Did you smack the previous owner for taking aluminum to that wheel?

My thoughts exactly. I just saw in my Grizzly catalog near the ******* they have a wheel cleaner (not a dresser). Also have a belt sander cleaner...trying to find the link now....

EDIT: belt sander cleaners...http://www.grizzly.com/products/Pro-Stik-Abrasive-Belt-Disc-Cleaner-1-3-8-x-8-1-2-/W1305

just found this...wine cork cleans abrasives...http://www.rockler.com/how-to/wine-corks-clean-sanders-abrasives/

maybe I'm smokin' crack and the only way to clean a grinding wheel is with a dresser????

Here's my small scores. Good thing it was an $8 haul. Gotta wait to see if the Victor cutting torch works. I was told it does, but you know how that goes sometimes:mad:.

I have been expanding my Cornwell tool collection within the last year. You don't see them too often around here, and I've inherited a good bit from my dad. Most guys who sell tools at the flea markets I go to frequently lump them in the same category with Craftsman in terms of pricing. I guess they aren't familiar with them or know others around here aren't an price accordingly. Whatever the case I'm not complaining.:pimpflash

I passed on a decent Reed 104 for $45. The guy told me to make an offer. I said $20 and he said no. I walked, and not because it was overpriced at the $45 he was asking. I just don't need another one in that size and weight class. Not to mention I would have had a pretty far walk to my truck with that anchor in my hands. :lol_hitti

9forGmc-- I may have your handy button press. I've got a box of Handy button dies that I got from an upholstry shop. I meant to sell them a year ago, but BUYING stuff gets in the way of selling :)

PM me a link to the one you want?

ok, driving to get that pallet jack for $30 from CL ...http://www.globalindustrial.com/p/m...mpaignId=T9F&gclid=CNGNna69kbcCFSU6Qgod93YApQ, and pass by a yard sale. See a Milwaukee red case, so I hit the binders and pull in. End up getting a painted/engraved-but damn good condition Milwaukee bandsaw 6230 6.0A in metal case, extra blade, and an Eagle 5gal gas can for $30.

Now I can put one band saw on a dedicated stand---like this---http://portabandstand.com/

There's also a pic of my Milwaukee Band Saw 6236 5/6A with plastic case I got from CL for $80.

Just a little bit this weekend for me, I'm getting picky. (Snap-on whitworth, Gray, P&C, Proto LA, and some nice condition Plomb) I haven't bought a vise in awhile but couldn't leave this really nice Prentiss behind at $8.50;)

Kind of a strike out weekend.
Small community wide garage sale on Saturday netted a single purchase , a Littleston vise for 3 bucks.

Saturdays weekly auction had quite a bit of tools but I had to keep myself in check.
Kinda hosed myself by not looking closer at the Indestro 1/4" rat.
Has just enough rust inside to keep the damn thing from working.
Have the guts soaking in vinegar. The only upside was the two unexpected Snap-on pieces on the left. Powerkraft 3/8 breaker is in good shape. Spent 10 bucks at the auction.

Helped out friend today and offered the generator in trade for labor.
Said. Hell yes to that. Didn't know Milwauke ever offered generators.

Went to the Canton Texas auto swap meet on Saturday. Took a few things along to sell to a fellow Mustang club member he was interested in but did not get a spot. Saw some cool cars and resisted buying another one LOL. Found a few tool deals, not much this time.

First buy at very first spot I came to, toolbox for $5. I saw enough with a quick look to grab it and head back to the car. First pic is the Workmans Choice USA made toolbox along with all the import or unreadable tools that will go into the yard sale box. Second is the USA made stuff, First row USA made unbranded socket and punch, Armstrong socket, 4 Craftsman and one Cornwell socket, Fuller wood chisel, Greenfield tap holder, . Second row Mayhew screwdriver, Proto socket, 1/4" driver with the female drive hole on top, two wrenches and a Thorsen funky ratcheting screwdriver. Third row is a Vaco scredriver, Vlcheck nut drivers, Williams socket and Xcelite nutdriver.

Third pic is a Craftsman premium 1/2" ratchet with extension $20

I then hit up the new tool seller looking for USA made stuff. Picked up S-K wrench racks for $5 each, small USA made vise grips $10 each, Lisle razor scraper $8, unknown stubby bit holder $2 and Wilde long cotter pin pullers $8.

On the way out I spied this Sears truck and trailer, looks perfect for the Craftsman Crown garage. $40 and it was mine. It's mostly metal so it must be older LOL

This is the most deflating thread i've ever come across on any forum. All of these great tools for great prices, and the best I can find are coasters and vinyl records....

No tools left in the garage, but I found this in the bathroom.

After getting it home I noticed some hacking on the underside. The guy was into electronics, and after turning on the radio, I'm guessing he goosed it somehow as the sound seems amped up.

I was like you for years. My buddies would find all kinds of sweet stuff and all I ever seemed to find were baby cloths and toys. Then I discovered that there was more to it than just happening across a garage sale. I discovered that it is not only the time that you go, but also where you go. For years I mostly just hit up my town. It used to be more blue collar, but in the late 80's the transformation started with the yuppie up and comers and their McMansions. The trick for me is between 8-9am on Thurs and Fri. in a still blue collar town. Bingo! Score after score. Only thing that ***** is if you have a job miss all the good stuff, but I suppose having a job is a good thing too. I worked in construction and down time happens and some times it happens at just the right time. I know that this is not set in stone and people have found cool stuff later in the day and in newer neighborhoods, but I never have.

Don't totally dismiss higher end neighborhoods.
Retirement age folks can end up there and they get to the age where they just don't use the stuff anymore.
For me the garage sale scores seem to come from ones I come across by chance.
If I go out on planned sales odds are its an exercise in frustration.
Unfortunate for my bank account I discovered Auctionzip.
You can find weekly consignment auctions in your area that are always held in the same location. Most all of them post photos of the upcoming items and that can give you more of a reliable opportunity.

