Re: Planning a new 30 x 32 car shop...what am I missing?

Not to get off the subject, but is that an American Eskimo? I have an 8 year old, he loves hanging out in or near the garage, in the shade and breeze, while I tinker away on cars and motorcycles!! He is my workshop companion, and never complains that I am working in the garage too late and to come to bed like the wife!!!

It's IS an American Eskimo. He's 12 years old and really doesn't show it. He was our "first", so when the kids came along he's taken a long time to get used to them (and moving down the ladder...). He definitley loyal - he'll wait for me to come, even if the wife and kids are going with on a walk. He won't let anyone but us pet him, whcih can be a pain sometimes. But yes, he waits outside the shop for me - even late into the night.

Is that a Vega?

Mark Shaw - Not sure how my shop pics got put into your post - Sorry Mark!

But no, it's not a Vega...it's a '71 240Z. I've had many. It's next in line after the Challenger...and some needs to attend to on the Galaxie....and a few things I want ot do on the 46 Merc truck....

A few updates....

- the shop is now fully wired except the light under the stairs does not work???
- the plumber was out yesterday and finished hooking up the in-floor heat boiler and the water supply from the house
- the electrician is coming back today to wire the boiler and fix the non-functioning light
- the plumber is supposed to return this afternoon to fill-up and fire-up the boiler so the slab can heat up over the weekend
- the epoxy floor guy is scheduled for early next week once the floor is warm
- the OHD guy is suppposed to come back as the 3800 has decided not to work :(

I'll try to get some updated pictures posted this weekend.

As you can see below, the electrician is pretty much done except for the one outside light (backordered).

The plumber has the in-floor heat going and the floor guy has done the epoxy coating (Arizona Polymer). He will come back to install the sink and grey-water storage tank once the floor is fully cured.

The outside concrete pad still has to be sealed and the driveway dug (just gravel this year as too cold to pour pavement).

I still have to get the alarm guy back to wire in the sensors to the panel in the house.

I also have to get the OHD guy back to fix the 3800 door sensors as they are giving a mis-wire fault.

I am going to give the floor a week to cure/harden (takes 35 days total to fully cure) and then rehang the door for under the stairs, and start on the baseboards and corner trim. Then the wheel/tire racks go up as do the emergency exit signs and lights. I also plan to paint the bit of pressure-treated wood from the foundation what is visible (as the epoxy can't be applied to pressure treated wood).
Come November 26, I can fully move in.

Oh yeah, and the painter has to come back to do some touch-ups and repair the ceiling where the electricians put the lights in the wrong place.

The sump pump line is for the condensation from the NG boiler for the in-floor heat (until the grey-water tank is installed under the stairs).

The floor is by Arizona Polymer and is called "Maxine's Blend" (I have no idea why).

Hi! Nice shop, I like all the space and outlets you have. I was just wondering in the above pic if that's the framing above your garage door? It looks like your door header is just two 2x6's or something? Or is this picture rotated? Where's the header beam?

I'm guessing he has a big glue-lam or something under the insulation at the top of that opening, especially looking at the large number of jack studs beside the "filler" area. Otherwise that is a lot of jack studs supporting that insulation!

Also, holy electrical outlet overkill Batman! That is borderline insane!

If you check the pictures earlier in the thread, posts # 22 & 23, you can see that the header is buried up higher in the ceiling and the door is framed down. It looks like it was done that way so the trusses sat directly on the header.

Correct - there is a honkin' big header outside just under the trusses. The area directly above the door is just framed filler below the header.

People say that I have too many outlets! I have a duplex every four foot around the perimeter of both the upstairs and downstairs shop. But quads bottom, middle, and top that often? What the heck do you plan to plug into the quads up top that you need so many of them?

All the outlets along the backwall are wired duplex (each outlet pair on it's own circiut - like a kitchen) for above the bench. The outlets high up on the back wall are for stereo equipment, satellite receiver, etc that sits on a shelf above the bench. Some of the outlets on the back wall are also network and cable/telephone for the satellite. Another pair also carries TV signal from the receiver to the large-screen TV situated in the right-most corner. There is also a quad box for wiring the speakers in the ceiling and two 220v outlets (welder/plasma cutter).

Outlets above the doors are for battery backed up emergency Exit signs.

The outlets high above the windows are for battery backed up emergency lights while the other ones high up are switched for lighted signs, etc.

All the outlets under the left-most window are cable/network/telephone as that is where the desk will be positioned (next to the beer fridge!). There are also a couple of outlets for the security system.

I have a plan and everything has it's place in it. ;)

A little update.

I got the pressure treated lumber edge over the ICF foundation painted and the diamond plate (tread plate) baseboard almost done. I know it is not to everyone's taste but I like it. I have edge protector to install still too.

I also got the ceiling speakers wired and the door to under the stairs re-installed as well as all the locks keyed the same.

I am just waiting on the painter to comeback for some touchup's (hence the coverplates on some switches being off) and then I can start mounting things on the walls.

Epoxy floor is fully cured Nov 26 so that is planned to be the start of the big move in.

Marc, are the bends on the door track manufactured? If so, by who? I am trying to do a similar thing with a 7 ft door to a 9 1/2 ft ceiling and am about to fabricate my own bends using old track sections.

The bends were stock manufactured but I don't know by who. I'll look to see if there is anything printed on them.

The door was installed by the local Overhead Door Company so if there is one close by, you could ask them.

That's a nice garage, but where will you plug stuff in? :bounce:

Where's pics of loft?

Here are a couple of the loft early on in the build. I'll try to post some more recent later this week.

I never watched it being done, but in checking out some that were already installed it looks to me like the kink in the tracks is done on site with a chop saw and some extra stright track.
They just angle the ends a bit.

Thanks Marc and KBS, I did some searching and found a few mfg's who make hi-lift tracks that look like this but not sure if they are exactly what I need for my project.

A few updated pictures.

I got the Gladiator GearWall installed as well as some of the cabinets up.

I was wrong earlier when I said the Gladiator stuff arrived undamaged. Even though the boxes were okay, 3 of the 4 wall cabinets were dented so went back to Sears. The Sears web site has reviews that warn customers that the shipping is done by large gorillas so damage with shipping is common and watch for it!

Now that is a cool workbench! Keep the pictures coming.

Question - on the back wall above your bench, you have two diamond plate backings with round black knockouts. Are those 220v plugs?

All I can say is :wtf: More outlets than my house, garage, and probably two neighbors houses put together :shocking: And I ran my outlets every 6' in both the house garage and my garage.
