won't match the plastic coated interior of the existing cabinets. After thinking about it I don't mind the faux light wood insides, they will sort of go with the light maple color top of the tool bench. The Gladiator site shows the white bench coming with a bamboo top, and the dark grey version maple, but I've seen pics showing otherwise...so I'd def rather have the maple. At some point you have to just let certain details go. :(

can't you just buy the cabinet and the doors separetely? i am pretty sure you could buy the lowe's cabinet that you like and go to home depot for the door. just double check that the location of the hinge recesses is the same and you're good to go.

neat garage BTW and very impressive on the renderings too.

Thanks, much appreciated, they were just quick sketches really.

Never thought of that option, although I don't think you can buy the doors of the pre-made cabinets separate, nor do I think the hinges would be the same type/size or in the same exact place, I'll look into it though.

Stopped at a local granite store to see if they had any remnants I could get on the cheap. Countertop I will need will be for a 54"Lx24"D base. Initially I was going to go with black and they had quite a few nice pieces of black to choose from, but after thinking about it I may go light on the granite countertop so it blends in better with the light maple top of the Gladiator tool bench. The only black will be the toolbox handles and cabinet pulls.

If I go with a light color I prefer a piece that has more of a random, uneven coloring, veining, I'm pretty sure I recall several of that style/color there too. I was afriad the black countertop would stand out too much.

Progress made. So glad I went with the HD cabinets, they went in perfectly. These are designed to be screwed to each other which and installing the wall cabinets much easier and stronger. Remove the doors, clamp two together, drill a pilot hole, then screw together with 2 1/2" #8 screws. Just have one more 18" to add on the far left of the wall of cabinets where my saw is. The two Viper 41" rollers will fit perfectly next to the saw and align with the last 18" cabinet once it''s in place.

Garage floor in this corner is like 3/4" lower on the right side, crazy. Will hide that with trim and kickplate.

HELL YES, like them even more after seeing this printed on the box.

The notch for the saw worked out great. There is no interference from side to side movement of the saw, or when it's put in it's upright position.

Went with a mix of 24", 30" and 36" for a nice variety visual wise and flexibility wise for storage. Stil have to go back and exchang a 15" I bought for an 18" since I need to extra 3" so the VIper boxes line up on the outer left part of the wall cabinets. Still have 54" in the left corner if I ever get the 60-80 compressor I want.

Concrete floor under the base cabinet has a sizable crack that needed to be filled and fixed prior to me installing them. Filled it early sat morning, was tacky within several hours.

This Quartz is nice, simple, clean, more durable than granite as well *** a non porous feature. The dark grey would come close to matching the sides of the tall Ulti-MATE cabinets I planned on using against the back wall.

My wifes fav (very dark grey with black)

Another jet black granite, the reflection in this one is crazy

Interesting, but way too busy.

Still haven't given up looking for a nice light colored granite with some personality, going to call a few other places tomorrow.

Cabinets complete, last 18" cabinet added on the left to complete the wall of cabinets. I can start painting, and make a final decision on which type of lighting to go with.

Got locked out of my house when I got home at 6:30pm and wasn't able to install the last cabinet until late which was also locked in my car, so don't mind the late night fuzzy pics. Had to wait in the garage until the wife got in from work at 8:30pm :Twitch:

An overall shot of the garage space that I haven't shared yet, don't mind the mess

Would it look funny if I added a 84"Hx18"Wx24"D pantry which is available in these same cabinets on the right of those base cabinets tucked in the corner? It would be higher than the cabinets since I installed the wall cabinets a bit lower for above storage under the garage door tracks. I was considering the pantry for storage of taller items like brooms, levels..etc

After some thought, going with that Quartz slab.

1. Practically bulletproof, most durable more than granite/marble

2. Non absorbent, non staining

3. I'm able to get it for the same price as the granite, even though it's a much higher priced item

4. $350 cash for a 56"x25.5" piece, cut, polished ready to install(2 other local places wanted $600 and up for remnant pieces of Granite at that size, Quartz was much higher)

5. Clean, smart looks, with an industrial look and feel which will go well with the garage

6. Starfire white Ulti-MATE cabinets that I'll be adding on the rear garage wall are a similar grey with just the Starfire white fronts

7. Should blend nice with the white and light maple top of the Gladiator white tool bench

General idea of how the Quartz with light colored wood and white cabinets will look

I even like the white subway tile backsplash..hmmm

Ran the plug from the motion sensor garage light into a newly installed receptacle in the attic, didn't want any wires/outlets visible from inside the garage

Tomorrow I will be tackling storage above all three sets of cabinets for all the spare wood/trim I have. I want to hide it all and will create an open box above the cabinets and put the scraps in there out of the way, out of sight, with crown molding on the front for a cutstom cabinet look.

I built the simple boxes for wood scrap storage. I was able to use up some scrap wood for the one long length of HD cabinets which needed to the tops be leveled for strength, the other cabinets are flat on top.

I tried adding he crown molding over the top of the 1x4s but failed miserably. Not sure what my problem was today, but nothing went right with the crown molding. I've done crown before in my house and these are easy outside corners.

I may just give in and have a contractor do it for me, fast and right, instead of wasting more pieces and getting aggravated.

So I have three different storage areas for scraps, for short, medium and long pieces. Helps to spread out the weight of the scrap too so it's not all above one cabinet.

Looking great man. Awesome amount of light, making me think i need more!

Thank you sir, I think it's just about the right amount of light for me, not overkill, not too little. You can never have enough light brother.