Auctionzip? Never heard of it. I'm going to check it out. As if my pockets weren't empty enough. :) Thanks for the heads up.

You are not the only one.:bounce:

But remember this thread is like watching the evening soccer highlight reel. A lot of spectacular goals but there is a lot of tedious back and forth in the interim.

Go out as much as you can and your success ratio will improve.

MOST important ingredient, in MY opinion, is that you've gotta enjoy the hunt itself. In other words, I've found loads of great used tool buys at yard sales, estate sales, etc. And people have often been amazed, and asked my secret (back when I had time to post photos. LOL.) But the secret is that I like going to the sales, whether I find anything or not. So, if I hit ten yard sales and find only "coasters and vinyl records," I know that the odds are stacking up in my favor that the next sale, or the next one after that is likely to be a good one. If I head out on a day of hitting sales and find 10 bad sales and 2 good ones, it was a good day. And if instead I hit a LOT of good sales, then it was a great day. But I am happy either way.

On the other hand, if you go out with the attitude of a "meter running," trying to decide if it was productive or not, then you might not feel successful. I have learned to be almost as happy when I have shopped all day and kept most of my money in my pocket...buying only the few fabulous finds, instead of trying too hard to fill my truck with stuff, as I am when I spend some serious cash on awesome buys. :rocker:

Oh I love going out, spending the morning going garage sale hunting, and I do have fun even if I don't score big. I go on craigslist and plot out a map of the garage sales in the cities surrounding me. If I find something, then great, if not, it was cool seeing the stuff for sale. Just haven't come across the kinds of stuff you guys have is all. Thanks for the words though, keeps me determined haha.

I was going in late to work anyway today, so I figured I'd hit a few garage sales on the way. First stop was down the street from my house. The ad mentioned "tool boxes" and had a photo showing some kind of parts cabinet and a corner of yet another beat-up Craftsman Crown hand box. The 'parts cabinet' ended up being a small toolbox:

It's a Giller and was once a hand box, but has since lost the front panel that would have latched at the top. The drawers slide remarkably smoothly. This one will go on the bench and get used for sure. I actually looked in the Craftsman box, then turned to leave it, then took a second look... and I'm glad I did. Inside were some jumper cable ends, a gallon ziploc bag of allen wrenches, an imported impact driver, and the three tools show below:

From the top is a complete Bethelhem Spark Plug Company Quickway socket set, a "Larc-o-matic" automatically adjusting wrench, and a Mossberg ratcheting connecting rod wrench.

Second stop didn't look very promising... Until I was directed to the basement, and went around the corner... It was hard choosing what to bring home. The only thing I know is that I'm going back tomorrow morning with more cash:

From the top left: Snap-On Vacuum Grip Ignition Pliers, "Proto by Plomb Tool Company" cutters, Proto slip-joints, a Wizard 3/8" drive metric socket set, and Williams and Snap-On 3/8" drive speeders. Below are a set of SK flex combination wrenches, a Blackhawk extension, a 'Long C' Craftsman 1/4" drive sliding t-handle (that has seen better days...), and a MAC Sabina X3R 3/8 ratchet.

HOLY SNAP!! Love those SK flex wrenches!!

I have what was suspected to be a Giller that I got from a member here and restored in this thread. I lined the drawers with leather, still need to replicate a door one day.

That's really cool! I was actually wondering today if I would ever see another one like it...

I also had the idea to use it by the drill press. It seems to be a pretty ideal size for it.

G-Sales are like dating. You have to go to lots of them to find a good one but you can still enjoy doing it.

You should also not go to G-Sales looking for a specific item because you won't find it. Instead you'll find many other things and you might even stumble on specific items when you least expect them.

Also don't ignore the stuff you don't want that has high profit potential. It's like finding a few "Benjamins" laying on the sidewalk. Bend over and pick them up.

Came across a pretty nice snap on kra top box that I couldn't pass up for $30. Even has the original key with it still. Not sure if I am going to strip and repaint it back to the original red or leave it alone since I like the old stickers on it. Anyone know exactly where I would need to look for the date and model number stamping on the back? The old silver paint that is on it is thick and no stamping can be seen without stripping it off.

Very nice, great deal. It is a 60's KRAXXX, what are the dimensions and drawer count? If you took a pick with the front open I could tell you exactly which model it is.

As for the stamping. Should be on the back, bottom right hand corner as you are facing the back.

Emeraldcoup, you **** on that proto box!!! Is it hard to open with no front handle though?

The only thing, mine has different pulls and no stamping by the top handle like yours does but they are really close.

I look for something to cover gas at every stop, don't always find something but I try to scan each table for good non-tool pick before leaving.

Mine is stamped on the left side panel, near the bottom back corner.

That Proto box is awesome!

I stalk this thread all the time looking at the great finds. I need to post some pics of the items I picked up at yard sales, flea markets and pawn shops due to me being inspired by the items you guys post here. I've found that a DIY guy like me can add some great tools and variety to my tool arsenal for very little money this way. I've paid two or three bucks for quality tools that I would never buy new due to the slim likelyhood that I would need them on a regular basis. Thanks for all the posts guys!

Went to an estate sale today and he had a SO KR660 with a $250 price tag on it. Unfortunately it was already sold:sad:

I did snag this SO side cabinet that was full of fittings (including about 10 lbs of brass) for $20:

may17Gsale%20004.jpg

The next sale had this like new right angle drill for $35:

may17Gsale%20005.jpg

The final sale had this lot of soldering and pedal operated desoldering irons + solder for $5:
