I'm going to look at saws this week....my Kubota dealer sells Stihl, so just maybe I may pick up a farm boss for 5/8ths to saw with this spring...you think I'm kidding...she loves to saw! You gotta love a woman who loves to saw!

Have 3 nice 3/4-in birch ply drawers that came out of my father's workbench. I've been sitting on them since they moved out of their house in '95, finally getting around to hanging them under my bench. 1 in so far, works like a charm, thanks to HD slides I bought from a fellow GJ member. Hammers, chisels, punches & files, currently sitting on top of my bench & elsewhere, are slated to go inside.

Finished this one up so I can start the next one.

This was the last one I did, came to me as a rusty all plain white work truck.

I replaced the rear brakes on my Mom's car. It was an early mothers day gift although it looks like I will be putting rear tires on her car next weekend.

I also cleaned/polished the headlight housing on 3 cars since they were blocking more light than was making it through.

I recently installed a new air filter and backplate on my Harley but the kit did not come with something to cover the exposed hardware, so it looked like this.

So for a quick fix at the time, I just put a CD there which cracked and busted within 1hr.

So today I gathered the necessary tools to cut out the center of the stock "football" cover.

Then I cleaned up the edges and remounted it on the bike.

Yesterday I replaced the spark plugs and sync'd the throttle bodies in the Hayabusa I am trying to sell. Also increased the idle to factory recommended 1150 as the 900 it had wiggled down to after 10 years was a bit rough and prone to stalling after a while.

Stihl sells a premixed oil and 93 octane fuel without ethanol for two strokes needing a 50:1 mix. It comes in a quart sized container with a stabilizer and is supposed to last 2 years. Its a little pricey at about $7.99 per quart but I think it's worth it for me. I cannot find zero-ethanol fuel in my area.

Just sayin...

We have been using the pre-mixed now for just over two years. Worth every penny as far as I am concerned as well. No issues with gas going stale or carbs gumming up. Works great!

Not bad, though odd it didn't come with a cover. Must have been a $100 option.

I actually like the CD though, very cool looking!

I installed an x-pipe and some 40-series Flowmasters on the truck. Used a bunch of mandrel bends and am much happier than I was with the previous kit...took a little longer though.

Did not do the following in a day but was done over a few days. Built and wired an instrument panel and running boards on his 34 Buck, powered with a 454 Buick. The car is massive would run right over these little cars running the roads today

A few more general shots of the car, this car is massive notice the frame. How about that back seat many shotgun weddings produced there at the drive-in or down by the lake.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

OK, it's official, I am no longer a 'work on my own car' guy.
I tried the shocks to get me back in the swing of diddling with cars. It appears I genuinely hate it. All I could do to keep myself sane was to chant 'designers are not end users...designers are not end users.'. Only 120years of the technology, and I lay under a truck and solved what must be an age old problem...at the slightest glance.

I hate it, I hate what they have become [yes, I had an early mustang big block, and I cut holes in the fender wells to get the plugs out. Yup, had the bigblock olds...never figured those plugs out, yes, I had the hemi 'cuda with the three piece motor mounts that I never did figure how to get out...IT'S a RANT!], I hate that some shops will tell you they have to pull a ball joint loose to get a shock out instead of just ******** collapsing the shock and pulling it out.
I am now officially an end user. I will attempt a restoration on the jd 140 and the Gilson [that I bought to see if I could stand a restore on a 63 Jag] and then I'm out. If it isn't my 'vette or some other car I can blow an access in to a wheel well, or throw a 9/16th wrench from across the room and hit the bolt that needs turned, I'm just not going to do it. It would have been $85 in labor for the shocks, I'm filthy, I need new Levis, My bad elbow that I generally ignore is being pissy, and I have no sense of accomplishment.

I guess that's why I'm mad. $85 lousy dollars is all I saved, and I couldn't care less that I had the ability to change the shocks or not. I have never seen working on cars as a 'contest' or a stripe on a sleeve.

OMG what a quote! We have all been there at one point. But in this group you can not have your cake and eat it too. If you don't fix your car you have no reason or claim to have tools. If you have tools and don't use them you have no reason or claim to have a cool garage. If you have a cool garage and don't fix cars you are just a yuppy with lots of money and a car collector. If you are just a yuppy and a car collector that pays someone else to keep things in shape I probably wouldn't even sit on the same side of the bar as you. I think maybe you need to go have a cold one and take a break tomorrow you will be yourself again.

oh and I'd take 3 aspirins for that elbow.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Hung some Rapid Air tubing and replaced the awkward, hard to reach drain on my compressor to a ball valve. Hoping I can attach some small tubing and port it outside. Rapid Air is going up pretty quick, I just hope it's air tight once I get it all finished. I hate air leaks and unnecessary compressor cycling they cause.

Also put the finishing touches on the steel out feed table I made for my table saw. It was my first real welding project and it came out exactly like I wanted it to. Just wish I could find a place to get it powder coated for a reasonable cost. I got a quote for $150, which seemed a bit high to me. I think I'll just spray it for now.

I haven't managed anything today, I'm laid up with a spasming back, excruciating pain and you never know when it is going to strike, can't see a doctor for at least 10 days and even then the doctor will be a non English speaking tree dweller, I'll have to satisfy myself with catching up on the GJ happenings.

I chopped up what felt like half a mile of old floor joists that a neighbour gave us out of an old dutch barn he's ripping down, it's full of nails and a bit rotten in places but it'll go in the wood burner next winter, you can't knock free heat! I have kept some of the best lengths to make a workbench out of for my forge.

Why 10 days? Sounds like you should go right to the emergency room!

I tore apart, cleaned and reassembled the carb on my 13 year old Echo line trimer. I can't complain, it's ever needed more than a spark plug and filters after 13 seasons.

I also mixed up a can of gas with Stabil for my snow blower and ran it for a bit.

So, nothing exciting...

AWESOME skillz!!!!

Finished this one up so I can start the next one.

I did a coupe paint jobs in my shop a few years back but now I get them close and then have them painted at a shop, but due to the wait-times I'm reconsidering that. Can I ask: Do you use any plastic drop sheets/fans/water on the floor? Do you have any neighbors that could smell the fumes?

FANTASTIC REPLY to his rant! While sometimes we can all feel his pain - and even pay to have stuff done we don't enjoy doing - ya gotta decide where you stand!

Massive doctor shortages where I am and even the ones we have are non English speakers, the ER is full of stinking natives, the smell of them makes you want to heave and if you aren't near death it is 6+ hours wait. Ive been crunching anti inflammatories, laying on a heat pack and doing a few stretches when I can and I don't feel too bad today. After about 10 beers yesterday I actually got a bit done to my bike so maybe beer is the answer.

I've not only been in your place (injury-wise), but I also spent a lot of time in athletics and in Kinesiology in College. Although Rest, Ice and Heat was big back then, the new thinking is to regain your ROM (Range of Motion) now. As you said, light stretching is key. If you Google "back injury exercises" you'll get the basics. Start with 3-4 movements and work up to 5-6 different ones. Don't strain, but get the motion and blood back. If you're prone to a sore back, do it often (daily is the goal....). Feel Better!

Cheers e-tek, Ive sort of come to the conclusion I may have done it in my sleep, I had gotten into a habit of sleeping with my arm under my head and it seems to have started with the back pain about then. The pain isn't constant just occasional spasms that pull my upper body back and last from 1-10 seconds.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Lifted my 2008 HD 105th Anniversary Road Glide, removed mufflers, rear wheels. Got new rubber on the wheels. Before wheels back on there will be new brake pads, oil change, and Performance front suspension Monotubes installed.

As you can see in the attachment, and if you go to the link to my garage build, I am at the stage of stripping the old paint off the garage floor in preparation of wife and I laying VCT.

I am curious as well. I have always done my own paint and body work because I don't trust anyone else to perform the work in the manner in which I want it done. I used to have the best of both worlds. I say used to because you really don't realize how good you have it until you don't have it any more. I had my home shop where I did the mechanical work as well as fabrication work. Once it was ready for body and paint I would throw it on the trailer and haul it over to my parents house where I had converted my old shop from earlier years into mainly just an oversized paint booth. It worked great and I could perform all the work myself and keep my home shop nice and clean and odor free as well as not piss off the neighbors with paint fumes.

After my parents passed away and we leveled the family farm I no longer had the option of having a seperate "paint shop" and I refuse to paint in my home shop. I have done a few small items outside in the back yard but they were just minor touch-up jobs such as repairing and painting the fender on my old Jeep that was dinged upon my purchasing. My son just bought some half doors for his Jeep that we need to paint and I think I am just going to paint them outside in the back yard on a calm day. I have also painted a couple of motorcycle chassis in the back yard but nothing that produces much overspray or fumes.

I am always curious of what others use to protect the interior of their shops from paint overspray and body work but I will never subject my home shop to that again.

Mike.
